Is "survival" really all that likely?
Every so often a "SHTF" thread pops up on the board. Generally the topic discussed is what weapons are best suited for the scenerio, sometimes the discussion revolves around whether it is best to stay put in your home or "head for the hills"
Even under the worst imaginable scenerio, I'd imagine some people would survive, even if only through pure dumb luck. My question is....is survival all that likely even for people who consider themselves to be "prepared"?
Lots of talk about weapons.....not alot of talk about food, shelter, etc. Can't live on Raman noodles forever, ya know?

No one ever survives, they just prolong the inevitable..[}:)] 0 -
Its very easy to set back and plan what you would do. But the odds of whatever you expect to happen isnt. It will be something sudden and more than likely we wont be prepared for it. MY 2 cents! 0 -
There are many websites that advocate food storage, gardens, essentials for emergencies. Most of the sites give suggestions for preparedness, area specific, for things like natural disaster, economic hard times, a failing gov't, etc.
With the weather acting up the way it is today, I think it's a good idea to be prepared for power outages, cooler/warmer temps than normal. The other possible problems I'll leave alone today.0 -
Extreme SHTF scenarios may be unpleasant to survive, but they are extremely more so to die in. Besides, the preparation is fun! We get to stockpile cool stuff, and feel smarter than our neighbors. I like this game!
Seriously, we see localized SHTF regularly. Hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, etc. In extreme instances, these bring out the worst in the criminal element. We all saw this in New Orleans and Florida in recent years. A handful of shotgun shells was worth their weight in gold.
It is healthy to remember the basics of life: food, water, fuel, defense. Occasiionally, we relearn these the hard way.
Now, if your ultimate SHTF involved mass social collapse -- say, through gov't or economic failure -- or sudden tyrannical loss of freedoms, then it gets a bit more complicated. But it would be no different from New Orleans except in scale.0 -
Knowing my luck, I'd stockpile everything I needed....
Food
Water
Guns
Ammo
Medical Supplies
Fuel (did you know adding sta-bil will keep gas fresh for 2 years? I didn't)
clothes
etc....
....Then my house would burn down0
