Empire State Building to go green for Muslim holiday
New York's iconic Empire State Building is to be lit up green from Friday in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid, the biggest festival in the Muslim calendar marking the end of Ramadan, officials said.
"This is the first time that the Empire State Building will be illuminated for Eid, and the lighting will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hannukah," according to a statement.
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month, is expected to be celebrated in New York from Friday, depending on when the new moon is sighted, and the city's tallest skyscraper will remain green until Sunday.
Built in the early 1930s, the 443-meter-tall (1,454-feet-tall) Empire State Building was first lit up with colored lighting in 1976, when red, white and blue lights were used to mark the American Bicentennial.
An estimated seven million Muslims live in the United States.

The Empire State Building is aglow in green this weekend to honor the Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.
The 102-story building routinely lights up its famous spire to honor everything from traditional holidays to sporting events to notable charities to "the myriad ethnic groups living in the New York City area," according to the building's website.
But Thursday night marked the first time the all-green lighting was used to mark the kickoff of Eid-al-Fitr, a three-day celebration for Muslims around the world.
The all-green lighting was used earlier in the week to promote the city's Parks Department.
Not many religious holidays make the cut. Green and red are used every year to mark the Christmas holiday season, and blue and white -- the colors of the Israeli flag -- are used for the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
And the building doesn't fire up its thousand-watt bulbs for just anyone. The "extraordinary number of requests" cannot all be accommodated, according to a building statement. Lighting up the spire for commercial products and corporate events is out, as is the commemoration of personal events like birthdays or anniversaries.
The Empire State Building's tower was first lit up in colors in July, 1976, when red, white and blue were used in celebration of the American Bicentennial. A new lighting system that allows a wider range of colors was inaugurated the following year, when blue and white lights flashed to announce the New York Yankees had won the World Series.
Tell me, what does the color green have to do with Islam or Eid?
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration which marks the end of Ramadan. In Islam, the colour green symbolizes a happy occasion.

However, I'd put about as much faith in this as one should put in the so called "Historical African Holiday known as Kwanza" created by a criminal being passed off as a Christmas like Holiday. Typical of people and organizations like Louis Farakhan, Malcolm "X", Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and other black power and Civil Rights Movement and other scurrilously racist leaders such as those in the NAACP.

While public officials, schools, and the ACLU worked overtime this year to ban every vestige of Christmas from the public square, the recently invented holiday known as Kwanzaa is gaining in popularity among black Americans. These occurrences are not unrelated.
In an earlier time, blacks held a strong faith in God. But over the past 40 years, the black community has largely let God slip away. Sure the community has maintained the outer trappings of religion, but the solid morality at its core is nearly gone.
Enter a God-hating black racist named Ron Karenga. Born Ron Everett on a poultry farm in Maryland, Everett invented Kwanzaa in 1966, based on an African harvest festival (though it takes place during the Winter Solstice!), and celebrating the first Kwanzaa with his family and friends.
Calling himself "Maulana" (Swahili for "Master Teacher"), Karenga became a black nationalist at UCLA, and formed his group, the United Slaves (US) for the purpose of igniting a "cultural revolution" among American blacks. US members followed Karenga's "Path of Blackness," which is detailed in his Quotable Karenga: "The sevenfold path of blackness is think black, talk black, act black, create black, buy black, vote black, and live black."0 -
