Hot water heater Question
As many of you saw on my earlier post, I was without water for most of the day.
Well the way this mobil is set up the hot water heater drained out.
Now I can't get hot water. All my breakers are fine, and I found 1 reset button on the hot water heater it's self and pushed it. still no hot water.
Is there only 1 reset on the heater? Seems to me on a 220v there would be 2, but I only see 1.
Any Idea's from the peanut gallery?[:D]

OK, experts!
My old HWH needs replacing. I need to get a new one. Prefer 60 gallons or more and top efficiency ratings.
Anyone have any experiences or recommendations?
Also, if anyone out there knows any tricks to unscrewing the lower heating element on my Sears (it is frozen solid!) I would love to hear them.

Was the tank on, but empty? you might have burnt up the elememt, a good hardware or plumbing supply should have them.

did the electric stay on during the time the water was draining/drained out of the tank ?
If so you may have ruined both heating elements.
If you have a tester check the continuity, if good, element should still be good, if not head for Home Depot0 -
I agree with dongizmo pull the element out and check with a continuiety tester,if you replace it DO NOT TURN ON till its full of warter a element turned on with no water will burn out with in seconds. 0 -

Well I'll call my landlord in the AM to get it fixed. Just maybe I can talk him into a larger one while I'm at it.
Bad thing is I gotta take a cold shower in the morning because I have a doctors appointment, and I'm sure the doc don't want to smell a stinky A $ z.0 -

We don't generally design equipment to commit suicide. I bet that heater has an internal breaker to shut it off if the water level drops low enough to endanger the elements. Look for a reset button. 0 -
Put a check vavle inline so if it happens again, the water won't drain out. Don 0 -
Nope forget it hot water heaters dont have a brain just a thermostat that tells it when to shut off. If it was without water and still on shes a done deal. 0 -
Well, I'll be. Even the Briggs & Stratton engine on my mower won't start if it is low on oil. I presumed a water heater would have a similar safeguard built in. 0 -

I pushed the only reset I found on it. It was right next to the thermostat.
I never thought about shutting power off to it as I never had a water heater than drained on its own with no water pressure.
It is probly fried.
Just more of a hastle due to my good for nothing nieghbors. I'll be glad when they are gone.

As some one that worked on and sold million dollar medical equipment for many years; I can state, unequivocally that the $15,000.00 dollar circuit board in the main computer of the Cat Scanner will blow to protect the .48 cent fuse....BTDT... [;)][:D][V][:D][:)]0 -
I've got even worse news... Some Mobile Home water heaters do not have elements that can be changed out. It is fried. 0 -

I kind figured that it would just have to be replaced.
The one here is kinda small anyway, so I'll talk him into a larger one. That way I don't have to listen to the kids complain about the other useing all the hot water every night!0 -
Shut the power off to it. See if the elements screw in or are permanent. If they screw in , you will have to shut off the main water supply ( should have a shut off valve on the cold side going in ) Then hook up a hose to the drain and drain the water heater outside. Screw out the element and put the new one in. It takes longer to drain the WH than changing out the element. They make a WH element SOCKET that is huge and goes over the end of the element to screw it out. I have one in my toolbox but it isn't doing you any good 90 mile away. 0 -

I didn't think it was leagal anywhere for a convicted felon to have possesion of a gun.
And I do know that he was worried about anyone knowing it was in his house.

That deal with the $40 reminds me of the film "A Bronx Story", with Robert DeNiro.
DeNiro's teenage son is buddies with the local Mafia guy. DeNiro's son had lent $20 to a guy. The guy wouldn't pay him back, started ducking him. DeNiro's son went to the Mafia guy for help. He figured the Mafia guy would send Carmine over to break the deadbeat kid's kneecaps.
The Mafia guy told DeNiro's son, "Forgeddaboutit. I am not going to injure this guy. This guy used to be a good friend of yours. Now, for only $20, you get to find out exactly what a bum this guy is. The best $20 you ever spent. From now on, just pretend that this guy does not exist."
I kept that advice in mind, a few years ago. I had moved up here to North Carolina. My neighbor, also a newcomer to the area, had stolen my brand new $60 step ladder. I didn't see him do it, but I knew he had done it. I could not prove it, so I had no legal recourse. He denied it. I came close to giving him an ass whipping, which he deserved. I remembered the advice from the Mafia guy in that movie. Here was my brand new neighbor, who I thought was my friend, and for only $60 I found out what a piece of lying scum he really was. Best $60 I ever spent. From that moment on, for me Matthew did not exist.
Five years later, he got run out of the county and state, matter of fact he went to South Carolina. He was bankrupt and he had screwed everyone he did business with out of money. He took one couple for $500, took one guy for $7000. I wasn't surprised.
Anyway, rent "A Bronx Story" some time, you would enjoy it.

Yea I have seen it.
I don't really let the $40 bother me. It is not like it is breaking me. But I would have more respect for a person to tell me "hey I'm an alkie and I really got to have my booze so I can't pay you" than to make a bunch of excuses. And he was giving me these excuses when I was not even asking for the money. In fact I never even brought it up, he did.
But after a while I just cut it off and quit even talking to him. Not a big loss really.0 -

Even if you need a new unit they are only like 300 bucks I think. Depends on how old it was, it might need to be replaced 0 -
There are some electric companies that will furnish you a water heater if you let them put the conservation box on it. Our gun club got a new heater plus installation, good deal. All it does is shut the thing off during the night time for a few minutes to conserve energy. Check around. 0 -

Actually, there is such a thing as a hot water heater.
It heats hot water to steam, for various purposes.
I've installed them.
They're called boilers.
The water heater you have in your house is not capable of boiling water, else it would require special permits,fittings, and safety features. A household water heater has a T&P (temperature and pressure) valve that releases at 210?, 150# of pressure, or a combination of both that will cause it to release before excessive pressures blow the tank and your house to hell.0 -

Our condo is heated by the hot water heater. Its a fantastic system pipes running to little fan radiators in each room. Works great and is half the price of any othe type of normal heat.
It uses one 40 gal hot water heater that is a "high efficency" type. It has a much larger burner and reheats very quickly. Downside is the installation cost is up in the $800 range to replace the unit.0 -
