About to go on a killing spree, need advice please
OK, we've got a serious problem with Canadian Geese. I have heard they are protected, but I can't seem to find confirmation one way or the other. The problem is that they are poop machines. We live on a small pond, and about 100 of these geese think it's their home (instead of MINE -- the nerve!![:D]).
The come in our yard and literally make it unusable. Not only do they tear up my beautifully manicured lawn, but they crap like it's their job. My kids can't even go out and play back there, and the lawn mower doesn't suck up the hundreds of mounds of pellets. I used to let my dogs out to chase the geese away, but: 1) it's only a temporary solution, and a reactive one at that. It doesn't prevent the geese from coming into the yard, as they're not scared anymore. And 2) My dogs think that goose poop is a rare delicacy, and they eat it up like candy. I can't get them to come back inside without a lot of difficulty because they want to get their money's worth out of the Goose Poop Buffet.
I've tried another angle, which is a CO2 BB pistol. It holds 15 shots, and even when I do hit one (aiming is not perfect), all it does is scare the birds away. Again, reactive, not preventative. It's about as effective as the dogs.
The neighborhood Homeowners' Association has contacted the DNR, but they are not interested in removing the geese. So, the nuisances freely roam the entire neighborhood and ruin yards uninhibited. I'd like to put a permanent stop to it, but I need advice.
I figure I have a couple of options for killing these things...
1) Get permission (is it a license?) for a silencer for my Ruger 10/22. Advantages: deadly precision and I have a nice scope on it. Also, I have a 2-story house, so I could easily shoot down on the birds. Disadvantage: I live within City Limits, and it's unlawful to discharge a firearm (hence the desire for the silencer).
2) Purchase a high-powered pellet rifle, which I've heard costs about as much as the silencer. Advantages: quiet and still probably deadly. Also not illegal to fire w/in City Limits (or is it??). Disadvantages: not as fun to shoot as a real rifle.[:D]
So, advice, comments, anything I missed? I'm sick of these darn geese, and I am about to go Postal on them!![:(!]

We have a bad deer problem in our neighborhood and found out that you can have them declared as pests and then may legally have them removed. I am not sure of the process so check on it.
Once you find if it is legal, my advice is to poison them. Especially if it is a pond as you could make some sort of floating platform for the poisoned food so other animals were not effected.
Good Luck!0 -
It is a federal crime to shoot these birds, out of season and lacking the necessary licenses/stamps.
Nevertheless, in your situation I would shoot them. Obviously there is an overpopulation of these creatures in your area.
Figure out a silencer and shoot 'em at night with a scope.
I assure you they are some of the best meat on the planet. I have had Canada goose cut into chunks, battered and fried. Delicious.0 -
Soak corn in vodka (cheap vodka). Put a large amount of vodka soaked corn out for the pretty little birds, wait until they are laying down and go pick them up and throw them in a burlap bag and dispose of them quietly. shhhhhhhhhhh. Don't tell anyone!!
Just a thought...........0 -
Call the DNR and tell them you think they have "Bird Flu".[:D]
I don't think the "water" thing will work. Golf course sprinklers never seem to bother them.
Maybe you could "bait" someone elses yard>[:D]
Maybe an electrified wire mesh grid?
Seriously it must be close to hunting season. Likely they fly off sometime during the day to feed. Try following them for a few days and find out where they go. Then locate a few hunters and give them the heads up. They will be more than happy to thin them out for you.0 -

