When Do You Fire Someone ??
at what point do you fire an employee ?

If I've learned anything from "Office Space," it's that 'statistics show that when you fire someone on a Friday, there's a less likely chance something bad will happen.' 0 -
Depends on the circumstances. Treat each case as an individual. 0 -
It depends on the reason for termination. Some things, such as threats, sexual harassment, theft, serious insubordination, warrant immediate dismissal. Others, such as poor performance, tardiness, absenteeism, or failing to meet goals are best handled in a thoroughly documented manner. Most companies have a probationary period where the company can dismiss without cause during the period. Anybody who is an employer should have an employee handout which spells out the rules and expectations. A new employee should read and understand said rules. There's a lawyer lurking around every corner. 0 -
Details????
I think woodshermit got it. Except for the lawyer thing. If you go there, you'll never do what needs doing.0 -
You must first determine if the employee ever saw you and your secretary going into the Motel 6......If not, it should be safe to fire him..... 0 -
Well I am in the Army. Here is what I do with my troops. (you would have to adjust it to for civilian application)
First for the serious stuff, like mentioned above. that would be immediate dismissal. but for apathy it goes like this.
First offence is a one on one verbal informal counseling.
Second time (same offence) written counseling.
Third time (same offence) written counseling with corrective training.
Forth time (same offence) recommend to the commander that the soldiers rank or pay or both be taken.
Now on a lot of different offices, the same applies. but the counseling is on general apathy and irresponsibility instead of something specific.
After all that, the soldier is usually given to another NCO to see if he will respond with a "fresh start". If not we send him home.
Hope that helped some0 -
Anytime, anywhere, any reason, but, dont have to have one.
Oklahoma is a right to work state.
And we can do anything we want in Oklahoma.0 -

I've hired and fired a bunch over the years. Unless the infraction is such that it requires immediate termination, I will fire a warning shot, or two, across their bow first. I realize that many times others (family) are dependent on the employee in questions income, thus I explain to the employee what has been unsatisfactory about their employment with the company, what is required of them to maintain that employment, what action (termination) will result if things don't change, and make them aware that I will monitor their performance until positive changes appear permanent. I feel this process is fair for all involved, and if I have to use the axe, I don't have a guilt trip afterwards. It works for me. 0 -
...Over 30 year period, I never fired anyone, they fired themselves...[;)]
...I had 3 rules I layed out to a new employee when they were hired, breaking ANY of the 3 rules, they were fired immediatly, no questions ask...
1) DON'T lie to me.
2) Don't steal from me.
3) Don't show up even 2 minutes late, or be absent your first wk on the job...unless a death in the immediate family...hey, THEY came to ME looking to work.
...one guy was fired at noon on Christmas eve...I was letting everyone leave at noon anyway to start the holiday early...he just left permenately.

Well put, this is so often true.0 -
there are many reason i guess to fire someone, too many to list here. however, this is my PET PEEVE....when i tell someone what to do or how to do it and they mess it up i give them a second chance. if they do it again i basically put them on probation in my mind. if they do it a third time i fire them. i would fire them after the second time but right now in america its hard to find good workers and if i fire someone i am not sure i can replace them in a timely manner with someone who is competent. i can deal with sweeties, people i hate, and even people who miss work occasionally (my business doesnt require you to be there everyday). the thing i CANT deal with though is when people do things incorrectly, especially after i explain in detail what to do. 0 -
...no not celebrating early...he had been soliciting work for himself, from my customer who's business he was working on at the time...while on my time. My customer dropped the dime on him, handed me my employees business card he had given to my customer[:0] All a big no no.
If this jerk had performed any work for my customer while my Co was still there doing work, and there had been ANY problem...would have been a can of worms to sort out "who" was responsible for the problem...me...or my jerk employee. Could have cost me major $$$$$.
...Never once did I give a second thought about these people who fired themselves. I paid every employee a wage way above what they could get anywhere in the metroplex. If they needed off, and let me know ahead of time and it did not interfere with a job, I let them off. I paid them for ALL Federal holidays, though I did not have to.
I gave VERY generous bonuses, and not just at Christmas. I gave vacation trips away on a rotating basis so everyone would recieve one. I paid them when they took a sick day, and on and on. I respected my employees and realized they MADE my Co...they in return would walk on water for me if I ask. I had 0 turnover except for the jerks that fired themselves...the employees are the only thing I miss after selling my Co in 2000...[;)]

...Bloviator: "2 minutes late, first week on the job."
..Had a real mental case that was late every day, his first week. One day, he even bumped his car into the office, claiming his brakes were out. I couldn't fire him, but when my manager did, I knew he "might show up". Sure enough, here he comes friday afternoon. I was on top of a grain bin with a Mini 14. Never said a word...just made sure that he saw me. End of problem. (ps...always have the high ground)...[;)]0 -
Bloviator,
You sound like a man I used to work for.
Acheiving zero turnover is gaining ground (with notable exceptions) as the best way to keep costs down. But, as you found, you can give your employees all the respect in the world and you'll still hire someone who feels like the world owes him. Case in point was my former sports director. He had the biggest sense of entitlement I've ever seen. Fun fella and good at calling the games, but zero drive. He lasted two years before my boss decided we just couldn't afford to have somebody on payroll who contributed absolutely nothing to the bottom line. God bless my boss, but we should've made that cut a year and a half earlier.0 -
As soon as they become indispensable.
Clouder..0 -
When they deserve it. [:p] [;)] 0 -
As soon as possible...or never. 0 -
I worked for a guy once where I told him over 50% of the employees at this location were actively looking for another job. Made me wonder if we were doing something wrong and perhaps we should be doing some self examination. He thought otherwise. Guy's were young, wanted better, and didn't realize how good they have it.
Work at a place now where people plan on retiring from the company.0 -

Right after you make your peace with God, just in case the bozo is a psychopathic crazed killer just waiting for a chance to unload....That is unless, oh course you are an atheist, in which case prolonging it would be pointless!!!!0 -
in construction they never fire you ... they just send you back home to starve you until you go away[;)][B)] 0 -
It's very easy to fire someone. The mark of a good supervisor is to turn a bad employee into a good one. Yes I have walked the walk. Been a supervisor for 37 years. 0 -

I will give a 3-4 week probation period. Some of the best people can be clunky at first learning the ropes and whats expected. Most of the time I can tell in a week or two who will make the cut. But then, I have been in my field 26 years now and can see what kind of real world experience a new person has.0 -

Captplaid is right. Every case is different. Personal 'issues' can play a part. I had a salesman who's wife was cheating on him. His work sucked till he came to grips with it (with help) and he ended up better than he had ever been. It's in the details. Here in VA we can fire because they cut themselves shaving. What's the point, though? 0
