Yeah, I have always found 'victimhood' to be offensive. This guy should have been applauded rather than fired.

BTW- He was not AT V.T. but talking with his students about what happened at V.T.

I'm sorry, but when I see all of these people sporting Virginia Tech logos with their faces curled up in popular grief, I feel like shaking them until something comes loose.

A lone gunman shoots roughly fifty people, killing thirty-two of them, on a campus with thousands of students, and NOT ONE OF THEM FOUGHT BACK?!?!?

I agree wholeheartedly that this nation celebrates victimhood - victims get big cash settlements. Victims get their airtime on talk shows, news programs, and documentaries. And worse yet, such learned helplessness is encouraged!

"This is a child-safety/gun-free zone. Love and happiness welcome!"

And pedophiles and murderers and scumbags and rapists...[:(!]

WAKE UP AMERICA! No one is responsible for your safety!

The police? It's been determined in court they don't have to do a damned thing to help you.

The government? In over sixty years of ever-growing government intrusion, things have only gotten worse.

The criminals? Maybe if we beg long enough and loud enough they won't hurt us? Maybe that will work?

    F*** that.

Quit crying those damned crocodile tears in an effort to be part of the "in" crowd and start being your own damned person. I'd much rather we were all anonymously alive and safe than popularly dead.

    Ripley,

I wouldn't get down on my knees and beg for mercy, that's for damned sure.

Let's make one thing real clear: a gun is only as good as the person wielding it. Most scumbags and rapists aren't some sort of super man Delta Green Seal Service "SpecOps operator" types - they're wannabe losers full of swagger and a head full of broken glass - hardly the type of person we should be frightened of.

I might not have saved them, but I would have at least gone down trying.

By your logic, we should have surrendered at the Alamo, the Battle of the Bulge, Khe Sanh, and the Chosin Reservoir.

"What? You gonna put on your cape and save all these men? Let's surrender and maybe they'll treat us well in their POW camp!"

People like you encourage this culture of victimhood infesting the nation. Whether that makes you proud or not is none of my concern.

+1 on all of your points, EMM. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who knows what happened at Chosin.

It not a question of who out-guns who, it's a question of who has more balls. A half-dozen unarmed men can, with some effort, overpower any single armed lunatic. Sure, some are going to get shot, some are going to get killed, but how many lives are going to be saved in the process?

Very easy to say EMM, safe behind your computer screen. But how do you know that some of the students didn't do exactly that, and end up getting shot in the process? Theres not much you can do against someone wielding a firearm, unless you too have a firearm. Which none of the students did.

If one moment you're sitting through a boring lecture, and the next some lunatic is executing people, there is no time for logic. The basic fight/flight response kicks in; and when you're facing a guy INTENT on murdering you, who has a gun while you just have a backpack, then most people are going to flee instead of fight. I bet even you, despite your internet bravado, would also run.

Unlike you ElMuertoMonkey, I've had rounds coming my way, I've had a gun held to my head and friends slaughtered senselessly. Unlike you I know what foolish crap you just posted. Only one thing you could be sure of in a similar siuation...you'd be scared more than you can imagine and nobody can predict what they would do or how they will act. Nobody. When you grow up and if experience the real world you'll lose that movie hero bravado attidude. At least I hope so.

You certainly can fight back against a gun.
The guy came into the classroom and everyone hit the floor. He killed the teacher, and then he walked down one aisle, shooting at every student.
When he was halfway down that aisle, he had his back turned to half of the class, some of whom were dead or wounded.
At that point, a guy could have rushed him and taken him down.
It would have been a smart move, because the gunman got to the back of the classroom, and then walked up the other aisle, shooting at everyone else.
I just can't see waiting at the front of that other aisle for him to walk back up and shoot me.
Kids today are taught to be passive and not fight back, and this is what we get.

    MND,

None of the people on 9-11 had box cutters either. When we allow hardware to dictate our threat response, we cede the initiative to anyone who happens to have better toys than we do. "Oops... didn't bring my 9mm today! Time to switch to 'victim' mode!"

