Did they find you with a mental heath issue? Are there and records of it?
Seems to me there's no problem then.
Just for the record and lest somebody think I'm a certified nutcase, it was a paperwork drill to meet the requirements of the Navy. I was found sound of body and mind and did Winter-Over 1964/1965.
OK, maybe I'm a nutcase, but not certified. [:D]
Point being I didn't elect to see a psychiatrist, I was ordered to see a psychiatrist by competent military authority. The feds look on that the same as being ordered by a judge.0 -

No need to create a problem if it doesn't exsist.[;)]
It's very likely that this being forty-four years ago I'll be dead before the records are searched back that far, but there are 303,633,355 other Americans.
I'm not sure of your point. Is the gov going to deem every american mentally ill?
Or are you saying it's ok for the mentally ill to own firearms?
If everyone has the right to own firearms then why is it illegal for felons to own guns?0 -

Well to me anyone that wants to go to antarctica and freeze their patoot off, would make me scratch my head. Just the same as those that want to climb mount everest.[xx(]
Well if that comes up you can kindly explain to them that anyone that wants to go to antarctica needs a phyciatric evaluation.[:D][:D]
But not to own a firearm.LOL0 -
Sounds like the work of those zionist pigs that run our country. There will be more to come from them. Be sure of it. When Hillary becomes President she will really make it hell for the midlle class, working white man. 0 -

Maybe I don't know all the details but what's wrong with a mentally ill person not being allowed to own a gun?
Sounds like a good idea to me.
We already have that law in Illinois.
I don't know all the details either, and that is part of the problem.
A newspaper or TV reporter's interpretation of what some politician told him his understanding of what the bill might say means nothing. What is important is what the bill actually says and WHAT A JUDGE THINKS IT SAYS.
I have two problems with the bill, regardless of what it says:
1. The federal government has no authority to regulate firearms. Period.
2. In 1963 I volunteered for the Winter-Over Party of Operation Deep Freeze. At that time the Navy required all members of the Winter-Over Party to have a psychiatric evaluation. I was selected for the Winter-Over Party of DEEP FREEZE 11 in 1964. I was ordered to report to a psychiatrist. I went to his office at the appointed time, stood at attention in front of his desk, and the interview went as follows:
Me: Petty Officer JamesRK reporting as ordered, sir.
Psychiatrist: Why did you volunteer to go to Antarctica?
Me: Because I've never been there.
Psychiatrist: Get out of my office!
I've been told, but I don't know, that I might be disqualified from buying a firearms because I was ORDERED to see the psychiatrist.
So this part of the bill will help you:
The government would pay for the cost of appeals by gun owners and prospective buyers who argue successfully in court that they were wrongly deemed unqualified for mental health reasons.
The ignorance...[V]
So, you vote for putting a gun in the hand of a mentally ill person.
I am glad you cleared that up for me.[;)]0 -

ECC you have as much right to an opinion as I do.
But I just have to wonder if you've had a phyciatric evaluation lately?[:D]

If everyone has the right to own firearms then why is it illegal for felons to own guns?
That's three questions. I'm not sure how on point they are, but I'll attempt to answer them.
"Is the government going to deem ever American mentally ill?"
As insane as that sounds, it's not outside the bounds of what I would expect from the government. There are psychiatrists today who consider owning or wanting to own a firearm a sign of mental instability.
"Are you saying it's OK for the mentally ill to own firearms?"
If the mentally ill are stable enough to roam at will in the public, then yes, they should have all of their God given rights. As much as I hate answering a question with a question, let me ask you one. How much of the "Bill of Rights" would you deprive the mentally ill? Is it OK to search their homes without a search warrant? If you would not violate their Fourth Amendment rights, why would you deprive them of their Second Amendment rights? Or maybe you would take the Fourth also. How about the First?
If the mentally ill are not stable enough to roam at will in the public, then a judge needs to commit them to a place where they can be properly supervised.
"If everyone has the right to own firearms then why is it illegal for felons to own guns?"
Good question. Why are felons deprived of their Second Amendment rights? To tell you the truth, I don't know. If a person is trusted enough to be let out of prison and roam at will in the public, why shouldn't he be entitled to the "Bill of Rights"?
In my opinion there are a lot of felons who should be inmates or dead (this is a subject for another thread), but if they have indeed "paid for their crime", why shouldn't they be restored full citizenship?
Anybody who can't be trusted to own a gun shouldn't be trusted to run loose.0 -

