It's Time To Move
Been planning a move for a couple years now, I think I better hurry up.
The Saint Louis Police Department released some crime stats for last year and the Post Dispatch printed them today. Keep in mind that the City is a fairly small place with a population of @350,000, and whites currently make up less than 20% of that number.
8,645 vehicle thefts
3,147 robberies
129 murders, and that number doesn't reflect the beatings, stabbings, and shootings that didn't result in fatalities.
I live here and know it's bad, but damn, that shocks even me.

Move to Northern Wisconsin, where it's OK to shoot whenever you want in your back yard, and the neighbors (for the most part) don't care, and might even come over to see what you've got; and sometimes they bring their own weapons and join you. 0 -
did you see the list of the top 10 neighborhoods? I won't say which, but I'm definitely in the top 10. it doesn't surprise me. 0 -

I grew up in the Patch neighborhood of Carondelet, went to Cleveland High School, and live on the South side of the River Des Peres now. It's still OK here as far as violent crime is concerned, but the car thefts and burglaries are increasing as they move closer each year. It's hard to believe that Dutchtown has degenerated this far, guess there's no "Dutchmen" living there now. I don't see any hope for improvement. What family in their right mind would move here in view of the situation in the Public Schools? They list Gravois Park as #9 on the list. I've never heard of it. Is it the Gravois and Christy Park area?0 -
I must be precient, I left there 29 years ago, and had been living in the county for 8 years before that. Sometimes I do miss the Central West End, Gas light, and some of the old places from another lifetime. I still eat at Rich & Charlies when I am in town, best salad and white clam sauce in the world! Still some good places on the Hill too. Can't seem to find but one good gun shop. 0 -

Gaslight Square, that is another lifetime! Today you couldn't walk down Olive between Sarah and Boyle and survive. The Hill is still the Hill though, safe, and the best Italian in the World. There's a good gun shop in the City? Denny Dennis is in Fenton.0 -
Did they ever get the city streets and Interstate fixed in Saint Louis? The last time I was through there they were rougher than even Birmingham's streets and Birmingham hasn't spent a penny on their streets and Interstate since Ike was president.

gravois park is a small park (like 2 blocks wide, 3 blocks long) to the east behind that Auto Zone that's right by that Schnucks on chippewa and gravois. that's the neighborhood; in the park there's some kind of sign about "in memory of big daddy corn puffs" or something ghetto like that... I could run down there and take a picture but I'm too lazy!
christy park is by that big windmill thing at morganford & gravois, go west on delor a few blocks. I'd much rather live in that neighborhood than gravois park. that's where the bosnians are, they're a lot more respectable bunch and they made a good low rent working class neighborhood for themselves. (as you probably are aware of)
you know how tough it is for businesses to get $$ in this part of town, I've seen a few close up shop. blockbuster closed 2 stores that I know of. I seen other restaurant or discount store types move in where others moved out, and I don't think they're doing too well. it's still going downhill.
shootings that you read about in the paper, they're usually 32xx pennsylvania or whatever, that's the neighborhood. check it out, almost all of them are in the 3000 to 4000 blocks.

bullseye indoor shooting range on manchester is about the best one in the city limits, but that's not saying much. nothing at all like a Ray's Sporting Goods (dallas), Cheaper Than Dirt (fort worth) or that ammo place by that big eiffel tower thing in mesquite. I guess around here denny dennis is your best bet. this place ain't got nothing on dallas. good thing we got gunbroker, eh?0 -

Grand and Gravois eh, used to live on Utah by Gravois, had to move after two burlaries in 3 months. In the '70s I lived two blocks from the Bevo Mill. The Bosnians have made a lot of progress since they came here and are moving to the County in droves. Affton, Bayless, and South County. Most of them have children and won't send them to the Saint Louis Public Schools, and there's no Islamic private schools yet, though they are planning this. They say the schools in America are not up to the standards of the European schools. Can't argue with that.

if you ever go to dallas, check out ray's sporting goods on singleton blvd. they got the stuff! as far as handguns, they got a whole display case full of all the pearl-handled, engraved, low caliber down-and-out boozin' and card playin' guns you ever did see (maybe 30) bought used from dudes that probably really did need them (use your imagination). they're the real thing. they got some flavor like I never seen anywhere else. 0 -
oh yeah, my neighborhood isn't as rough as gravois park, and my neighbor got broken into 3 times in 3 years. mine hasn't, cuz I guess my rottie won't let them! good doggy! heh heh. where I work at, they steal cars out of the parking lot in broad daylight. they still do. they found some guy bound and gagged (and dead of course) a few blocks away, bums wander into the building at night looking for food or cigarettes, one time this guy was using a fax machine at night, went into the other room, came back and it was gone! it's crazy. right to bear arms, gotta have it. 0 -

I still do. I have been here for 12 years and have never had any problems with crime. You are right about the public school system. My kids go to a Catholic school. I used to live by gravois park back in the 80's. It is a shame how the city has gone downhill. I work for an hvac co. and we don't run any calls north of delmar and we stay off of the state named streets at night.0 -

Dak To 68 I used to live a few blocks from Gaslight, and got buglerized. Whoever did the B&E they always had a 10 year old on hand to say he did it. That was when I moved to the County, and lived in Clayton, Kirkwood, Creve Cour, Overland, then left. I believe the place I found was in St. Anne, I will see if I can figure it out. I was pretty unimpressed with Denny Dennis, hard to find and only new stuff, no old stuff to speak of. I did get some patches and stuff on sale there.

I've been to there. Long haul for me, they're OK guys, a bit elitist, and very proud of their wares. They can be dealt with, however they give ground grudgingly. I understand that. They do deal in some very nice old stuff. I go to Dennis for supplies, reloading, cleaning stuff, fishing gear, etc. It's convenient, and not too far.0 -
There is a New Bass Pro, Outdoor World over the bridge in St. Charles. That was a pretty nice place when I was there for a funeral about a year ago. They were just getting opened. Might be closer than Denny Dennis, depending upon where you are located. 0 -

University City is a safe haven compared to The Ville, Jeff-Vander-Lou, Wells-Goodfellow, etc. You can't walk the streets in broad daylight in these 'hoods.[:D]0
