Multible gun hunting question??
I have hunted for 43 years and never had a failure on a firearm during hunting..How many have had a gun break or malfunction to the point of not working while hunting? If a failure what type of gun was it?

But my main rifle has no open sights, if I were to drop it,I would be done, and here in MI I have seen some pretty slippery walks, did you ever try walking up a hilly iced over dirt road? one wrong slip and fall and your scope is off and your done. (I have been lucky a couple times[;)])

Two years ago, a pin off my bolt broke and the action was jammed - cannot cycle a round ... but had plenty of time to get my back up in my truck to harvest a nice muley doe. 0 -
I hunteed on an island in Alaska one year and then later hunted my home state.
For some reason after the wet hunt in Alaska I and while on a hunt in my local hunting area my Remington 700 would not fire.
Fault was a rusty fireing pin that was slowed enough it wouldn't ignite the primer.0 -

Yes, but why?
When I can keep a back up rifle in camp, and it is a good excuse to the wife for buying and setting up another deer rifle.[:D][;)]
(my back-up all have open sights & see through mounts)

Twice. One was a loose scope mount, the other was a frozen pellet gun I was using to hunt rabbits.. 0 -
Winchester 100 jammed once. Fortunately didn't need it for the second shot - however, I don't think I will use it again. I will stick with bolt actions in extremely cold weather. 0 -
I had a cheap Tasco scope fail once many years ago, by completely fogging up to the point of total uselessness. No more cheap scopes for me.
Had a "Traditions" black powder percussion rifle fail once also. The lock broke to where the hammer would not lock back.
Had a Marlin 81 fail on a squirrel hunt once. A part in the feed mechanism went south and it wouldn't chamber from the magazine. Luckily, I had a spare in the truck. A Savage 23a.0 -
I split a stock on an H&R Model 300 .308 Bolt Action. I sent it back to H&R and they put a much nicer stock on it. It was worth the trouble. 0 -
I was hunting up in Alaska (lived there at the time), and used a 300 Weatherby Mark V. I was out in the "bush" hunting moose, had been walking around carrying my weapon in my right hand most the time. I pulled my hand away and the floor plate, follower spring, and follower comes out of the magazine and goes flying off into a small creek! Luckily I was able to recover all the parts, or my 4 shot rifle would have become a single shot!
Funny I was at the airport up in Anchorage about 2 months later, they have a number of fish and game stuffed and on display there. They also have a number of "hunting" pictures too, and one of them is a guy carrying a Weatherby Mark V and now I notice he has tape holding the floor plate in place! SO seems to be a common problem with the Mark V's.0 -
About 10 years ago I got up into my tree stand with my band new Remington 870 shotgun. I had been to the range to sight it in and was excited about the season. I got all settled in and as I set my 870 across my lap, I bumped the front sight on a small branch and then watched the sight drop into the tall grass below my tree stand.
Remington sent me a new front sight within a week.....0 -
My wife and I have both fallen and knocked our scopes out of alignment.[:0] Went back to camp and resighted them in. My second deer rifle was a used Remmington semi-auto that wouldn't feed reliably, got rid of it after the first hunt.[V] 0 -
I had one of those Remington semi autos in 30-06.
On one doe day, I shot a doe and a buck in two seconds. The buck was behind the doe, shot him in the neck and he dropped. The doe looked around, wondering why the buck had fallen down. That was her mistake.
I looked down, the damn Remington had jammed! Took me five minutes to clear it.
I solved that problem the next day, I went to the gun store and bought a German Mauser that was made in 30-06 at the Oberndorf works. What a beautiful gun. This bit of Kraut workmanship never jams.
Sold the Remington.0 -
If I am hunting away from home, I usually take a spare in the truck. Needed it once: the lever on my Marlin 336 jammed open while I was loading it, and in the dim early morning light I couldn't see how to unstick it. I carried a Mauser 8mm instead and waited till I got home to figure out the Marlin problem.
