The Marine's first combat action (that I'm aware of) was attack on the British Island of New Providence. The Marines captured 2 forts, several dozen cannon and, most importantly, powder and shot which was badly needed by Washington's army0 -

You speak English because of the efforts of the Marines and all of the other armed forces in America. I don't know where you got your information, but you are so wrong it hurts.
Tell any Marine, former or active, that they ever "ran like rabbits", and when you regain consciousness, you will have a better understanding of the truth.

The country has gone far downhill since it became acceptable to equate the willingness and ability to fight with being a psychopath.
We have never been loved by overly many people outside our own country, but once upon a time we were respected, mainly because it was understood that we would fight if we or those friendly to us were wronged. Smug contempt impresses no one. Neither, by the way, does the lack of education indicated by not knowing one of the basic rules of written English -- that proper names, whether of people or organizations, are capitalized.

Bgjohn: Watch yourself guy. Dont know what you are getting at but even with intra service squabbling among different services (which is often) we all tend to stick together. However I must admit the Marines seem to be getting to be a pain in the azz here as of late like no others fought in wars. So, just for the hell of it lets check casualty figures for WW 2.

" Here is a list of the ten highest US battle casualties by Division. It is from "The Pacific War Encyclopedia" (Dunnigan & Nofi).
3rd ID: 5558 KIA, 20,419 Wounded
9th ID: 4504, 18,773
4th ID: 4836, 17824
45th ID: 4080, 16913
1st ID: 4280, 16379
29th ID: 4786, 15834
36th ID: 3637, 15829
1st Mar. Div: 5435, 13849
90th ID: 3930, 15270
30th ID: 3516, 14930
Seems strange that 7 Army Infantry Divisions had more casualties than "one of the Marine Divisions and none other Marine Div. showed up on the list. ". Actually, although I served in WW 2 with the 3rd Inf Div
that the highest casualties of any Div, my hat goes off to the 4th Inf Div, which was only in combat for one year yet had the 3rd highest casualties. I notice no Airborne Divs. noted also in these figures.
I also notice, all but the 1st Marine Div fought in the ETO.0 -

Joe - nobody, Marines included, is trying to be a "pain in the azz" but we are going to defend ourselves against false or malicious statements. I would do the same for any branch of the armed forces as they are all to be respected and honored for preserving our rights and freedom. Yes, the Army has suffered many more losses than the other services but, please bear in mind, they are also the largest so their casualties would naturally be higher.

Joe: I have nothing but respect for your service. My Grandfather served as a WWII U.S. Army rifleman. He fought in North Africa, Sicily, and slogged his way up the Italian boot all the way to Rome. He was one of the toughest SOBs I ever knew. I would never claim the Marine Corps is the only "fighting" service

I haven't decided yet what I think of bgjohn's remarks. In a way I'm still waiting for the punch line.
There is no question that his first remark is bogus. What I haven't decided yet is whether he believes it and whether it was intended as a joke or an insult.
I have swapped comments with Marines myself, but it was Marines I knew and not on the eve of the Marine Corps Birthday, and we knew when to stop. There is a time and place for everything. This is not the time or place to be insulting Marines.0 -

If I'm not mistaken, the only "retreat" in Marine history was the Chosin Reservoir, right? And even then it was more of a withdrawal than a full-blown retreat since, to my knowledge, they left no wounded or dead behind.
Regardless, anyone who says the Marines "ran like rabbits" is either ignorant of historical facts or is craving the attention only a troll would want.0 -

Alot of people in this forum don't understand a Marines Pride.
We are proud of who we are,what we do and have done.We may not have liked some of the things we have done,but thats our job.Thats what
makes us different. The title was not given it was earned .That is something I will never for get.Marines can fight, argu and cuss at each other!!!And this is fine with us, But don't you dare come in and start something.Because we will all stick together and come back at you!!!!!!!!!!!!