That's part of the problem James. Some that are "out" belong "in" and vice versa. Especially pedaphiles, but that's a whole nother story.
I think you answered your/my question about the mentally ill.
There are different levels of it just as there's different levels of crime.0 -

The same people who passed 2640 make the laws concerning the mentally ill and felons. Their logic is if we make laws on this end that suck, we must make equally bad laws on the other end.
My opinion differs.0 -

And hunter mag, this boils down to ONE thing. It IS an infringement, something the Fed is prohibited from doing! Get it? 0 -

If the destruction of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States of America is in conflict with common sense, I'll have to count myself with the legally stupid and terminally incompetent.
I don't see the common sense in moving this great nation from a democratic republic to a totalitarian state, but then I have just declared my abandonment of common sense.0 -
No, you are being short-sighted. How is it common sense to allow the govt. to take someone's freedom? It is a feel good instant gratification thing, isn't it? Long term, one more step down the road to subjugation. I don't see the common sense in subjugation, sorry. Americans only think in short term, that is why our freedoms are flushed down the toilet, and that is why China is kicking our ass. They think long term. 0 -

Question, if the SCOTUS overturns the current ruling, then wouldn't this new law go out the window ? Or am I off base ? 0 -
You guys think that you should have the right to decide who can own guns and who can't by deciding who should be able to buy guns and who can't instead of the government. That it's an induvidual issue. This is the very thing you say the government shouldn't be doing.
The only indvidual issue is if I decide if I want to own a gun or not, not if you don't like the way I dress or look dictates wheather I should own a gun.
And yes it is common sense that felons and mentally ill people should not own guns. No I'm not talking about a speeding ticket or someone that gets counseling for family problems. Ya think some mass killer that gets 5 years in a mental institution should be allowed to go right out and buy a gun the day he gets out? If so then you are part of the reason the government makes laws like this.
Yet you are intolerant of those who are not inline with your every belief.
Seems to me there's plenty of bigotry and hipocrisy going around.[xx(]0 -
Here is how I see it. Everyone is now guilty and will have to prove their innocence. The already overloaded courts will not be able to get everyone in to court so they can prove themselves. You'll wait many, many years to be heard, and by then your buddies have long been on that hunting trip and back before you can go purchase a shotgun to hunt pheasants.
I was a heavy drinker. I sought help. I went to the VA. They sent me to see a shrink. Shrink prescribes me antidepressants to help me battle my addiction. I've been sober now for almost 5 years. Flags go up and now I lose my ability to buy a firearm. I appeal. I receive a court date in 2055. I'd be dead before I could ever get my day in court and my rights reinstated. People will die because they can't purchase a firearm to protect themselves.
The way I see it, this is just another way to disarm the populance.0 -
SARGE, your dead on. Look at the tens of thousands of returning Vets seeking help for PTSD (which I think the DOD and VA have finally cracked the code on) Many will be medically discharged as mentally unfit to return to combat, with 2640 you will have thousands of Soldiers that fought defending our rights not even be allowed to exercise theirs.
And to make it worse now many will not get the help they need for fear of losing their rights!0 -
quote:You guys think that you should have the right to decide who can own guns and who can't by deciding who should be able to buy guns and who can't instead of the government.
Uh...not quite. The Constitution of the United States of America says in very plain, easy to understand English who can possess a firearm. That is all we need. Congress has no right to infringe upon the Constitution of the US, and if they overstep their power and do so, the Supreme Court is supposed to act and change it. Now things are so cluster-****** in America that the SCOTUS is making laws changing the Constitution, and Congress is to. It's past time that the American people took a stand. NRA and other special interest groups be damned.0
