And as long as people keep forking over their stupid money, it's gonna keep getting worse. And I agree, if they are gonna get that kind of money per seat, there should be no tax dollars involved.

I agree. Here is the next paragraph from the article.

quote:The prices seem other-worldly. That's putting it mildly. Jones is fond of saying the public will determine the market. If he sells out the new palace, either Texans are flush with more money than the rest of the country, or they'll mortgage their futures to make sure they see how far Romo can take this team in the next few years.

I guess when you haven't been to a Super Bowl in 12 years, and haven't won a playoff game in about that long, you do crazy things!

That, plus the NFL cable channel monopoly/blackouts, has just about put me off the only mainstream pro sport I watch.

I know I'll catch lotsa grief, but I gotta say it: NASCAR was my first Pro Sport (even before it was NASCAR) and it is looking like it will be my last and only.

I'd rather watch pro curling than any of the "major" (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) sports, at least there is some exitement there.

When the Bengals built their new stadium they did a similar thing to their season ticket holders. Wasn't quite as steep of a price but still in the several thousand dollar range.

Then why do you have a big Titans logo as your signature?

Oh that's right, you said PRO sports!

As for the prices, if people pay it, more power to Jerry. If people don't, the prices will drop.

The stadium is a billion. The tax payers paid for some of it (hello, they also stand to reap some of the benefit), corporate sponsors paid for part of it, Jones paid for part of it, fans pay for part of it.

Just because the Titans only claim to fame is that they LOST a Superbowl, doesn't make you qualified to judge what the fans in Dallas want or will pay for when it comes to the Cowboys. The public here already voted the stadium in. The market will determine ticket sales.

Instead of stirring anti-Dallas crap, perhaps you should concentrate on backing your superstar team, the mighty Titans/Oilers.

How many folks here even go to the games? Hell, I've invited a few of my GB friends and so far, no takers. The price? Free.

I bet most on here wouldn't even buy the season tickets, much less the seat options. And you know, that's fine. Sit at home on the couch and watch Terry, Boomer, and Deion for free, I'll be at the game helping pay the way for you.

    GO COWBOYS!!!

I am a taxpayer, and I benefited not one iota from the construction of Jerry Jones' private business establishment, nor from the Ballpark in Arlington, though I helped pay for both.

Pro athletes are paid way too much money, and as I have pointed out before, most of them that are overpaid, if not for their God-given and steroid-enhanced talent, would be either in prison or working a fast food drive-up window, because they aren't smart enough or educated enough, or ethical enough to get a decent job working with decent people.

There should be a salary scale for pro athletes. A first string whatever pays this much money, whether you play for this team or that. Period. It should be good money, more than the moron could ever make without his athletic ability, but not multi-millions of dollars. Even if the highest paid Cowboy was paid $250,000 a season, and he could not better that by going to a different team, it is still 10 times more money than he could expect if he were not a muscle-bound monster. Oh, yes, there is a risk of disabling injury, so we could also establish a minimum number of years that salary would have to be paid, so the poor guy wouldn't have to go on SSI if he got a turf toe.

If a player made that kind of money, and played for 10 years, and if he was conservative and invested well, he could live very nicely in retirement, better than 99% of the rest of us. And it would help get ticket prices down to where the average fan could still afford to take his family to the game.

And if they kicked about not having "enough" money, well, just tell them that McDonald's is hiring.

Most of the retired athletes from the old days are doing all right, and they never made a tiny fraction of what some of these bozos are paid.

    Wow!

You guys could benefit from an economics class at the community college. And perhaps a political science course dealing with communism v. democracy.

NUNN, who is paid from taxes, has not seen any benefit? When 85,000 people come into your neighborhood for the day they generate a LOT of tax revenue which goes along with the purchase goods and services. This, dear rocket scientists, pays a lot of local folks, a lot of money.

Who pays your salary NUNN? Last I checked, the tax payers. Does Texas have a State income tax? No. Then where does the money come from? Various state and local property taxes, sales taxes, etc. By the way, how much have you personally paid for the Arlington stadium, David?

Secondly, why don't you cry about movie stars making too much money? Doesn't Tom Hanks get like $25 million a picture and more? Gosh, all he does is read some lines and sit in his trailer! He should be capped on his earnings and let the studios, who make the profit and take the risk, make even more money off his talent. So what if he is the reason folks pay to see the movie!? So what if the move made $250 million? Tom should get scale, cause hell, its a priviledge to act in the movies!

