Looking for bigger gun
Just got off phone with relative that live close to alaska ,Canada border was talking about bear hunting for next year He said my 30-06 was to under gunned so I was wondering if anybody knew where I could get a a 105 mm. prefably self propelled [:D]

My cousin made it seem like I would be bringing a bb gun if I brought a 30-06 he suggested a 416 I don't know if my shoulder can handle that any suggestions would be welcomed 0 -

Get a gun bigger than his. Install a muzzle brake for reduced recoil. I shot a .300 Mag the other day that kicked like a .223. Wicked. Tell him you bought a .50 BMG.0 -

IMHO, .338 WM is the minimum. However, it's all about shot placement. Instead of .416, you might want to consider the trusty .375H&H or the new .375 Ruger instead. Good luck! 0 -

What kind of Bear?
For Black bear the 30-06 is minimum I would use.
For Brown bear I would use a bigger caliber.
I have shot black bear and they are a lot tougher than a deer.
The last Bear I shot was with a 30-06 and I handloaded 220 grain bullets.0 -
12G slug and 45-70 would work great but the slug gun would definatly be limited to shorter ranges. 0 -
My hunting partner has hunted bear in Alaska and he told me when we were planning for a hunt up there that most guides use rifles of much greater power than a 30-06 because you never know what you will run up against in bear country. The 30-06 would probably be fine for black bear hunting, but if you crossed paths with a brown or grizzly and it decided to challenge you, I think you would want a bit more knock down power. 0 -

The main reason you want a bigger gun is to have the knock down power to anchor the bear. They will not leave a blood trail you can follow like a deer. With a bear you want to crush its front shoulder to put it down.
Shot placement is not everything on a bear. I have witnessed through binoculars a bear hit in the lung/ heart area with a hunters 270 3 times and the bear was not found. I was watching the bear and the rain on its coat gave an excellent visual as to the impacts.
The shots were perfect but there was not enough power to anchor the bear.0 -

I ahve seen the videos also but what the video wont show you is the large caliber rifle, if not two, pointed and ready to drop that bear if something goes wrong.
Videos give a false perception to real life hunting.
Fine and good that an arrowed bear went down... on this video, but for every video that shows success there are 100 videos that never get shown due to failier. I know guys who film big game hunts.0 -

After paying for this trip I probably won't have a new gun budget I never had a need for anything bigger than 30-06 before. Never shot a 375 h&h before how rough is it on an old worn out shoulder. recoil use to never bother me about 2 yrs. ago I dislocated shoulder very recoil senstive now 0 -

If you just gotta go big, call up AHR (Americian Hunting Rifles) and order up a CZ-550 chambered in 600 Overkill and 100 rounds of ammo.
One buddy of mine hunted all his AK bear with a 300 H&H, he only broke out the 375 H&H when he was backing up a paid hunter. His preferance for the clients is that they used the gun they felt most comfortable with, even if it was a 30-40 Krag.0 -

Take your '06 and use it! It is more than capable with the right bullet and good shot placement! But I do recommend a backup gun( I recommend a pump 12ga.) and a partner with somemore firepower as well cause things do go wrong! 0 -

A 45/70 with the correct bullet will handle anything that walks, crawls, swims, or flys.Dave 0 -

30/06 is plenty of gun for any game in North America. Fred Bear killed Brown Bears with a recurve bow and crude broadheads. That being said, if I was going for Alaskan Browns, I'd take a 338 Win Mag. If you take a handgun for back up, grind off the front sight and keep it well oiled. It won't hurt so bad when the big mean bear sticks it up your a$$.[:D]
