Is "survival" really all that likely?
Every so often a "SHTF" thread pops up on the board. Generally the topic discussed is what weapons are best suited for the scenerio, sometimes the discussion revolves around whether it is best to stay put in your home or "head for the hills"
Even under the worst imaginable scenerio, I'd imagine some people would survive, even if only through pure dumb luck. My question is....is survival all that likely even for people who consider themselves to be "prepared"?
Lots of talk about weapons.....not alot of talk about food, shelter, etc. Can't live on Raman noodles forever, ya know?

There are some among us who are prepared. A 12 month e-food supply is a nice round number. There is more than FOOD to think about. Med supplies and field surgery supplies, gasoline, COMMS, summer/winter shelter, cooking supplies, water supplies, iodine tabs, ect.
Some of us did our homework.
If the SHTF don't come here, I don't prepare for nuthin'. We don't need no stinkin supplies. [:o)]0 -

I guess it would depend on where you live, your family situation, and your rescources. Most of us probably wouldn't last as long as we would like to think.0 -
SHTF for me would be a quake, and someone coming on my property to get food or water which I would give them is no problem,but I have been thru a few and the looting is the biggest problem ! 0 -

Depends on the situation. What kind of SHTF scenario? Nuke, bio, depression (like '29), pandemic (bird flu, etc.). Some will probably survive, many wont. Me, I'll do what I can with mostly what I have, and stick around as long as I can. 0 -
Visit the dentist right now and get your teeth taken care of, unless of course you want to be your own dentist when the SHTF. Consider having elective surgeries like getting your appendix removed because if you can't stand to yank an infected tooth I doubt you'll be able to cut yourself open and snip that little bugger before it reptures and kills you! Your doctor will love it because you'll be paying him in CASH since your medical insurance won't foot the bill for something like this: "I'm telling you, the S-*-*t is going to hit the fan soon and I can't take a chance, I gotta have it out now"!.

Got plenty of food, water, fuel, first aid supplies, ammo, guns, etc.

I know how to sail. I live less than 2 miles from the bay. Lots of sailboats moored there...big ones in the 40-60 ft range. Perfect for blue water sailing. I'll just take my family and supplies and "borrow" one. I don't think the owner will miss it...what with him being the hors d'oeuvre at the zombie rave party and all.
I'll sail away, Jimmy Buffet and Styx tunes blasting on the stereo, to perhaps Costa Rica (good fishing and diving there). On the way, I'll make a pit-stop in Cuba...stock up on some rum, drink umbrellas and cigars...maybe dance a little rumba with the senoritas, too.[:p]
I'll be sure to "keep in touch" with you guys.

Short of a pandemic, most of us will be watching the SHTF on Fox News. It will take a really HUGE event to have much more than a regional impact. 0 -

if they were only prepard with food and fuel it would be easy to kill them and take it for yourself, but if there were truly prepard......

True. But I bet most people would not be able to maintain a good security plan. Sometimes it is best to live on the offense, less chance of getting preyed on.[}:)]0 -

I have a couple of those old savage over under combos. One is a 22 magnum over 20 gauge, the other is a 30-30 over 12 gauge.... I would asume this counts as a shotgun rifle... :-)0 -

I really do not think that a SHTF situation will occur in my lifetime.... I make no special preparations for one... But I do can food every year, and have a nice stockpile of componets to make ammo, so worst case I will be fine for a long time. 0 -
I'm good to go for the next 12 hours.
if SHTF....I'll be making it up as I go along. I have some ammo (and what ammo I have will dictate what arms I can use 'cause it's not a planned thing), and I'm still pretty nimble.
Beyond that.....i'll regret spending my precious hours on things other than planning for the SHTF scenario!0 -
Unless you're a millionare no single person can stockpile enough supplies to sustain for an extended period-like 2-3 years. Even if you could, keeping it secure from the looters would be overwhelming for an individual. You can't guard your stash while gardening, hunting, or repairing/improving housing and implements. These activities would be essential to suplementing your food supply. In addition, just venturing outside your "secure" area to attend to these activities would be dangerous for one individual since you can't work and provide security alone. Look at the pioneers. How3 many single family homesteads were wiped out when raiders killed/captured the man while he was in the fields leaving the family unprotected. 0 -

In all honesty I'd be more concerned with home invasion than I am a SHTF scenario ... including zombies[^]0 -
I don't know what the percentages are, but I am CERTAIN that those who give some thought of surviving will do so in a higher percentage than those who don't. So, I have given a lot of thought to ensuring my family's survival. Hey, if we don't, then someone will get a lot of helpful goodies from our prep. 0 -

To introduce a bit of a different note, I have always pondered exactly how desireable survival might be. I certainly do not have any Ranger fantisies regarding doomsday, I am just not the freehold on Ruby Ridge type, but if it came down to looting and shooting, what future would there be? Not one I would want to leave my kids. I did not want to leave kids this future. I have enormous faith in Man's ability to survive in some mimimal fashion, but I am pretty sure I am not interested in the quality of life. 0 -

And yes, it is good to be prepared. Water, food, etc. Certainly helped out with the mindset when I had no power for 2 weeks after hurricanes here in N Fl. a couple years ago... I'm sure that after Katrina the folks in LA, Miss, etc. had the same outlook. The Cali fires, earthquakes, massive snow/ice storms, etc. can all put ya in a survival mindset (if not survival situation)0
