So I accepted my first job offer, and will be moving to Sacramento.
I found an affordable apartment 2 miles from where I will be working($750/month for a single), and they won't let me live there.... my income is too high they say.
I'm broke and just got an entry level job requiring no previous experience (aside from a college degree), and I'm going to be making too much money??? WTH.
Oh well its probably best.... the neighborhood was probably full of crime and full of illegal immigrants packing multiple familes in a single apartment.
Maybe they did me a favor..... but they'd do me even more of a favor if they opened it up to the entire market. That way housing I'm eligible becomes cheaper, and we price the illegals out.....
Either way... this sucks and I'm going to continue my search for a place to live.

You might want to count it as a blessing you didn't get it in the over all grand scheme of things..
If you have a job that you go to everyday and your neighbors don't, you won't need a place to keep your stuff because your neighbors will be doing that for you.0 -

There aren't many biotechnology jobs out of state, I can't get the same type of job out of state, I need to take this one, at least until I have enough experience.
It was on the edge of town, close to work, rent was acceptable ($725), it all sounded good, until I found out it was low income.
Apparently... in order to get in, I'd need to take in some roommates making nothing/almost nothing such that the per capita income was below a certain spot- so now I'm looking at places at least 10 miles away, instead of 2.0 -

I guarantee -- you don't want to live there, especially in a state like CA. Check craigslist for shared rentals, you might score a great place and make some friends. It's a gamble but if you're not packing 3 bedrooms on you -- you can always find something else. Besides, I don't know how you look but here's a search from CL: link0 -

On a side note, it seems to me that they are taking after the Veterans Administration, and those who push the Dream Act. The, "How much is your income thing" is designed to fit minority programs, and shut out the typical hard working citizen. These people need help in the way of housing, because they can't afford it or health insurance for their families, nor a college education for their children, and besides, it fits the politician's idea of a multicultural nation thing, which is why they will be attempting to push the Dream Act again in November.0 -
I was looking at jobs in Colorado, my degree isn't of much use in the clinical trials, and most want a few years experience.
I have been looking in Colorado, but nothing worked out.
There was one job I really wanted because I could have lived with my uncle in Colorado and gotten free rent.
My current plan is to just take what I can get (and it pays decent) to gain experience.
But as I said in the first post, it may be for the best because I probably wouldn't want to live with "low income" neighbors.
It would probably be the worst possible place to be next time the illegals decide to protest at a state capital....
But if there was no such thing as low income housing- just a free market without artificial rent caps and salary caps, I think it would just be a better situation, at least for me.0 -

Not to hi-jack the thread, but in some cases this "degrading" is a very just and sometimes even constructive criticism. I understand you like your state, but c'mon, be realistic, coast south of Point Reyes and metros became cesspool. I just don't understand what so degrading you see when someone points out that prevailing politics and moral outright coming out of CA is traitorous to the US. Again, when people in CA are ready to stand up and push back, which hasn't happened when a chance to redistrict the state was given (check the numbers on how many people turned up to vote for that one), I think the opinion of majority of Americans will change too.0 -

oh believe me, I've seen pretty much everything except Death Valley in CA (including a sewer line break at Linda Mar beach while I and a couple of other unfortunate schmucks were catching waves
). I am all up for putting up a fight especially for a place like CA but at this point I don't think how it can be conducted. Anyways, looks like we're hi-jacking this. I'd be happy to talk it over next time I am in CA, no weddings to go next time, just to visit and relax 0 -

What do I do? I'm a Research Associate for a biotech company that uses transgenic rice to express proteins with desirable properties.
One strain in particular expresses a human protein found in breast milk that boosts infant immune systems- this will help close the gap between "baby formula" and "real breast milk".
I will be doing a combination of standard molecular biology procedures to assist the PhDs in developing new products, as well as researching background material and preparing reports to assist their lawyers and PhDs in writing patent application or Grant applications.
Jim- This state does not completely suck, its government is pretty bad.
This is a gun forum, and California with respect to its gun laws, sucks. So that explains my handle.
The actual geographic area, California, is awesome. The economy is pretty good (but was better before all the tech jobs were outsourced overseas). I like the states general views on the environment, commitment to funding scientific research, and the war.
I don't like the states general apathy towards enforcing immigration laws, apathy towards the 2nd, extensive spending on programs used mainly by illegal immigrants, and tax structure that is out to destroy the middle class.
Now on a more personal level, my college education was paid for by my parents, not the state. I didn't receive any minority scholarships (even though us white people are a minority). I didn't receive any govt subsidized low interest loans. Any govt subsidy of the university, my part was funded by my parents who had to pay proportionately more than most of the students there (in state tuition to illegals, WTH!?!), and alot more in terms of raw money paid in taxes.
So I don't perceive that I am indebted to the state in any way (I am indebted to my parents a whole lot, not the state).
Now all I wanted to do was live close to work so I wouldn't use so much gas (help the environment) and wouldn't spend so much time stuck in the morning commute (so I place less stress on the traffic grid, which helps reduce city expenses).
But apparently thats too much to ask because I'll be earning a little too much money.
Not to mention any such place concentrates poverty, and in general when you concentrate poverty you increase the crime rate.
California does not completely suck, and I don't mean to imply that it does, but there are some specific areas where it sure does suck.0 -

One other reason why Calfornia sucks. I bought my 2700 square foot home for $125,000. Try finding a cardboard box for less then $300,000 in California. [:D]0 -
