The Bible and history---question
First of all, I'm a Christian. Read parts of the Bible; but, not through and through. Got a question that's always puzzled me.
We know, from discoveries, etc., that dinosaurs and all sorts of creatures roamed the earth millions of years ago.
Now, what was God doing all this time?

as far as carbon dating goes the half-life, the amount of time it takes for half of a given amount of mass to change. is about 5,000 years. 100% goes to 50% then 50% of the remaining quantity. then 50% of remaining quantity, and so on and so on. carbon 14 decays into carbon 12. so with extended time millions of years carbon dating is useless. and slower decaying element is used. uranium for example decays into lead. im not sure on the half life of uranium but its over 10million years i believe. so by looking at how much has decayed and how much of a given sample has yet to decay and exact date can be determmined. unlike relative dating which uses priciple of superposition to determine dates. layer 1 is under layer 2 therefore layre 1 is older than layer 2 0 -

i dont belive GOD wrote the bible. people interpreted his word and wrote it down. is there at any part of the bible that GOD takes and earthly form to actually record the events of time into the bible? he sends his son to spread his message, yes. but the bible was written by many disciples, prophets, and so forth. and as with all writings everyone inteperates differently, correct? and over the course of thousands of years people reading identical verses have all interperated them in the exact same way? i dont believe so.0 -
You misunderstad my reply completely. Of course, Twain never had the insight as to what happens after death, just as you and I don't. I used his quote (thru a fictitious character) simply to exemplify it.
I believe there was (is) a Creator (s) but that He, She, They couldn't care less what happens to human beings as long as we procreate so as to furnish whatever reasons He, She, They had for creating us in the first place. As to after death experiences, well this could be the "will to believe" just as we take for Gospel in whatever faith you choose to believe, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist . . . . .0 -

The Bible itself tells us, in one verse, how it is the bible came about, "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the father by the prophets....Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son" Hebrews 1:1-2a
The first phrase is talking about the Old testament, and the 'fathers' are the fathers of Israel. And here, God was careful to tell the prophets just what to say. He even wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger. And was known to warn prophets that they were to speak only what God told them to speak, no adding, so subtracting. Remember Balaam's donkey? who turned about and spoke to Balaam who had tried to influence and add to God's Word? God then spake to Balaam and stated the principle, "....but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak." Numbers 22:35c, and 2 Peter 2:15-16.
The second phrase, "....Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son" refers to the New testament.
This is referring to the Holy Spirit, who is God dwelling in us. Under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, New testament witnesses and chroniclers were led to report their experiences of God, not to just repeat God's Words by rote. This allows in the human equation which was lacking in the Old testament speakings. But it also allows in apparent errors, or contradictions.
But of the Bible as a whole? I've read it from end to end many times. And I can tell you the Bible is a book, written by many different authors, under many different circumstances....but given all that, it is still the most coherent book on the planet. It has a beginning, a subject, a context and an ending result. And every bit of it dovetails together beautifully.
You mention interpretation, and yes, personal interpretations have almost made the Bible of none effect in these modern times. We are not to intrepret the scriptures, but are rather to properly divide them. Here are two passages related to this very thing, "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.'
'For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." 2 Peter 1:20-21.
And finally, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, RIGHTLY DIVIDING the word of truth." 2 Timothy 2:15
I think the most critical part, is to simply take it as written....