Go to season dates on right hand side. Goose season is in !!0 -
You could try a scare crow?[?] 0 -
You my friend need to take up the sport of Falconry! 0 -
Dyfonate is an insecticide used with corn to kill rootworms and such. It has a special feature. The insecticide is sprayed onto a sand, sold in the dry form and when dried it is shiney. Unlike other dry insecticeds used by farmers, birds are attractked to this one. They eat it and die.
It is very effective, but when the neighbors notice a flock of dead Canada Geese, they sometimes can ask questions. Then the autopsies are performed....0 -
I agree with the Canadian Govt scheme trying to destroy us.
They sent us a Governor in Michigan and they now may have to close down the state on October 1st. At her last State of the State address, she was bragging about how many new businesses she was drawing into our state to justify her jet-setting across the world on our dimes and now they are talking about shutting down the Govt.
Liberals, Phoooey!
As far as the geese, there isn't much you can do.
People have tried to relocate geese from problem areas in the past. Now, here is an animal that can fly a couple thousand miles a year to warmer and cooler climates and people think they can move them 40 or 50 miles away and they are gonna stay there?
Fill in your pond or get used to having geese there. If you shoot them illegally, you can be charged under both state and federal laws at the same time for the same offense. They are probably worse this year due to lack of water in other areas.
Or maybe you can spread a big black plastic tarp on your neighbors property. Hunters have discovered that when water holes dry up, they can lure geese into a black plastic tarp, because from the air, it looks like water to the geese.0 -
Since shooting out season would be bad, lets go the other way and wait till season opens then invite every goose hunter you can find over to fill up. Offer to buy the ammo if needed...
(of course this assumes hunting is allowed in??? is this place inside city limits?)0 -
This is not the first troublesome thing to come out of Canada. Let's not forget Bryan Adams.

Hi;
I understand the Indians use to catch geese by coning them. They made a cone out of Birch bark and coated the inner lip with pine sap. A bit of corn in the bottom of the cone and some spread on the ground and you are set. The bird pecks the corn in the cone and the cone is stuck over it head. You can walk up to it and invite it to a real dinner. Several students got thru grad school by occasionally coning a duck or goose from a nearby golf course. If you decide to try it, you may want to use modern readily available materials. Good luck0 -
Go scuba diving in the lake...every one you can, swim up under them, and pull them under. Wait a while, and then release. Rinse and repeat. 0 -

So are you saying those friends "gave great cone?"
If you don't know what I'm talking about, go watch old re-runs of Saturday Night Live.0 -

Talk with your State Department of Game and Fish to find out your legal options and to see if they can help. 0 -
Throw a bunch of dried corn in your neighbors yard. They will leave your yard for theirs. 0 -
What about Carly Simon? Are we OK with her? And even if we're not, I ain't gettin' rid of this album cover!!! 0 -
Any suggestions involving killing or harming the birds are ill-advised and illegal. The last guy I heard of who got caught killing a goose got a year of probation and a $5,000 fine.
I would try a scare-crow and if that doesn't work contact the fish & game office for help.0 -
Don't forget the people at county extension. 0 -
I thought I read somewhere that if its on your property its fair game anytime of the season? Don't know if its true or not, know for something I know is true. I was in my last year of school this time last year, a kid decided to throw a rock at some geese. Just so happens the rock hit one, broke its leg and was flopping around all over the place, I saw this and knew that in the Chicago suburbs that they are a federally protected animal, so I was like O F he did it know. Sure enough about a half hour later they pulled him from class and later found out he was looking at a ten thousand dollar fine and or 10 years in the federal pen and or both. Sucks for him needless to say he never got that degree he wanted but got a different kind. Attempted murder or a goose in the first degree[;)]
Save a goose, shot a turkey vulture[:p] If you have never seen a turkey vulture you haven't live[:)]d0 -
Some states classify them as agricultural pests. Check with your county extension agent. 0 -
I say it's "Canada Geese" not "Canadian Geese".
Anybody here in agreement with me?0 -
Is a canadian goose like a french kiss? 0 -
That would be a French Lick 0 -
Seattle hired a guy with a black lab.

You are 100% correct.[:)]

You could use the cone method and record the goose's distress cries. If you are electronically inclined the recording playback could be activated by a motion sensor when geese arrive. Should work for at least a while. Good luck. 0 -
not only are they destroying your lawn they are destroying your pond, they are pooping machines, and don't have to be on land to do so
you can introduce just a few domestic geese, most are territorial especially swans {mean bastages}, 12 gauge bird bombs work pretty well, and explode on impact, aim for the females {the one always in front} geese are monogomas and make the females uncomfortable they will all leave
if all else fails remember the 3 S's
shoot, shovel, and shut up, 22-250 head shots are very entertaining0
