I detest Brinks Home Security ads
You have seen these ads, a thug sneaks up to an upper middle class house and rattles the door.
The alarm goes off. The mommy and children are terrified. The "man" of the house is so terrified he can barely answer the phone.
On the other end is Brinks Home Security.
"Is anything wrong?" asks the Security man.
"I think someone is breaking in," replies the husband.
"I'll send help right away" replies the Security man.
Notice how passive the inhabitants are. They are not even aggressive enough to dial their own phone; they cower in fear until Brinks calls them.
I detest these ads which portray Americans as such passive cowards.
If a thug rattled the door at my house, first he would hear my dogs barking quite loudly.
The next sound not be heard by the thug, but it would be the sound of the cocking of the .44
I don't have Brinks Security.

Here is a good experiment for you guys:
First: Call the 911 and say that you think sombody is trying to break into your house
Second: Call the local pizza delivery place
When the cop arives you can offer him a slice of pizza0 -
I think my wife hates them more than I do because every time it comes on it sets me off on a rant.
If she has the clicker, she changes the channel so she won't have to hear another rant.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks it's big family of puzzys.0 -
A real intruder to do harm would cut the phone line. 0 -

"Probably the bigest deterent are the window stickers. I like all of the big talk of some of you guys- thinking they would grab their gun. What if you are not home? I'm sure the security system would be good then. Maybe if you don't have one they can steal you firearms while you are not home or on vacation. They should have plenty of time inside your house without the security system.
I am not saying that a security system is of no value. In some circumstances, I myself would have one. As you say, if I were not at home it would be of some value. This would not be because the police would come in a timely fashion. The value of the alarm system is that a loud siren goes off inside the house 45 seconds after the door is broken in. This siren is loud enough to wake the dead and would run off most intruders, fearful that neighbors would spot them, and if for no other reason than that they were afraid of damage to their ears.
So the bad guy would only have a minute or so in which to loot your house.
I am just criticizing these ads for their portrayal of the homeowners as such cowards, and for the lies these ads tell in saying that Brinks will call immediately, which they won't, and for saying that the police will come right out and save the people, which they won't.
I don't have a security system where I now live because, as I said, when I am home my security is a .44, and if I am not at home it would be of no use. The nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away, the alarm sounding in my house would be useless.0 -
you guys take advertisements to literal, those commercials are designed to show how people feel by exaggeration, i don't care if your sitting down watching tv with your best gun in your lap, someone kicks in the door in the next room it may startle you, the commercial that shows the guy in the country raising his oar and yelling "i can finally relax", i can relate to that very much
i have brinks, so far each of the kids and the wife has set it off a few times each, 90 seconds tops brinks is on the phone each and every time, police has never had to respond, but their time is on them not brinks
a dog is no substitute for a electronic alarm system, you will not realize it until you have both, each has its each has its advantage but the alarm doesn't have any disadvantages0 -
Iron bars and a 12 Ga shotgun. Two cats that hear EVERYTHING! They would wake me if I didn't hear a strange noise. Everything else is in the gunsafe. It took me and my neighbor "Bubba" a lot of trouble getting it in the house empty. I doubt a football team could get it out without removing a wall.

They'd have to get past my moat first, which is stocked with alligators and hammerhead sharks. Then, they'd have to get past the front door, which is guarded by twin-50-cal machine guns guided by both infared and laser motion detectors. Then, they'd have to get past the claymore mines that I've lined the entire foyer with. After that, I have my own private army of janitors to mop them up off the floor with a squeegee.
So, no, I don't need no stinkin' Brinks Home Security.
Of course, my friends never come over, but hey, that's a small price to pay for security.0 -

Yep, same here. Border Collie security underwritten by Smith&Smoker.0 -
As I posted above,......I only use mine at night, for an early warning system. The beeping from the keypads,......which I have one in the master bedroom, wakes me immediately.
I don't think for one minute that it will get the police here any quicker than calling 911, which would take about 15 minutes, IF there was an officer available at the little Sheriffs substation that is closest.
I live in the "suburbs", and do have a house on each side of me, although everyone has at least a 1.25 acre lot, so I can't spit on the house next door![:D]
If someone was to break in while I was gone, it may help, as my neighbors, are both retired, and seem to never leave. I have horns in the attic soffit, on both sides of the house, and when it goes off, it sounds like an "air-raid" warning system. I tested it one day long ago, and didn't warn the neighbors,........they were outside looking before I could even get outside. I also have the window stickers, and the yard signs. I DO believe in MY particular situation, and area, that it may reduce my risks of a break-in from a petty thief while I am not here.
A home invasion, or a crackhead that is willing to bash through a door, or window while I am home,...........no value other than the few seconds of "beeping" to let me know something has been breached, and to let me get ready.
It all depends where you live whether they have any value or not, but if you are relying on it to save your life,.......you are a fool!
And yeah, ALL the commercials suck![}:)]0 -
I posted this before but here goes again. I have a house I rent and a former tenant years ago wanted ADT security. So , they came out and did the keypad , alarms on windows the whole nine yards. I was mowing the place one day and this loud siren noise started going off. It would go off and then come back on and the tenant was not home. So I went inside and disarmed it with my pocket knife. ( I cut a wire ). The phone rang and I answered it.. I figured it was the ADT people. First question was .. is everything ok and is this Ms.
. I answered NOPE.. I cut the wire and shut the thing off. They asked who I was... I said the Landlord.. Then about 10 minutes later, I went back to mowing , a guy pulls up in an ADT car. I shut off the mower and go see what he wants. The house is locked. He is about 5'8" and weighs maybe 130#. He asked me who I am ? I asked him if he was the burglar checker? and if he is , where is your gun or weapon of some kind? He looked puzzled. I told him I was the Landlord but IF I was the bad guy he would need considerable help defending himself. What an idiot to go check on a home unarmed.0 -
