How much HP?
I was in my garage when this guy comes up off the street and starts to talk to me. He notices a couple race motors that I have sitting in the corner. We start talking about drag race, it so happens that he has a 91 Corvette he races. He had it park across the street, he shows it to me and it's a stock 350 TPI with 150 shot of nitrous and complete Flowmaster exhaust. I asked him whats been to the fuel delivery. He said the intake has been worked, not sure what he means by "worked". He just got the thing and really didn't know that much. He runs in the 12's. I told him that was slow, I guess he didn't like me telling him that, but it is. He mention that he wanted to put a spoiler on the back for more down force. I told him that was a bad idea. I told him at best he's putting out maybe 400 hp, that's if it's got an upgraded fuel delivery system, which I didn't see. That car is design to run 160 plus stock without a spoiler. I know you can't get 160 out of that in the quarter. A spoiler with create drag and down force slows you down too. It's not a course racer you only need enough down force to keep you in your lane.
Well by now he's getting kind of mad, hey I'm sorry, but I'm just wasn't empressed. He went so far as to said his Vette could hold it own against anything my dad or I had. He also pointed to a motor that was sitting next to the door and said his motor would dyno more than that motor, because that motor didn't have notrious. I told him that was 502 marine motor. He only wishes his motor puts out as much hp as that 502. I just told him I'll see him at Beanblossom (local track). Onlu problem now is I don't have a drag car.
So honestly guys how much hp do you think a stock 91 Vette puts out with 150 shot of notrous and no axuillary fuel devilery? I would hope he was at least smart enough to retard the timing.

He went to all the trouble of buying that car, having it modified, just so he could stop and talk to you. And you shot him down. You will never get a date like that. How about some bikini pictures ? We need pictures. 0 -
cutie - no offense, but you sound like a complete novice when it comes to cars 0 -

I am, my dad informed me that the fuel injection should supply the extra fuel when needed. I'm used to seeing notrious with carberated motors. I guess I need to stick with 2 stokes.0 -
Just an educated guess but with his whole setup I'd be surprised if he dynoed more than (or even) 400hp at the rear wheels. mid 80's to early 90's GM V8s pretty much sucked. 0 -
Bean blossom......Where you from? .I'm from North vernon... 0 -
NO WAY is the car putting out 400 hoses. Maybe 300...at best.. I dragged in the late 70s with a stock bodied 67 Camaro with a LS 7 454 RAT POWERED MOTOR. It was 460 + horses and pushed the car down the track at 11:40 at 130 plus.. Impressive in those days..,..hm maybe get another car???? hmm ,,,nambu 0 -

Let's say the guy had a cat back system and the intake had been "worked". That probably means the intake runners had slight work done on them, maybe a little grinding and polishing. The 150 shot is the biggest HP addition to the engine.
Given all that, he probably is running in the low 13s with close to 400 HP. He might make it into the high 12s if he went to a lower gear ratio. 2.59 gears make that thig extremely long legged. His top speed might even approach 170mph with the nitrous.
I had an 89 corvette with a full race exhaust (no Cats), enhanced intake with 42lb fuel pressure to the stock injectors. High performance ignition, racing computer chip. I was only running 13.95 in the 1/4 mile, but I hit 155mph on a long stretch of highway once. The car had more in it, but I was coming up (fast) on traffic. it kind of freaks people out when they are going 80 and you pass them at 150. A bit dangerous too!0 -
Let's see. Stock 91 vette with a stock TPI 350(195-200HP), Flowmaster exhaust,150 shot NOS. Probably nothing tuned he might have 320HP. Your 502 MArine engine--- Made for high rpm's---It will smoke his on an engine dyno, motor to motor. Looks like he needs someone to spank his oh so bad vette. I can definetly smoke that vette. If his is runnin 12's (which i doubt) then mine runs 9's. 0 -
400...about on the button.
Your 502 marine motor...is not much in the horsepower department.
Drag racing is kind of funny...EVERYBODY runs "in the 12's"...when in fact, they would be lucky to get in the high 13's.0 -
95 Pontiac trans am, LT1 350 ( FACTORY RATED 275 H.P.) Stock internals, Full Edelbrock/ Flowmaster (Headers, mufflers,etc..) exhaust, K/N cold air complete system with addition of 58mm Holley throttle body, upgraded MAF, 160 THERMOSTAT, MSD6 ignition box with matching MSD distributer and coil, 4.10 geared stock differential with addition of Eaton Posi. and a Diff. stud girdle type cover, Subframe coonectors, KYB shocks, Aeromotive 255 lph fuel pump, 175 Nitrous Works (wet type) No2 plate system, and had the Computer tuned for all. Plus a few little things and still tuning. Maybe about midsummer i'll stroke out a nother LT1 to a 396 and drop in. I do know i got a 12.1-12.3 1/4 mile car. 0 -
Depends on the application the 502 was meant for. If the 502 was to be put in say a Baja Sport boat then it can range from 350 all the wat to 500 h.p.... Just depends on the model it was made for. 0 -
Oh i forgot 500 overstall converter, and tranny has been reworked. 0 -
in 91 chev added the LT-1 motor as an option for corvette. 325 hp @5800 rpm. they also come with factory traction assist which would hold up to occaisional racing but tends to slow a car down in straight drags. Nitros would be a waste on a car that slow. bracket racer at best and when its you against yourself why bother...it mught be fun to give it a squirt when the car reaches top gear just to get to redline quicker
As to the spoiler; the acceleration of the car in a quarter mile would give the rear wheels all the downforce they need.. if hook-up is a problem, different tires (taller slicks)are the answer
By the way traci...a 12 second QM is very fast for a streetable car it would reach a trap speed of 114-117 MPH but even 400hp will not propel a 4800lb corvette to that ET
I ran a 70 chevelle 454 (over bored to 502)SS TH400 auto on 32 in tall ten inch slicks
I could manage 12.89 and 112 mph redlined at 6600 RPM in top gear
with street tires that car would turn sideways when it downshifted at 60 it was a torque monster