Hello! Sports are entertainment. If a person is a big money generator, whether for movies, sports, or whatever, he should be paid commenserate with the revenue generated off their draw. Period. Once again, the market (that nasty old free market system) sets the price.

Fact is, we still live in a free market economy, though not for long judging from the lack of stem cell activity on display here.

    GO COWBOYS!!

Yeah, I can say whatever I want about the Cowboys. And can judge that the cost is absolutly ridiculous just for the right to buy tickets for a game. It is outrageous!

quote:Instead of stirring anti-Dallas crap, perhaps you should concentrate on backing your superstar team, the mighty Titans/Oilers.

When the Titans do something THAT stupid, I will be on them like I am on Jerry. The most expensive PSL in LP Field is $4500. A FAR CRY from the $16,000 to $150,000 Jerry is gold-digging for.

quote:I bet most on here wouldn't even buy the season tickets, much less the seat options.

Well...Don't count me among "most" folks here. I own 4 season tickets to the Titans. Guess I am stupid as I have to work every Sunday morning, so hardly ever get to use them. Will be there on the 23rd when they play the Jets. Saw them once in preseason, so out of the 10 games, I have seen 2 in person. No problem, I sell them at face value to friends or associates and let them use them.

I don't care what team it is, it is nothing more than extortion to charge those prices, even if there are idiots out there that will pay the price. If the economy keeps going into the crapper, Guess Jerry can blow it up and claim insurance on it.

Matteo..go back and keep wishing for your team to do something good. I know not winning for 12 going on 13 years is hard to bear. But you can deal with it. There is always "next year!"

I think movie stars are vastly overpaid, too, and I rarely watch a movie that isn't on television.

And, last I checked, no one asked for any of my tax dollars to fund a movie, pay a celebrity, or build a theater.

When I have to pay extra sales tax to put money in Steven Speilberg's pocket, I will complain about that, too.

I don't like the National Endowment for the Arts, but that fund is miniscule compared to the cost of constructing a sports venue.

And, yes I am paid by tax dollars. But, every officer of the same rank and seniority is paid the same. We don't have any "superstar" police that are paid many times what their colleagues earn because they make more arrests.

    The analogies aren't working.

I remember when I first heard about these PSL's had to be in the late 80's ( i'm guessing) I had to laugh, and cry because I knew that I had seen my last pro game in person. where I used to go 2-3 times a year I now never, and would never, even if I won free tickete see another pro game of any sport.

Don't forget about the use of eminent domain to take people's houses to build a frickin' sports stadium! Now, that is a freakin' crock!

    http://durangotexas.com/eyesontexas/arlington/dallascowboystadium/dallascowboystadiumarlington.htm

    Dallas Cowboy Stadium in Arlington

Hurricane Level Destruction Strikes D/FW Metroplex

On March 28, 2000 a Tornado struck a damaging blow to Fort Worth, Texas, destroying homes, skyscrapers, churches and businesses. Five and 1/2 years later, on September 24, 2005, Hurricane Rita struck the Gulf Coast of Texas, homes were lost, much damage occurred, many Texans left homeless refugees. In 2006, in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex city of Arlington, Hurricane/Tornado scale manmade damage erupted, disrupting hundreds, if not thousands, of lives, destroying 104 homes of an estimated 312 residents, forcing the evacuation of an estimated 871 residents from several destroyed apartment complexes, obliterating 32 businesses, everything from restaurants to tire stores to banks to motels. This was an easily preventable unnatural disaster, yet it was allowed to occur, even sanctioned and paid for by the citizens of Arlington, some of whom may have even voted to pay for their own destruction.

And for what has all this destruction occurred? A school? A new highway? A hospital? An airport? A military base? No, an untold number of lives have been direly disrupted for a new football stadium for what the locals call America's Team (click to read a blog blurb about America's Team), that being the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League. Yes, a sports palace, a private for profit business is being built on a graveyard of personal destruction the likes of which, had Mother Nature wreaked such havoc, the President would have declared it a Federal Disaster Area with FEMA incompetently administering aid to all the victims. But, since this is a manmade disaster, the aid to the victims has been meager, $5000 for apartment dwellers, fair market value plus a bit extra to cover moving expenses for home owners. Businesses were left to flounder, all the destruction scaring customers away while the businesses struggled to stay open, trying to find out when the bulldozers would be coming for them, with much frustration directed at those in charge for their inept execution of the ill-conceived project. Many will never be able to recover. Unless some clever lawyer decides to make this outrageous violation of basic rights and decency and eminent domain abuse into some sort of cause celebre.*

What follows is photo documentation of what may be the most outrageous abuse of the principle of eminent domain to ever have occurred in America.