Yes, it is easy for me to say what I am saying, but words can beget actions - and there is nothing wrong, absolutely nothing, in advocating action over passive acceptance of a madman's whims.

    Ripley,

And that excuses the immense pride you take in cowardice?

I've had guns pointed at me by people who would not have flinched to pull the trigger. I've had friends shot at. Hell, someone once pulled, racked, and aimed a shotgun at me in my younger days (and they weren't fooling). My friend's dad was shot through the face during an attempted car jacking last year.

Did I sit there, shudder, and curl up into a ball and squeal, "Oh woe! Oh woe! Boo hoo!" No. And neither did any of my friends. My friend's dad? He was p!$$#d he didn't have a gun handy.

I hardly need the hard-eged "real world" experience you've got because I have plenty of my own.

And I learned to deal with it.

I didn't crawl into a shell, curl up in a fetal position, and suck my thumb and hope the bad men won't find me - I deal with it.

So get over yourself and your victim worship. It'll prevent many more massacres than sitting back and hoping for the best will.

Okay, climb off the monkey's back, everyone. What he might have done is of no consequence since the past has passed. But what he expounds is an attitude that can and will make a difference. Have you ever been angry enough to blast your way through a wall--literally? That kind of anger can charge up the old adrenaline and provoke action not for the faint of heart. ONE angry person--weaponless or no--might have made a difference that morning. But the cancerous, emasculated mentality of the media-fed, pu$$y-whipped masses would rather roll over and hope for the best...and somehow expect to NOT be in the body-count.[:(!][:(!][:(!]

He had to reload several times...and if enough folks had charged him (EVEN if he was shooting), they could have overpowered him...some would have been shot and killed in the process, but many more would still be alive today.

Ripley, climb back in your hole...
those on this board may or may not act on the scene as they say they would. no man knows his re-action untill he is actually under fire.
i would hope that any one of us would have the nerve to act in a like situation.
it all comes down to oppertunity, and mind set
constantly thinking and re-thinking the possible actions/re-actions to a certain set of circumstances is in itself one of the greatest ways to have the positive mind set to take on the challenge...you have already seen it in your mind repeatedly and the body takes over with those "mind reactions" already in place

obviously your "cower and whimper" mode is solidly in place...

What do you expect out of a Crapolic university. In spite of what you might initially think, these folks have no concept of right and wrong, free speech or any of the values that most of the folks on this board share. After all, these are the same folks who have given us untold hundreds, maybe thousands, of pedofiles, bankrupted countless dioceses, and in at least one case been convicted of criminal conspiracy. This professor doesn't know it, but being fired from that place was the best thing that has even happened to him.

Very unfortunate. The suits, in this case, the cassocks, are running terribly scared of anything that even hints of intellectual discussion of the gunman's wholesale slaughter of 32 people AND how it might have been avoided then or how it might be avoided in the future. And so, the beat goes on and on and on. Desks cleared at the end of the day. Throats cleared. Cocktails poured. Dinner is now served.

oldemagics, If you had bothered to read what I posted, which you obviously did not, you may have noticed that I was saying the exact same thing. I've been underfire, and know for a fact that reaction to it is unpredictable .

If you or anyone else thinks that is untrue, or cowardly, or any other sophomoric adjective your wee brain can conjour, please put your evidence where we can all see it. When people second guess "what they should have done" or worse, pronounce some the bombastic "what I would have done" nonsense, all they do is tell the world what fools they are.

I've seen the biggest and bravest turned to crap-pants quivering children. I've also seen mild, timid men turned into lions, displaying unbelievable courage. I have no use in this life or any other for wannabe computer warriors telling me how brave or not other people should be. You haven't the foggiest.

So...crawl back into your computer, into your Super-hero dream, and spout some more great wisdom for us all.

I think what he said had a good portion of good in it, but he should of known that everyone around him was going to be sensitive. He has more balls than I for doing what he did, but he should of known before hand it might cost him his job. It is unfortunate, but thats the price of spreading the word.
