Danny DeVito: A Bad Ass?
Last week I watched the movie "Hoffa" on AMC. I never had seen this film before. This is a great movie. Jack Nicholson knocks it out of the park in the title role. The direction is great, very good screenplay, costumes etc.
One thing that didn't ring true was the role Danny DeVito had. He was an enforcer for Hoffa. He is a very good actor, but when they showed him jumping off a truck loading ramp to attack Nicholson, it looked comical, this little short fat guy trying to beat up a six foot tall man. I mean, DeVito must be about 5-3.
In another scene, a mafia restaurant owner was giving DeVito a hard time, DeVito pulled a .38 and shoved the guy all over the restaurant.
In another scene, an attorney from the Justice Dept. was searching the files at the Teamster's office, he had a federal search warrant. This guy was over six foot tall. DeVito came up and shoved the guy, and the big lawyer was knocked back about four feet. DeVito shoved him three more times, and bodily threw the big guy out of the office.
It looked like a cartoon, watching this little fat guy shove all these big guys around. I couldn't figure out why DeVito would be so miscast in an otherwise great movie.
Then, I watched the closing credits.
Directed by Danny DeVito.
