When someone is murdering you or robbing your house, I'll be protected, you'll only have a phone.

I would ask them why do they insist on living on the Government and expecting everyone else to defend them? That kind of attitude 200 years ago would have us all paying taxes without a voice and bowing down to a Queen.

You are exactly right. What is your address so I can put a sign at my residence telling all would be thiefs that I own guns and you don't?

I'd say something similar, and I've said it before.

Put up a sign in front of your house saying how much you hate guns. I'll guarantee you that you'll be a crime victim in no time flat.

In debate today fueled by the latest Mall shooting I responded to this question with:

    They are family heirlooms.
They are used in sporting competitions.
    They are investments.
They are a tool for providing protection.
    They are collectable.
They are a part of our history.
    They are an historical collectable.
They are a tool for hunting.
    They are fun.
    And because I can.

Among other reasons for owning a firearm I said to them that they are not the evil. The evil is the person shooting up a mall.

They could not understand that an AK47 is not evil. I have never talked to someone with such a thick skull. and There is absolutly nothing more evil about an AR15 with a flash hider on it then one without. They think that an AR is evil.
Even though a 16" barrel shotgun is illegal to own without the proper papers, it is no more evil then a 24" shotgun.
    They couldn't understand.

Their whole argumant was that we do not need to own firearms. All habdguns are evil according to them. And they were dead serious about what they believed.

No reason to sleep with their wife/daughter but i did. maybe if they had a gun they could have done something about it.

I find it easier to ask "Why not?"

1: it puts THEM on the defensive--they have to justify their views.
2: it's fairly easy to logic-bomb them on most points they bring up, viz:
"It'll save kids lives"--point out that more kids die in swimming pools, playing team sports, etc...than are killed by firearms.
"It'll reduce crime"--No, it doesn't--and states with shall-issue concealed carry laws see reductions in crime. And, criminals will find a way to get weapons. Would it make you happier to be stabbed than shot? How about beaten with a baseball bat?

    You get the point.

What does need have to do with owning guns?

Those who prefer security to freedom will end up with neither.

What is your answer to someone saying this?

I'm glad you feel that way. That way, if society collapses, I know you are unarmed, and can kil you and take your food and other valuables. I appreciate that[:)]

That works too. [:)]Eat or be eaten. Kill or be killed. I know which I prefer. Make it a challenge for me and run.

EVERYBODY missed the point on this one. Tell them the reason to own a gun is to able to mount an effective resistance when the government comes to persecute and kill you. They'll laugh and say, "Oh, are King George and his redcoats coming to get you?" Laugh right along with them, "Hey, that's a good one!", and then whip out a book of Holocaust pictures.

"Hey, aren't these a scream! Look at that guy knealing at the edge of a pit, and that SS guard has already just shot his wife and son! That's so funny!" They'll say that nothing like that could ever happen again and was a total aberation, and you can point out how Hitler rose to power mostly through the democratic process, that Germany was a very cultured and well-educated nation, and that up until late 1944 most Germans really liked Hitler and thought he was a great leader.

But don't stop there. Show them some pictures of Kurds killed by Saddam. And then show them some stacks of corpses from Uganda and Idi Amin's killing machine. And them some pictures of the Cambodian killing fields. And each time, point out how this was all done by governments against innocent citizens.

Then you can take them to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in DC, and show them the bent, burned, and twisted rifles, handguns, and shotguns from the Warsaw ghetto uprising. They are cased like holy relics, marking the moment when Jews finally realized that they had to stand up and fight, that they had to get any weapon they could to resist the Nazis, that moral superiority and reasoned arguments and letters to the editor do not amount to a hill of beans against pure evil. And point out that while the SS did eventually crush the uprising, it took a long time and the Jews were able to kill many Nazis. Yes, untrained citizens with daddy's fowling shotgun and the uncle's deer rifle, giving one hell of a mauling to the Nazi war machine.

That, my friend, is the real reason to own a firearms. Deer hunting and target shooting and all the rest are just fluff.

Wow. Way to bring us all down, Captain Buzzkill.

Seriously, that's all too much to remember. I just take off my glasses, fix 'em with my best fish-eyed stare and ask, "Do I look like I want to explain myself to you?"

Usually, they just leave. Especially when the right eye wanders back to them.

    Wait.

    I have a new one.

    You tell 'em,
"No. There's no reason for you to own a gun. Or that car. Gimme your keys."

Well, owning a gun seems to work really, really well for those violent criminals out in our society who want to rape, rob, kidnap, and kill you. And having a gun seems to work really, really well for the police in regards to subduing those criminals or even in defending the police against those criminals.

So why wouldn't it also work really, really well for the common citizens to own guns?

DUH. No. If common citizens didn't have guns, there would be no crime, and police wouldn't need guns.

    You're silly!

Yeah, I forgot. The main reason for all those gun crimes out there is not because of violent, evil criminal type people. Instead all that crime is solely because common citizens own guns. Take away guns from peaceful, lawful people like me and you will instantly put a stop to all the hate, crime and violence in America.

I don't know how I forgot about that. My bad. Sorry.