Anybody else hear that legendary sixties Mopar drag racer "Dandy" Dick Landy died last Thursday? He was definitely one of my 1/4 mile heros when I was a teenager. 413 Wedge, 426 Wedge, and 426 Hemi. Nothing beat Mopars through the lights back in those days.
RIP Mr. Landy

Mallory Ignition
Bored .030"
11:1 compression
Holley 750 Dbl Pumper

Built C6 Automatic
Estimated near 400HP+/-. Hasn't seen the track since it was finished. Don't know if it ever will. Ran mid - high 14's before the build with 300HP. I'm guessing we could hit mid to low 13's.
Gearheaddad has an awesome Camaro, where is he?0 -
I am very happy with what i have, especially when i can drive it on 300 mile trips, and still have a bit of fun with it. Heck i only got 5500.00 in it. And it looks like new, hasn't been ragged out or even wrecked/painted. 0 -

Say hello to my 'little friend' 528ci hemi. It's now residing in my truck in my signature. Send that vette my way, I could use some extra cash. Dave

Have to disagree with you on the 502 Marine motor. I've got one in a '63 Ford Econoline PU Wheelstander that's been worked - it's pushing 600 HP, will turn in the mid 9's.

Don't think that is anythng close to a 502 marine GM crate motor. The accel coil gives that away.

Cutie: Being a guy myself I can tell ya most men dont like anyone telling them anything. Even more men dont like to hear anything from a woman, if they arecute and talking cars then the "man" is looking to impress the woman. I would not spend any time worrying about this at all. We had a lot of young ladies that ran some mighty nice cars at the track and even getting their butts handed to them a lot of guys would make some sorry excuses as to why they lost.
To me this is less a car thing than it is a wounded ego. When I was running my car I knew EXACTLY what times I could run. I will try to post a picture of it soon.
not the best of pictures but I have very few.0 -
that corvette won't get anywhere near 400hp (and I mean REAL HORSEPOWER, measured at THE REAR WHEEL). My pard has a 99' C5 vette, with cold air intake, aftermarket heads, custom cam, new intake, stainless headers with x-pipe and flowmasters, computer program upgrade, 4:10 gear ratio, fuel system upgrades (whatever they are) the whole nine yards, race clutch, etc etc he has just now broken 410ish HP at the rear wheel. He had nitrous,..but with rev limiters it was an excerise to shift the car, he took it out and sold it. 0 -
He probably is getting 400hp(w/bottle) and its probable to run mid 12's in that 3000lb car, hard to say unless you run it but if he's putting a 150 shot on that stock 350 I bet it wont last long.No replacement for displacement! 0 -

You maybe the most honest guy in here, or at least you may have hit the nail on the head. I would love to run this guy at the track, but I don't have a car to race. My dad has a car, but his is not street legal, so I think they maybe in a different class. That and I can't see him letting me drive it.0 -

I love that thing. Is the engine in the bed? Anyone who thinks a 502 doesn't make HP has never been had one. I haven't seen a 502 marine motor make less than 400 hp. Most I've seen make well over 500hp. I've seen some make as much if not more than the 572 marines.0 -

I agree, that's one truck I wish was in my garage.0 -
get a program called Desktop Dyno. put out by Mr. Gasket. with a flick of the mouse, you can tell it what motor with what on/in it, and it will give you an entire HP/torque curve.
for different cams, intake, etc. there are 'profiles' you can download to tell the prog that's what you are using. (it already has dozens out of the box)
I could re-install it on my computer and tell you anything u wanted, but... I'm too lazy.0 -
eh, heck with it. I'm bored. I installed it, loaded a typical chevy 350 small block street rod with 4.0 lb/min nitro, here's the results. (I don't know what a "150 shot" is)
if you can look at the control panel and tell me what u want to tweak, I can run another simulation and show a graph of the results.
anything else you want to dyno lemme know, i'm still bored.0
