About to go on a killing spree, need advice please
OK, we've got a serious problem with Canadian Geese. I have heard they are protected, but I can't seem to find confirmation one way or the other. The problem is that they are poop machines. We live on a small pond, and about 100 of these geese think it's their home (instead of MINE -- the nerve!![:D]).
The come in our yard and literally make it unusable. Not only do they tear up my beautifully manicured lawn, but they crap like it's their job. My kids can't even go out and play back there, and the lawn mower doesn't suck up the hundreds of mounds of pellets. I used to let my dogs out to chase the geese away, but: 1) it's only a temporary solution, and a reactive one at that. It doesn't prevent the geese from coming into the yard, as they're not scared anymore. And 2) My dogs think that goose poop is a rare delicacy, and they eat it up like candy. I can't get them to come back inside without a lot of difficulty because they want to get their money's worth out of the Goose Poop Buffet.
I've tried another angle, which is a CO2 BB pistol. It holds 15 shots, and even when I do hit one (aiming is not perfect), all it does is scare the birds away. Again, reactive, not preventative. It's about as effective as the dogs.
The neighborhood Homeowners' Association has contacted the DNR, but they are not interested in removing the geese. So, the nuisances freely roam the entire neighborhood and ruin yards uninhibited. I'd like to put a permanent stop to it, but I need advice.
I figure I have a couple of options for killing these things...
1) Get permission (is it a license?) for a silencer for my Ruger 10/22. Advantages: deadly precision and I have a nice scope on it. Also, I have a 2-story house, so I could easily shoot down on the birds. Disadvantage: I live within City Limits, and it's unlawful to discharge a firearm (hence the desire for the silencer).
2) Purchase a high-powered pellet rifle, which I've heard costs about as much as the silencer. Advantages: quiet and still probably deadly. Also not illegal to fire w/in City Limits (or is it??). Disadvantages: not as fun to shoot as a real rifle.[:D]
So, advice, comments, anything I missed? I'm sick of these darn geese, and I am about to go Postal on them!![:(!]

You forgot:
3)Get caught shooting waterfoul out of season, go to jail and pay big fines and in some states loose your ability to hunt for a few years.0 -
It's not a pellet gun.
It's an air rifle.0 -
If you live on a pond, you gotta put up with a little crap.[8D] 0 -
Farmer next door has a bunch of dummy owls he bought. He puts them up around his property, and the birds stay away. I think you can get them at feed stores.

Check this video out. I've seen these 4 sale at Sportsmansguide and other mail order sites. May work for you.
+1 on being illegal to shoot migratory birds, especially geese out of season. If you have an urge to spend some time at the Gray Bar Hotel, then try the Aguila Super Colibri. Very quiet on a 10/22 but you have to load it into the chamber single shot.

As soon as you said Sportsman guide, I thought of the same thing. We saw it in a catalog and thought it would have been fun to torment our last dog with that one. It would probably work with the Canada Geese.0 -

Doug
Thanks. We tried owls, too. The geese pooped on them. Really.0 -

This is most dire. Most dire indeed. I believe these geese are trained to do this by the Canadian government. First it was k.d. lang and the artificial appendix, now this. Why? Because the Canadians resent our freedoms, that's why. And you just know the geese carry disease and little vials of WMD that they drop on your lawn and in your pond. Sure they look like goose turds, but if you taste them you can tell the difference. Leave it to the Canadians with their ca-ca socialized medicine and U.S. johnson envy to train geese to crap on America.0 -
You don't know how close to the truth you are![8D] 0 -
I know of a few golf courses that have a resident border collie on hand to keep geese away. 0 -
You can tell if they are canadian "honk, eh" 0 -
get a propane powered noise cannon, you set it up on a timer
to fire every 5 to 60 minutes.
the noise scares them away.0 -
You need to watch the History channel a little more- you'll learn that life on Earth is destined to end; as such it's just a matter of time until everyone and everything that has ever caused a problem for you will be completely and irrevocably DEAD. The fact that you will also be dead is a small price to pay. 0 -
I forgot, lowes sells animal repellants
not sure, but you might just find one that works.0 -

Already checked, and they didn't have anything for any type of waterfowl.0 -

I'd thought of that as well, but our community covenants are pretty strict. I have a MUCH better chance of getting away with "illegal off-season hunting" at night w/a scope than I do setting off a noise cannon.
Actually, I wouldn't mind doing both.... *drooling*0 -

Oh man.....[:(!]if those geese are in Heaven when I get there, I will be one ticket off dead guy![:p]0 -
Oh, look at the bright side, at least there will be no baseball umpires there.[;)] 0 -
You have a big problem living in the city shooting them. Get some decoys and noise ( but what if there is a noise ordinance in your town ? ). Too bad in city or I would enjoy goose hunting in Georgia. The chemical idea I read doesn't sound bad.

k.d lang was never a serious threat......they were however responsible for Shania Twain [:p]0 -
I bought the Aguila Colibri - they are 25 grain bullets, powered by primer only - about twice the power of the pellets from my 30-year old German air-rifle. The problem with the Colibri is that they are really a dirty, fouling round that is different in nature from gunpowder. I would never want to leave my gun dirty from using them, and would be cleaning the gun every night or so.
I would use my Air-Rifle on the birds - 1000 fps 7.7 grain pellets. I doubt that many shots would result in an immediate kill, so the birds would probably fly away, taking the proof with them that they had been shot, and taking the clean-up somewhere else. This might work for a while, but sooner or later, your neighbors are gonna figure it out, and the ones who feed the feathered rats are gonna turn you in. None of the fines or judgements that others have spoken of sound appealing, so maybe you just need to "let it go".
After your dogs die from the Poop Buffet, maybe you need to get a Wolf or Coyote, and just don't feed it. Either that, or get one of those traps that electrocute rats, and open it up, hook it up to your front porch light and only turn it on when the front yard is unoccupied by kids or dogs. You will have to go out every morning early to clear away the unfortunate birds that accidentally died in your yard, though. Might still have problems with the "feeding" neighbors. Maybe buy "Rat traps" by the gross, and put out a few every night...they would fly away also.
Look around, maybe there is a birthcontrol program for the Geese - you might be able to spread around some appealing little pellets in your grass.
Throw your extension cord end in the lake, and plug the other end in your outdoor light fixture, turning it on whenever you feel there are adequate numbers nearby!
As winter approaches, make a little warming shed for the flying rats, heated with a poorly running propane heater - let them get Carbon Monoxide poisoning accidentally.
Get friendly with them - go out and decorate your new-found flying pets with colorful Ty-Rap necklaces!
Cut off all those tangled treble hooks and fishing line that your nephew left you in your fishinggear - leave the resultant mess in the front yard - the nice birds will clean it up from the yard for you.
Decorate their eggs with nice colors for Easter - vaseline works, too.
Buy a RoboMow, and program it to mow while the geese are in your yard. Paint eyes on it. "Two birds with one stone", Haw Haw!!0