Eminent domain sucks. It is just a way for the big guy to steal from the little guy.

Wanna talk about a "free market economy?" In a free market economy, if you want to buy something I have, and I don't want to sell it, I don't have to. Or, if I do, it is the price I say, not what you say it's worth. Under iminent domain, some little old lady gets forced out of the home she lived in for 50 years, and isn't paid enough to replace it. Then she has to move to an apartment or another neighborhood where she doesn't know anyone.

Say, Matty, where do the displaced and dispossessed little people fit into your "free market economy?" Nursing home? Homeless shelter maybe? Forced to move in with relatives? For what? So Jones can make another billion?

There was a time in my life that I would have disagreed with you on this David, but not anymore. Today I have done a 180 on this issue and strongly side with your estimation. However, even if such were the case, I am convinced that ownership would be taking the public, sporting or not, to the cleaners.

I also do not appreciate supporting individual athletes who do not have enough respect for their country to even place their hand/hat over their heart to show proper respect for our culture when the national anthem/pledge of allegiance is being conducted. My disgust toward these people is greatly enhanced, especially so, when our military personnel are being killed and wounded as they are today to protect and preserve our freedom and the American way of life.

Oh, the humanity!! And all put down so eloquently by Freelance writer Laurie Barker James! Not exactly the Wall Street Journal...

Yeah, I heard it was horrible! I saw the poor displaced old retired people sleeping in boxes, rolling around the streets in their wheelchairs, and breaking into meters to get enough change for their blood pressure medicine! Fact is people were paid, in some cases millions of dollars to give up the property without a legal battle. I should be so lucky...

You guys are flat silly and really ought to read a book before turning on your soap opera machine. At least do some research. THE VOTERS AGREED WITH THE PROPOSED STADIUM FOR THE ECONOMIC MODEL IT PRESENTED TO THE AREA!

Will Rogers once said, "Everyone's ignorant, just on different subjects."

So, every dispossessed person was happy with his/her situation and settlement? Every one?

That is not "FREE MARKET!" That is tyranny.

Voters approved? So if the voters say so, most of whom are NOT going to be affected, Granny can be put on the street and her home bulldozed to make ONE MAN more money? That's obscene. The only votes that matter here are the ones cast by the property owners.

How about if it were your home? Some piss-ant politician/appointee comes by and tells you that you have X days to vacate, and hands you a check for way less than you would sell for, since you didn't want to sell anyway, and that is supposed to be "free market?" Not in the country I grew up in, it's not.

It isn't a matter of not liking the Cowboys. It is a matter of what's right and what's not. Taking property from someone who has lawful right to it, and who doesn't want to give it up is not right.

The So. FL taxpayers were hosed w/paying for the American Airlines Arena (home of the Miami Heat)...costs big bucks on prime water front property.

Dolphin Stadium, on the other hand, was bought, built and paid for by the late, great Joe Robbie (the Fins original owner)...didn't cost the taxpayers' a red cent.

As for the Cowboys, well since I don't live there, I have no dog in that fight.

I'm sure the economy will benefit from the new stadium...
heck, Mateo's bar tab alone will fund a small city.[:D]

Yes, I hear the cowboy haters whining all day...especially when we start winning.

Keep swinging NUNN, see ya still haven't done your research. The very article that got you ladies sobbing (Freelance writer Laurie Barker James?) says that several land owners were paid millions, well over the value of the property. Others, who were in apartments, were paid $5000 plus moving expenses.

Don't like the vote? Believe it's unfair? Then stand up for the downtrodden and refuse to pay the additional tax and fight it out with the big bad boys and effect change and save the old folks from the home! What's right is right!

    That's what I thought.

I will admit, however, no one knows tyranny like a cop...

OMG, you are a are you complete fool and know nothing about pro football?......Dallas has been down for 12 years and still mathmatically the most succesful team in the NFL since the SB started, do you have any idea what teams go through trying to replace 3 hall HOF players at 3 vital positions at the end of their career? Do you have any idea how hard it is to replace the players lost due to the salary cap because other teams are willing to overpay for your SB winning players? Do you have any idea how long the packers went between SB wins? try about 30 years, how about the steelers? try about 25 years.
