Do you like catfish?
Here my friends is a picture of what we catch in central Illinois. 30" 10lb channel cat from a farm pond. This is about the average size we catch. The cable spool they are sitting on is at least 36"-40" in diameter to put things in perspective if you don't believe that is how big they are. [:D][:p]
Oh yeah, don't ask what we use for bait, IDNR might not like it... [;)]

...some of the best meat out there! I like to roll them up in some tin foil with butter and a few spices and throw them on the grill....UMMMM GOOD![:p]0 -

That is a good looking catch.
Our last outing we caught 11 keeper Channel cats that averaged 8 to 12lbs and a gang of them that went around 2 to 3 pounds. They will be ready for a fish fry Sat.
We caught them on minnows and a special mixture of Hamburger, Garlic powder and Cheese.
When I were living in North Carolina we used a katoboa spthat would only nest in katoboa trees and made "web nest" much like a caterpillar. The warm had a green color to them that glowed in water after dark. Those things were the best bait that I have ever used for cats.
We have a plant here in WV that I will not name.. When you find it a get some of the sap/juice out of it. You can use it with almost a bare hook and catch cats until you arm breaks.
Have you been on the Illinois river and saw those huge jumping carp yet? I saw them for the first time last year and today, Fox News (I think) did a story on them. Those darn things will knock you out when they hit you.0 -
Nice fish. They are great to eat once you get the bad meat out of em. Deep fried or grilled. Where abouts in IL are you fishing. I do most of mine in the Lake Shelbyville area. 0 -

ON the Illinois side of the Mississippi River there is a town called Keithsburg just north of Burlington. On the North side of the grain elevator there is a creek that feeds into the river. Some big catfist just sit there at the mouth of the creek. Worked with a guy that pulled some monsters out of there.
Down in Mound City just up river from Cairo on the Ohio River, I saw boats that would anchor themselves to wheat barges being loaded with speaker magnets as they fished.0 -

Love catfish, but when I fished it was usually for bass, largemouth or small. Have managed to catch a few cat though, on rubber worms, and top floaters. 0 -

If you like Catfish then you should try and make at least one trip up here to fish the Red River of the North. One of the best and least fished Catfish rivers in North America.

I usually get a few small catfish while walleye fishing in Lake Erie. Biggest I ever got was about 8 pounds, my dad pulled in a 36" Channel cat once though off Davis Besse power plant. Succesful at being ugly.0 -
We actually have one for a 'pet!'
My youngest son brought one home alive
from the Colorado River (I don't know why)
and turned it loose in our Koi pond about
two years ago. It's been spotted a few times
and seems happily adjusted to the pond.
... as far as eating ... the secret is in the
cooking. I like baked fillets, brushed with
butter, coated with spices, and baked with
tomatoes and chile peppers at 600?F - nine
minutes - in a gas cooker that we have out back
... in the summer ... with Mexican side dishes ...
can't be beat!

I have kept a number of bullheads caught 1" long, and have kept and bred a number of species of Asian and neotropical catfish. Yep, I like them fine. I even eat channel cat. 0 -
Yes, I like catfish filets too. Coat with mustard and yellow corn meal, then deep fry until a crispy golden brown - excellent eating! 0 -

The largest channel I ever caught was a 7.5 lb. Oldtimers here tell me that anything much larger than that are blue cat. Channels are a speckled golden color. Caught a 46 lb. flathead cat once that was 48" long. My bait shop mounted the head, gave the carcass to a family here, they couldn't eat it, said it tasted like moss smells. Absolute best fish I ever had came (bought) out of a barge on the Ohio river just south of McLeansboro, IL. The ladies at the reunion cooked them in big tubs of boiling lard till they floated to the top. 0 -

I used to fish with Katoba/Catoba worms when I was a kid. They are an outstanding bait for about any kind of fish you want to go after. We used to sell Katoba worms for 10? each, and this was back when 10? was worth a dollar. I haven't seen a Katoba tree in years.0 -

It's all in how you do it. This is the easy way. Nail his head to a post or barn door or outbuilding wall or anything that will hold him securely. Cut around the base of his head. Cut down the center of his back from the head cut. Pull enough skin away from the meat on each side of the center cut to be able to get a pair of pliers on the skin. Then just peel him like a banana. Pull the nail out and use a sharp fillet knife to cut a slab of meat off each side. You don't even have to gut him, and unlike some fillets, there is NO BONE in what you eat.0 -
In GA they are mostly pond raised under contract and harvested small (8') That way you can fry em whole and crispy, sides of cole slaw, hush puppies and fried sweet taters. Bud Light long necks is the beverage of choice. [:)][:)] 0
