When you are a megalomaniacal idiot micromanager, you fire people who don't kiss your butt, and then they hand you your ass in the arbitration hearing, and get reinstated with back pay. But, that's just my story, and that of several co-workers, and an idiot ex-chief.

Me? I've never fired anyone, and will never be in a position to do so, by my choice.

Rosie quote:The mark of a good supervisor is to turn a bad employee into a good one

...that may work in a few cases, but very few within the big picture. There are too many "players" that are good enough to fool even the best of employers. They are in it for themselves and scam every way, and chance they get...they are just built that way and nothing or no one can change them.

Over my 30 years as an employer, I literaly had well over a hundred+ of these scum bags fire themselves...[^]

Megalomaniacal idiot micromanagers try to change people. Make something they are not. There is a difference between trying to change people into something they are not and trying to help guide a person to become better. Please allow me to use a football analogy.

A megalomaniacal idiot micromanager tries to make a runningback with bad hands but can run with the ball into a receiver. Then he releases him because he doesn't work with his "system". A smart manager realizes the running back can run with the ball real well and adapts the system to the guys abilities. The manager looks like a genius and the player is credited for reaching his potential.

Getting back to Forest Gump's original question, if the guy has a serious character flaw that has been his downfall at previous jobs, do it ASAP. If the person is not going to change and there are no special circumstances, why should the rest of the team have to put up with the problem. The longer a manager waits, the lower the moral of the entire workplace. Make it quick and as painless as possible.

I've only met one guy in the last 15 years that was fired because he was just not smart enough to do the job. Poor guy was in every department but one before being terminated. He was given every break possible, partly because his father worked their at the time. He just couldn't handle the job. Which is sad because retarded people have worked and retired from there. This guy wasn't retarded. He just had a severe learning disability that probably could have been dealt with more agressively in his youth. Sad, but he had to go.

Fire 'em when you feel like it.

    Never give a reason.

Funny how when a person is fired who has to be fired, other employees are glad he is gone, but yet they still complain that the guy shouldn't have been fired. Yes, Joe was lazy. Yes, Joe couldn't show up on time. Yes, Joe didn't do any work when he was there and everyone else had to carry him. But yet, people still whine that he shouldn't have been fired.

Maybe this just happens in union shops, but I've seen it a couple of times.

Not always true I will never leave you wondering if I send you home you will know it is ok to start looking for a job[;)]

The man that owns the company I work for told me when I started running jobs for him if they made mad enuogh to raise my voice to put thier ass on the road

But I usually talk to them once and if that doesn't work they have to go I dont have time to run a daycare!

Anytime, anywhere, any reason, but, dont have to have one.
Oklahoma is a right to work state.
And we can do anything we want in Oklahoma.

I think you are confusing a "right to work" state with an "at will employment" state. A right to work law allows an employee the option of working union or non union. An at will employment state allows an employer to fire anyone at any time without just cause.

I have fired a few in my time. Most of them were teenagers or college students who were asking for it.

Funny thing was when I had my music store I had a bunch of hippie degenerate musician types working for me. They were all model employees. When I had my tutoring business I had a bunch of "respectable" wanna-be teachers working for me, and I could only depend on a couple of them.

    Clouder..

It's surprising how many people don't understand that.

I agree with fivefivesix on this one. Friday.... less chance... bad... happen...

Ok, you're a new employee and this is what I'm going to tell you right now. If you are ever so much as two minutes late reporting to work, I am going to fire you on the spot. However, anytime I want you to stay beyond your scheduled time. you will do it, even though I will never pay you extra for it or acknowledge your dedication. Also, you have told me that you don't smoke, well, I smoke and about half the people working here smoke. We are going to take our smoke breaks several times a day. Don't YOU even think about asking for a break unless I tell you that you can have one. Now, I know you've heard about the long time employee we had here a couple of years ago that missed some time complaining of headaches, said he had been to several local doctors who could find nothing, and got fired for being a malingerer. Well, just because he died a painful death from a brain tumor, don't think you are going to get away with playing the "sick card". Oh, and one more thing, don't park your POS pickup truck anywhere near my Mercedes, because if you do, I'll have Juan, my handyman, pay you a visit. Just remember that since the mills have closed, there are a lot of guys who are standing in line waiting for a chance to work here for half what they used to make. Truth be, I would give more of them a chance, but, most seem to have a second job and I won't stand for that. Any questions? Good, I didn't think so. Oh, one more thing. Take that stupid bumper sticker off. My guy won, get over it. Welcome aboard.
