US Postal Service Shuts Down
I was a bit miffed (disappointed) to hear that the USPS decided to close on Tuesday in honor of former President Ford's funeral service. Not that Mr. Ford is not entitled to the respect - he most certainly is - but for a vital service like the USPS to decide to shut down a second consecutive day on top of a Sunday (3 days with no mail delivery) will no doubt create a lot of problems for businesses and individuals who are relying upon timely mail service and delivery. This is compounded by the Christmas overload and the calendar year's end.
I suspect that there will be some financial and legal ramnifications for quite a few people who get caught up on the bubble, including monetary fines.
Again, not saying that it would not be a nice gesture for a President who has passed on, but we live in a day and age where mail service is an integral part of our lives and legal and financial welfare.
And no, I'm not suggesting that on-line purchases, auctions, catalogs, junk mail, etc. cannot wait another day or two. I'm specifically talking about legal and binding documents, checks, payments, etc. that people are depending upon.
Your thoughts?

I'm all for it!
I think a former President desererves any and all respect we can give him upon his passing.
I would say the same for Clinton who I personally feel was one of the worst Presidents we have had. The fact is he was still a President.
I truely hope more than the post office closes. I wish most companies would close in respect for a former President!0 -

I worked 30 years for the feds as a civilian and I believe this is the first time in history that two consecutive federal holidays have occurred back to back. A lot of work will pile up for some agencies, especially after a weekend.......[:)][:)]

I was pissed to find that the DMV closed friday Dec. 22 at noon, since when is 3 days before Christmas a holiday? Screw you DMV. 0 -
FWIW, I have no issue with showing former President Ford respect and closing the Post Office in his honor but perhaps the USPS could have designated another day later in the week or possibly next week to shut down in observance under these unusual circumstances.
The first day or so of each month sees the delivery of rent checks, mortgage payments, Social Security checks, etc. and many people live off of them on a day-to-day basis. Two consecutive holidays may prove to be a hardship for a lot of folks.
Me personally, I'm unaffected. I can wait for any checks due me, Omaha Steaks offers, Williams-Sonoma catalog, The Sportsmans Guide sales brochures, etc.0 -

There is nothing wrong with showing respect for President Ford but business is business. I also doubt that the Postal work force will be staying home Tuesday without pay! 0 -

giving government employees a day away from work to honor a respected person't death can be a sign of respect and maybe even a chance for the employees to attend a memorial service.
However, I don't think the hardworking taxpayers, most of whom do not get that day off, should have to foot the cost of that day off by the goverment employees getting a full day's pay for being off. Especially when a large number of those off work employees know little and care less about there being any "respect" being displayed.

I would not lose any sleep over a national holiday for 1 day to morn the loss of any former president, including Clinton who in my opinion was one of the worst this country ever had!0 -

IMO, having scheduled USPS holiday closings each year is not the actual issue here, even if you disagree with the particular holiday or what/who it commemorates. Businesses and individuals have advance notice as well as the opportunity to plan around these scheduled and announced closings. 0 -

Is this a precedent for a President?
I don't recall Feds closing up because of the death of a President before? What does their extra day off have to do with showing respect? Shouldn't we all take the day off if that's the case?0 -
I have no problem with showing respect, but I think shutting down fed offices is a bit much. 99% will not be showing respect... they wont even think about him on Tuesday. This holiday will end up costing alot. 0 -

King was well known to hire white hookers and beat them, sometimes severe enoough to end them in the hospital. A preacher who'd do something like that and then get up in front of people and decry the sins of others.
