ACT Test Scores?
I am originally from the east coast area and when someone takes a test for college they take the SAT, or college boards as we called them in the day. A GOOD score was 1200 or 1300 up to a possible 1600.
Here in the midwest the test of choice is the ACT. A co worker was very happy that his child got a 31. What am I missing here? Is this a good score. How high does it go?

31 is pretty high, the max is 36. If I remember right a 25 and above will get you into about any college. My daughter got a 26 and we were thrilled. 0 -
That is a good score. I have known a few kids that have scored 34 and 35. My son was one of them. 
Got some great scholarships.
Most high school kids don't break 30 so a 31 is a real good score.0 -

National average is around 21, so 31 would be in the 90th plus percentile. 0 -
yeah, i remember the ACTs. i got a 32. one of my friends took it and got a 30...she wasn't happy with that so she took classes, and studied and paid out about $800 bucks for a tutor and the classes and all. she took the test 4 times. each time with a lower score. test anxiety or something. 0 -
I went straight from my senior prom to the testing site the next morning, and needless to say, wasn't in the best shape to take a test! But like all my high school endeavors, I had scheduled the test for the very last day they offered it in my area. No chance for a retest. I scored a 30, and was more than pleased! I guess I just test best hung-over and dressed in a wrinkled, rental tuxedo. [:o)] 0 -
There must be a lot of smart people on here. Through the years I have heard very few people breaking 30 and on here everybody tops that. I would say the national average is not even a 20 and a lot of smart people who did well in school don't top a 20. The place I work one of the smartest kids I have ever been around only scored a 29 and he taught the teachers in class. 0 -

I call bullship on all these 30+ scores...30 will get you a full paid scholarship to almost any public university. I only personally know one person that got over a 30, my first cousin-who got a 33. He was valedictorian of his class, got a full 4 year scholarship, then graduated Suma Cum Laude. 30+ in my best guess would be the 98th percentile (or higher). I went to college with lots of incredibly intelligent people, most graduating UA with honors and all in the below 30 group...
Sorry, just dont believe it.
Let's follow up with IQ test results, I guess everyone is 170+???

Didn't say I was smart. Heck, I was hung over as heck when I got to the test center, and just guessed very well on most of them!!!! But then again, back in the 70's and 80's, school was more "real school" than it is now. Maybe we just learned more.0 -

I scored a 23 overall, my wife got a 27, sisters 23 and 26 or 27. I know only a handfull of people that have got a 30 or higher. The SAT has now changed as of 2 years ago and now is composed of two parts that I think are 1200 or 1000 points something like that.0 -

Ha. I remember having my dad who was an instrumentation technician(he's now a lead Engineer at Eli Lilly) help me with some of my Calculus homework. He was amazed that they were teaching kids in highschool Calculus and Trig. He said he never learned most of that stuff until his last year of college.
Never took the ACT, scored a 1380 on the SAT. Started studying Archtecture in college, took a semester off to get married, and never went back. I found a fantastic job with great pay, my parents still give me a hard time about it.0 -
I got a 28 when I took it in 1989. I went to the Air Force right after HS and when I got out and went to college they didn't care about the score as I was a "non-traditional" student.
So the 28 didn't mean a whole lot; but what the heck it's paid for!0 -

Growing up in PA, I had never even heard of the ACT until I started for my BA degree. But by then it did not matter for me. I did take the SAT after the Army, but found out the schools did not require it since I was considered an adult learner by then.0 -
Thanks PC, I grew up in PA too. SAT was the test of choice for Eastern schools. I too had never heard of the ACT and wondered why a person could possibly be happy with a 31. ( I was thinking the top score might be 100!)[:0] I got 1390 0n my boards. Now, That would be bad as it is possible to get 2400 instesd of 1600 because they have added an 800 pt. writing section. 0 -
I scored a 28 back in '93, but still couldn't get into Texas A&M... where I had wanted to go to college since 3rd grade [:(] 0 -
my cousin Steven took both the ACT and the SAT. his scores: ACT - 36 (he took it twice and got 36 both times). SAT - 1600. he didn't take it twice. 0 -

36 is higest. Average is around 23-24 range. Anything about 28 your doing pretty good. 0 -
I scored a 28 on the ACT and a 1310 on the SAT and I received an appointment to West Point and a full-ride to Iowa State University on an Air Force ROTC scholarship. A 31 is an incredibly good score. There's definitely good schools and good scholarships out there for someone scoring in that range unless the school requires a SAT instead. 0 -
In the SATs a 30 is not necessarily a 30. What I mean is that one year a 30 will get you full scholarships the next year it may not.They take the top ?? percentage of those that test. The bottom score may vary from year to year. The spring of 2005 a 31 would get you full scholarship in 2006 it was 32. My son missed by one point. 0 -
Never took the ACT....I took the SAT (before I got out of the Marines, four years after I graduated H.S) and got an 1140 0 -
Well, believe it or not, I made a 29 on the ACT the first time I took it, between my sophomore and junior years in high school. Bought a book to study from after I graduated and made a 35. Never took the SAT. 0 -
My son just took the test as a high school freshman and got a 22, which is good enough for TOPS money in Louisiana. My niece got a 30 and never paid a penny for her college education.

Not bullship -- scholarship. My son did get a 34 and did get a full ride to the U + with another great sholarship from the demon WalMart due to his score, he made money going to college.
But I must add. He is a mutant.[:D]0 -
I think many of us with children suffer from grade creep...as more years pass we become smarter and smarter than we really were. We realize that our children will realize that we really were average and no parent wants to be thought of as average thus the grade or IQ creep. That 18 on the ACT becomes a 31 over the fifteen years you've been out of college....that really outstanding 28 becomes a 33 as you realize your own kid is really smart but you don't want to be a moron in his eyes.
Listening to some of you I wondered if I had wandered into a MENSA bragging site instead of my beloved GB. I've been teaching at a public high school for the last 12 years. We graduate about 225-240 students per year. During that entire time we have had no more than a total of 9 students obtain an ACT score above 30. Now my high school ranks about on the 60th percentile for high schools in Michigan, which means 40% scored higher and 60% scored lower. That makes my school pretty close to the fleet average....you guys must all be a lot smarter than the 2200+ students who graduated from my school over the last 11 years. For the many of you who scored such incredible scores my heartiest congratulations......[;)][;)][;)] but I think I see Maggies Drawers waving franticly in the pits.[:D].Beach
Incidently the SAT's are more popular on the Coasts both East and Left....the ACT's tend to dominate in the MidWest.

I applied in 97' after 4 years in the Army, and still no luck, even after being on the Dean's list at Houston Comunity College, the only thing I can think of is they didn't like my essay or major, (political science).0
