Empire State Building to go green for Muslim holiday
New York's iconic Empire State Building is to be lit up green from Friday in honor of the Muslim holiday of Eid, the biggest festival in the Muslim calendar marking the end of Ramadan, officials said.
"This is the first time that the Empire State Building will be illuminated for Eid, and the lighting will become an annual event in the same tradition of the yearly lightings for Christmas and Hannukah," according to a statement.
Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month, is expected to be celebrated in New York from Friday, depending on when the new moon is sighted, and the city's tallest skyscraper will remain green until Sunday.
Built in the early 1930s, the 443-meter-tall (1,454-feet-tall) Empire State Building was first lit up with colored lighting in 1976, when red, white and blue lights were used to mark the American Bicentennial.
An estimated seven million Muslims live in the United States.

I celebrated Ramadan by eating pork chops for dinner last night. Before sunset. Did you know they fast during daylight hours during Ramadan? So right before sunset would be a good time to pick a fight with one of them, when he's hungry, and weak, and thinking about food. 0 -

I teach sixth grade at a public school and right before the Christmas holiday we teach them sex ed. Now, at the sixth grade level sex ed consists of you need to take a shower everyday, the boys parts, the girls parts, you need to take a shower everyday, how a baby is made, don't have sex until you're married, and you need to take a shower everyday. We are absolutely not allowed to discuss abortion, birth control, mastrubation, or homosexuality. All in all, it's all rather bland.
Four years ago we had one opt out, a preacher's kid. Three years ago we had three opt outs. Two years ago we had seven. Last year we had nine. Last year--and the percentage holds for the previous years--8 of the 9 opt outs are Muslim kids. In fact, we had NO Muslim kids who took the course. In fact, some of the Muslims are trying to get the program abolished.

The Empire State Building is aglow in green this weekend to honor the Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan.
The 102-story building routinely lights up its famous spire to honor everything from traditional holidays to sporting events to notable charities to "the myriad ethnic groups living in the New York City area," according to the building's website.
But Thursday night marked the first time the all-green lighting was used to mark the kickoff of Eid-al-Fitr, a three-day celebration for Muslims around the world.
The all-green lighting was used earlier in the week to promote the city's Parks Department.
Not many religious holidays make the cut. Green and red are used every year to mark the Christmas holiday season, and blue and white -- the colors of the Israeli flag -- are used for the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.
And the building doesn't fire up its thousand-watt bulbs for just anyone. The "extraordinary number of requests" cannot all be accommodated, according to a building statement. Lighting up the spire for commercial products and corporate events is out, as is the commemoration of personal events like birthdays or anniversaries.
The Empire State Building's tower was first lit up in colors in July, 1976, when red, white and blue were used in celebration of the American Bicentennial.
