The other night we had a thunder storm. Since then my compter is not working right. You can be doing something on it and all the sudden it is gone. I might have to take it to the shop[:(]

any experts around that can solve this problem?
my computer will not boot, it gets to windows and then shuts itself down, or freezes at a black screen. same thing in safemode. If i try to reinstall windows from cd, the computer reboots itself as soon as the cd loads. any ideas?0 -
On the auction side whenever I hit the back button on my browser it says web page expired and I have to hit the refresh button. Do not have this problem on the Forum side or on most other websites. Any ideas if I have a computer problem or is there a problem with the Gunbroker website? 0 -
I run Firefox. I got a request today to download the new version of Firefox. I went ahead and downloaded it.
When I got the computer going again, I noticed that the colors on the symbols at the top are faint. Th green arrows that mean "Go back. Go forward," are pale green, they used to be bright green. The stop sign is pale red.
Well, that doesn't bother me much.
But there is another problem. If I click on a link, it is fine, I can go to the link. But then when I click on the "X" at the right top of the screen, in order to get off of the link, I don't go back to the forum. Instead, it is as though I am shutting down the computer. It goes back to the first page that comes on when you are starting up the computer. Then, I have to click on "Firefox" to get back on the internet.
WTH?
Just happened to me again. I clicked on a link here on the forum, when I clicked the X to get off the link, a warning appeared, "You are about to close two tabs. Are you sure you want to do that?" I clicked, "Yes go ahead and close 2 tabs" and it popped right off the forum and back to the startup page, I had to start Firefox all over again and then come back onto the gunbroker forum.0 -
My computer guy thinks it might be trying to update itself and therefor lagging real bad. Going to have him wipe it clean and install windows 8 or 10. What say you???? Have window 7, but it is really lagging behind trying to constantly update itself. He tried a few things and we will see if it last for a week or so until after the new year.Windows 8 or 10??? Good and bad????Oakie 0 -
OK guys heres the scoop. My monitor turned kinda blurry, and there are dark streaks running horizontally across the screen every where there is text. The colors are not clear and crisp. Dell sent me a new monitor and that did not help. I reinstalled the device drivers and that did not help. What should I check next? Could it be the video card?

Can not write to A: get windows message disk write protected.
Disk is not write protected.
I can access the drive and write to it from the DOS prompt but not from Win.
So the Drive and the Controler are ok.
Worked on this all day and got now where.

My mom has an older Sony tower with a P1 processor. It is adequate for her needs.
Today she called and said that the cursor arrow is bouncing all over the screen and won't stop. Mouse movement has no effect.
She can't shut down through Windows for a regular restart, so I had her kill the power supply. Started up again, and the cursor arrow is still randomly chasing around the screen.
Any ideas? Is it fixable or do we get another computer?

When I was reading the posts, I noticed that a member asked a question about their computer and quite a few people replied.
Hopefully somebody can help me figure out what may be going on
with my computer.
I have a Dell Desktop that I purchased in 2003. It has two disc
players, one is to play a disc and the other one is to burn a
disc. I tried to play a disc and I could hear it start up but it is not reading the disc. I tried it numerous times and used 2 different
discs, but no luck. I just got a new printer and I cannot install
it because the computer is not reading the disc. I have no idea
whatsoever where I go from here. Taking it to a repair shop is not
an option. Broke 4 bones in my foot, been out of work for 6 months.
(Mother told me there would be days like this, but she didn't
tell me there would be so many). I'm thinking that it probably is
not going to be a quick, easy fix such as a bad fuse. Would
appreciate any input.
Thank you gentlemen.0 -
will cold weather affect the operation of a computer?
yesterday I was in my shop an went to start the computer and it sounded like a belt on a mower squealing. I shut it down quick and warmed the building and tried it again. it squealed about 3 seconds and quit. the screen showed I had 60+ malware problems.
I fixed that problem , but nothing else would load.
I took the computer back to January of this year to get around the problem, but nothing will load
it is a 3 year old acer. junk it?0 -

I just bought a new version of Adobe Photoshop CS3. When I put the disc into my computer to install it nothing happens. When I look under "computer" it says I have nothing in the drive. However, anytime I put some type of other disc in there it starts to load immediately. 0 -

I have several thousand songs on SD drives. Some are in WMA (Windows media Audio) format. Others in MP3, wave, etc.
I cannot play the WMA songs and get a display window indicating ie, must use windows 7 or later, Server not updated, etc. I try to convert to MP3......... won't work. DRM response.
I have the latest version of windows, am using windows 7. I've checked my settings and cannot find anything causing this.
Everything work fine til a few months ago, now - problems.
Any suggestions? Just don't to delete about 1500 songs with a good reason.0 -
I think this may not be fixable!

I have an old laptop that I like, but every now and then it gets to running really slow, and the only way I can get it to running fast again is to use the system restore feature. Any ideas as to what might cause this? 0 -
My computer is getting slow, so im trying to delete all the files I dont need. Ive deleted most of them, but there are thousands of folders and websites in my history folder and everytime I click to delete them they just stay there. How do I deleted them???????
Thanks for responding to my "tell me about the special forces post"0 -
Lately my computer is really slow when It is doing some serious processing! When Im in adobe scanning pictures it now takes forever to make alterations, and to convert the pictures to various formats. It used to do this very fast. I have 120 meg of ram, I checked my memory allocation and it was at 80%. Im sure it must be a memory problem but I don't know how any of the setting could have been changed! Anybody have any suggestions?

Have you tried starting in "safe" mode to give yourself a better idea of what's going on ??
That, at least, may allow you to reinstall Windows.
What are the specs on your machine, and what version of Windows are you running ??
Doug0 -
it wont let me start in safe mode either. im running xp pro, its a compaq presario with amd processor 0 -
Sounds like bad main memory or video memory. For main memory, if you have more than 1 chip, remove 1 than the other. For video, you'll need to get another card. 0 -
BTW: Try safe mode command prompt only - if that works, it could be video memory. 0 -
Does restore work? 0 -
change the bois to boot from the cd drive first. f8 i think. Then repair or reinstall windows. Have to have the system resore disk by the way 0 -
download memory error possibly...
download ubuntu linux www.ubuntu.com and when you boot from it, one of the menu choices is to run memtest86 ... pick that, let it run for a few hours, assuming it doesn't pick up an error in the first 30 seconds...0 -
listen to the beeps when it starts, they have a type of morse code for cpu's, let me know how many beeps, long/short
have you done anything to it lately?0 -
thanks for all the tips, but i called a friend and hes coming over to fix it. ill report back as to what the problem was when it is (hopefully) fixed. 0 -
oh good. i was just gonna say that unless you know what exactly you're doing i wouldn't ask for advice on the internet and just ask someone locally to take a look. i'd be happy to help out but it'd be easier for you to just take it to a local computer store since it could be anything from failed hardware to windows eating itself out.
post an update anyways, maybe i'll be able to give a couple of pointers.0 -
Sounds like it overheating.
Vacuum it out real good.0