Couple of weeks ago I failed to take a spare on a bird hunt. My buddy's new Huglu 20 ga. sideXside started doubling. If I had carried a spare as usual, he could have used that. He used his Huglu the rest of the day as a single shot, then the next day went back to the store he bought it from and traded it in on a Remington 1100.0 -
I've never needed the backup rifle but different hunting partners have needed them twice. One broken scope and one frozen firing pin. 0 -
I usually have a couple with me. I have never needed the second gun due to a failure though. I usually have a .30-30 with open sights when we hunt the brushier areas were a quick accurate shot will be good. Then I use my scoped rifle if we are hunting where the odds of me taking 100+ yard shot is likely. 0 -
I had a Marlin 336 in .35 cal. One morning I pulled the trigger and "ping" the firing pin struck the shell but no boom. I was okay because the deer had never heard a dry fire. He just kind of looked around until I could silently work the action to get another round chambered, and that one worked. We looked at the shell and it clearly had a mark from the firing pin. Tried it again and no soap. Guess it was a dud. 0 -
I certainly have and never go hunting without packing a backup rifle in my double case.
I own a Mossberg 810 that was bought for me brand new 1972 that after taking the bolt out at camp to clean the rifle due to being caught out in a hard rain the trigger and or tang safety malfunctioned and i was not able to get the bolt back in the rifle.
Fwiw this same issue plauged some Mossberg 800's because when my late mother bought me my 810 in 30-06 she also bought my brother the 800 in .243 and his did the exact same thing a couple of years later.
His has still not been repaired after all those years.
Mine was repaired the year this happened but i have not had that rifle out in the field in years because of that very issue.
Another time i shot a buck on an icy December day and after getting up with my rifle shoulder i slipped on some ice and landed square on the Redfield 3x9 scope and shattered it.
I ow enough rifles that there really is no excuse to ruin a hunt because you did not carry that extra rifle to camp.0 -
Once while dove hunting, old Mossberg 500, the slide would jam after every shot, it made the whole trip a pain as you had to get the darn thing unstuck after every shot. 0 -
None personally, but as a gunsmith I have several brought in each fall that have failed in the field. I've seen about every type and manufacturer with a problem that makes it unusable during the 30 years i've been repairing. The majority of the problems have been owner caused. Putting them away wet and letting the insides rust, too much oil inside so that in cold a semi auto will not operate or firing pin will not strike hard enough to fire the ctg. Marlin lever actions have a bad habit of the screws loosening up, especially the loading gate screw. Which will jam the action. Extractors broken off due to rusty chambers or overloaded handloads. And a whole slew of other malfunctions. 0 -
First time in the woods I was 5 yrs old. I'll be 61 in 2 months...NEVER had a firearms malfunction.
It has ALWAYS been my practice to clean and lube each firearm after shooting/hunting. Also, I treat them all well, none have been mistaken for a hammer or some other tool.0 -

I had a lense fall out of a brand new Tasco scope. Sighted it in and then went hunting. 1st and last tasco I will buy. Had to pass on a couple od nice bucks. 0 -
I ve never had one fail but two years ago the sling on me dads eddystone broke the gun hit the ground and broke the firing pin so he had to use my model 94 in 30 30 that year good thing I had it with me 0 -

I have a mossy 800 in .243 as well, no problems with mine i love the gun. im looking for another as i shoot my rifle relatively frequently. do you think that your brother may be willing to discuss a sale of his #800?0 -
had a friends remington mod. 1100 fail to cyc. a round had to strip it down in the field but that was due to it being dirty. 0 -
My BP gun did not exactly fail ... but I did! I should have gone out and sighted it in and practiced one more time befor the deer season started! DUMB to the max! I won't do that again! 0 -
I had a Remington 870 jam up in the field with a 3" shell in it. I got it cleaed after about 10 minutes and it did it again. I had luckly brought an O/U along and finished out the day with that. I took it in when we returned and the smith fixed it. I don't remember what the cause was but I always bring an extra shotgun along. 0
