Pics of my newest project.
Well with the price of ammo going up and up and UP [V] I thought I would build something cheep to shoot and fairly unique. I decided to do a 10/22 pistol. Well I finally got all the parts together and started on it this afternoon.
I used and old stock (free) I got from buddy that someone had choped the back off. I took one of my beat up BBLs and gave it a cut down to 8" but I think I am going to cut it back to somewhere between 5" and 6" to make it look bette with my suppressor on it. I am going to get some kind of longer AR flash hider to keep on there when my suppressor is not on it.
I am going to build some kind of stock that has a more natural grip, most likely something kinda like the one on my under folder I built (that is still not done [:p]).
Once all that is done I am going to do some kind of refinish on the whole gun to make it look real nice.
Keep in mind I just did a little chopping to get it together for now. I will be getting the BBL crowned and threaded in the next couple weeks. The stock will take a bit longer since I will have to wait until my new gun room is built and I have the rest of my tools.

Here is the under folder I refered to:

Nwcid Knows the laws and wouldn't make an illegal firearm without the proper documentation to make it legal. 0 -
Well last time I checked it was not illegal. If you read the post it states reads "I thought I would BUILD...". Notice it does not say "cut down". My PISTOL is no more illegal then any other legaly owned or built pistol.
I am not going to hide a LEGAL firearm. You need to check your facts.0 -

I knew someone would get it. Thanks MVP [^].0 -
What makes my gun ILLEGAL? Why is my pistol wrong and yours are not? 0 -
Although I haven't a clue about the actual laws, it:
Certainly looks illegal, and with "cut down stock", and "cut down barrel"
it even sounds somewhat illegal.
Editted to add: crazy that it would be illegal, and looks like it
would be a blast to shoot.[:)][:)]0 -
OK...I am not a legal expert on the laws, but I was under the impression that if the receiver was manufactured originally as a part of a rifle, then it was always a rifle.
I didnt think just cutting the stock down and cutting the barrel down made it a pistol...I thought it made it a short barrel rifle. Otherwise putting a pistol grip on a single shot shotgun and cutting the barrel down would be just as legal would it not?0 -
My guess would be it is built on a new receiver from Ruger sold and logged as a pistol receiver.
I do want to know for sure how it was done though.0 -
if the receiver came from a rifle,,you now have a cut down illegal rifle,,,just because you cut it down does not make it a pistol in the eyes of the law,,,if the receiver is new then it had to logged into your FFL's book where you bought it as a pistol..if it were me I would not take the chance,,remove the barrel and stock and chunk them,,,, 0 -
Well as I was posting my latest response someone got it, well or close.
MVP you are a winner, but good luck getting a Ruger reciever [V].
I bought a virgin reciever (from Brownells) and not that you need to but for good measure I did fill out the pistol form along with the 4473 just so that there can be even less confusion.
It is sad to think that even as gun owners we assume something is illegal based on Looks alone [V]. That is one of the things we hate about the gun grabers, that they make laws based on Looks of firearms.
There were many things in my posts that should have given it away. I never said I cut my rifle down or that there was even a rifle involved. I said I finally got all the parts together, and rifles usually have all the part with them. I also said I decided to build a "10/22 pistol".
Now the good news is you guys came up with some great links and good thoughts. I really like that PDF from the ATF.0 -

Well why dont you got "chunk" your legal 10/22 rifle, I wouldn't take a chance it might go full auto. I am not planing on taking my LEGAL reciver that I paid good money for and getting rid of it.
My statement makes as much sense as yours does.0 -

well first off you need to learn to how to read,,no where did I say get rid of you receiver,,I said I would not take the chance and would get rid of the barrel and stock ,,,If you want to play tag with the feds while your trying to prove it was logged as a pistol,,,means nothing to me0 -
What is really important here is not whether it is legal or not but whether it is fugly or not!!!
I vote "Fugly"0 -
I agree that is it FUGLY right now, but that will change as it gets finished.
As far as not "risking it" I am not risking anything more then any other LEGAL gun owner. The only thing that makes this gun any different then any other pistol is that they are not common. If they were more common there would have been no question about legality. When was the last time you saw an AR pistol and said "dont you know that is illegal"? How about an AK pistol or an HK pistol? Oh I know what about the target pistols made from bolt action recievers like the Remington 700 action?
How will all Legal gun owners survive if we cant agree? I feel like I am being Zumobed here.0 -
Is that a Pistol Stamp On the receiver[:D]
I too think a pistol grip like the one on your underfolder rifle would improve it quite a bit.0 -
Hey wouldn't it be great if this board had people who could enjoy the pics and IF they felt he was doing something wrong PRIVATELY Email him? Rather then screamin out to the world what an idiot he might be for producing an illegal gun. 0 -
...looks good to me. A little tweeking here and there...and the fugly goes away...pics when finished?...[;)]

It is a "pistol" stamp, but that will not prove legality. I had the dealer do that after is was papered as such just to help with any issues.
Like I said the stock was free and is VERY temporay.0 -
One other suggestion.
I know it is your build but what do you think about adding cooling fins on the barrel by the chamber like a Thompson Machinegun had while it is at the Lathe getting crown and threads?[8D]0 -

That could be cool. BBLs are cheep so I can make more then one. That might be an issue though since I will still have 4 other LEGAL 10/22 RIFLES. But if I have them assembled with standard BBLs it should be ok. I will have to look into the legalitly of that one.0 -

Agree!!!!0 -
can't wait to see the finished product!!! 0 -
i think you may be on to something by making a 10/22 pistol, but i have to say in the defence of they nay sayers on legality at first, most post containing such projects ARE just "customized", and not built like you are doing, i think they where just trying to help, but i also think you really knew the response you would receive when you posted this, possible even when you conceived the project, i would really like to see it when it is complete 0 -
Let us know if you have to alter the recoil spring to get the gun to
operate properly with the shorter barrel.0 -
POS.....waste of money...but it's your money....[V] 0 -
I have to admit that I think 10/22's are among the homeliest of rifles and being made into a pistol does not help in my opinion. That said I do own a 10/22, and figure to each his own. Have fun with it, that is the main thing. 0 -
You could have just bought one of these and saved yourself the trouble.

I do like the look of the stock though. I wonder if Boyd's sells the ones for the pistol. I know they do for the rifle.0 -

Thanks for explaining how it is legal. I figured it was but didn't know if it would be legal for most of us unwashed masses.
Looks like an awesome project to me Let us know how it shoots. More pix when it's done and let us know how it shoots.
By the way, it might be fugly right now, but I kind of look that 'hell i just threw it together' look. Kind of like the stealth muscle car.0
