Do you like catfish?
Here my friends is a picture of what we catch in central Illinois. 30" 10lb channel cat from a farm pond. This is about the average size we catch. The cable spool they are sitting on is at least 36"-40" in diameter to put things in perspective if you don't believe that is how big they are. [:D][:p]

Les I don't know where your located. But there's a Caltalpa (yeah I hadda look up the spelling)Tree located just east of the Nitro exit on the south (eastbound) side of I64. Sets up a little hollow about 50 yards off the road on the state right of way. It used to be full of worms in late spring/summer. Since I don't live there anymore I guess I can give up the "secret"! Don't let the State Troopers catch you stopping on the interstate! (I think they consider it their private stash)
That plant you refered to contains Anethole which is a precursor for Mescaline! [:0] And used to be against the law in WV to use it for fishing! (dunno if they've changed it or not)
No wonder the fish like it! [:D] (it's not that big a secret among country folks)
Do not EAT any fish out of the Kanawha river! (Downstream of the London Locks they're mutants)

We caught them on minnows and a special mixture of Hamburger, Garlic powder and Cheese.
When I were living in North Carolina we used a katoboa spthat would only nest in katoboa trees and made "web nest" much like a caterpillar. The warm had a green color to them that glowed in water after dark. Those things were the best bait that I have ever used for cats.
We have a plant here in WV that I will not name.. When you find it a get some of the sap/juice out of it. You can use it with almost a bare hook and catch cats until you arm breaks.
Have you been on the Illinois river and saw those huge jumping carp yet? I saw them for the first time last year and today, Fox News (I think) did a story on them. Those darn things will knock you out when they hit you.

I used to fish with Katoba/Catoba worms when I was a kid. They are an outstanding bait for about any kind of fish you want to go after. We used to sell Katoba worms for 10? each, and this was back when 10? was worth a dollar. I haven't seen a Katoba tree in years.
Catawba Worms are great fish bait. My grandfather had a Catawba Tree near the front yard on the old farm in East Texas. It might still be there, but when we went fishing, we'd most always take a bunch of the Catawba Worms for bait.
I think that the tree gets its name from the Catawba Indians, who lived near the Catawba River in North and South Carolina.0 -

goldfish do make good cat bait, as does cutbait.
we get catalpa worms around here, and they work well.
When we get monarch caterpillars on our beans those work well too.
I fillet them the same way I fillet bluegill. It doesn't matter how large or small a fish is, it will always have two sides.

We cut all the way around behind the head, pull the skin off down towards the tail, break the head off, dump the guts out, carefully filet both sides off, cut planks into small fritters, soak fritters in water, change water a few times, bread in batter of choice, fry until they float and are golden brown and enjoy. I shove the tip of a stout knife blade in the center of the cat's head, high above the eyes, and make a short slice toward the mouth, and they die almost instantly. I then hold the cat by the mouth and gill, and make one shallow horizontal cut across the back of the head. Then strip the skin off as JamesRK noted, but I use wide mouth catfish pliers. Once skinned, I slice out all fat. If I opt not to filet the cat, I might decide to cut it into one inch steaks, bone and all, and then deep fry the traditional way, or grill them. 0 -

I found this picture of Catawba Worms on the internet. They said they sell for $10.00 a dozen, so I guess I wasn't to far out of line when I was getting 10? each for them.
We used to pinch their little heads off and turn them inside out with a broom straw then thread them on the hook.0
