is it wrong to be a proud white male
excatly as the question asks..i ask this because when people look at me most of the time thier first thought is that i am a redneck or some kind of KKK member...it just boggels my mind because when you think about it when someones speaks of themselves being proud their black or that thier proud to be hispanic, i would almost gaurntee you that you would not think that they were some kind of black panther or brown pride member...so why then is it when i speak of being proud of my race i am automatically thrown into the class of white power...i dont know really i am just bored an wanna see what the posts say about this..

What variety of white are you proud to be? Lots of folks are proud to be Irish, Italian, French, not so much German, but they're around, too.
Saying you're proud to just be white is a heck of a vague statement.
Blacks tend to perceive their collective history as homogenized (eventhough nothing could be further from the truth), so when they say they are proud to be black, they are often referring to the erroneous notion of a shared history within the United States. It's an uninformed statement and vague as well.
Brown pride just confounds me. Most "brown" countries are corrupt, poor, uneducated, and riven with social strife. There's not much to be proud of except the food.
Now as far as is it wrong to be proud to be a white male? Dunno. What about being white and male makes you proud and what have you done to add to that heritage?0 -
what i have done for my heritage is to become educated...as for what does it matter in terms of when i say it i am automatically put into a class of people that i am not...but for specifics im mostly norweigen an to that viking blood flows threw my veins... 0 -

Getting an education and being a productive membe of society is quite enough to be proud of. Not sure if being a white male had anything to do with your achievements, but that's a topic for another thread (affirmative action, blah, blah, blah).

Typically, white folk who claim pride in their race are racists. I'm not saying you're a racist, I'm just saying that's the norm. So by claiming to be proud of your race you are (whether you mean to or not) tapping into the discourse of racism. Maybe that's unfair.
I think the 'proud of my race' statements from nonwhites arose largely as a response to the sentiment that those other races were inferior. Check my tag-line at the end of this post: I'm a geek, and I'm proud of it. What I'm saying there, is that I don't care what you think of my proclivities; I am what you claim, and I'm proud of what I am. I think it's similar with the "I'm proud of my [insert racial descriptor here] heritage." I think they're saying: "yes, I'm black, and I can be proud of that."
On the other hand, it's entirely socially acceptable to be proud to be a Husker, proud to be a Minnesotan, or proud to be a Brit (three identities that are largely white). Maybe the difference is that white folks, as a whole, don't have much of a common experience. Black, brown and yellow folks do have the common experience of oppression, so they can build unity through that. White folks as a whole have nothing on which to build unity (correct me if I"m wrong here), but Huskers, Minnesotans or Brits maybe do--[edit]--or Vikings!.
I have no problem with a person proud of being white. But if you think you'll ever escape the assumption that you're racist by claiming your white pride, I think you're mistaken.

(non-white) folks can be proud of being (their color), but white folks aren't allowed to be proud of being white. it didn't always used to be that way, that's the result of social engineering.
what is social engineering? the changing of society (herd of sheep) by those who have been unknowingly given the power to do so (media, politicians, large corporations).
why do they do it? consider this technique: a lawyer, when considering members of a jury, does not like people who are smart. he wants stupid people. because they will ignore the facts, so his mistakes will be overlooked, and rely mostly on an emotional argument. both sides do that, defense and prosecution. SO, when the powers-that-be rely on propganda, which relies most substantially on an appeal to emotion
(that's classic propaganda, read up on soviet, nazi, modern american political, any of it)
what kind of audience do you think they want?? they don't want smart people. or even stupid people who think for themselves. they want sheep.
so, when given the power to manipulate the masses, what would they prefer? sheep. just like a lawyer choosing his jury.
is that not what you see being done?
necessary to that "sheep" viewpoint is a liberal victimist philosophy. if they could think for themselves, they wouldn't be sheep, and therefore not victims in need of protection by the flock. so, when manipulated into a sheep mentality, they also need to beleive they are a victim of some sort.
so, when you run across someone who says "there's something wrong with you because you're proud of being white. I, on the other hand, am proud of my color ...one of the victims" you know where that comes from. someone who has been successfully brainwashed. and most all of them have.
summary: it's not your fault. go ahead and be proud of what you are. screw 'em, you're not a sheep, and don't feel guilty about it.
...and the SAME thing applies to your owning a gun (whatever color you are). exactly the same.

Proud to be white? Not me. I didn't have anything to do with being born white. Proud to be Irish? Proud isn't the word, but I enjoy the Celtic culture and history.
My wife is mostly Italian, but we don't celebrate being Italian.
Our godson is black. I don't reckon he will be proud to be black, again, something out of his control. He should be proud of his accomplishments rather than his color.0 -

Aside from this rather strange statement, being proud of one's race is fine. The problem today seems to be that if you are white and proud, that is not viewed favorably by todays society if you say, or do anything about it.0 -

I think you have to wait until your race is completely trashed and neglected even abused and then have a large number of people get together and say....ENOUGH!!! Then you have to push past all of the hateful neglect your race has endured to be give "special concideration" where you get to build casinos and make a fortune off of society or set up college funds for only people of your color. It helps if you have a religious spokes-person that can speak in a way that you cannot understand what the heck they are saying but you can't say anything because you are mezmerized by the outlandish way they look (now that Tammy Faye has passed away I think we missed our chance.) 0 -

I make sure that everybody I interact with knows all of this, it immediately winnows the few that I might like from the huge number of haters. Then I have more time to be really friendly with those who are left, those who are independent thinkers.
