I detest Brinks Home Security ads
You have seen these ads, a thug sneaks up to an upper middle class house and rattles the door.
The alarm goes off. The mommy and children are terrified. The "man" of the house is so terrified he can barely answer the phone.
On the other end is Brinks Home Security.
"Is anything wrong?" asks the Security man.
"I think someone is breaking in," replies the husband.
"I'll send help right away" replies the Security man.
Notice how passive the inhabitants are. They are not even aggressive enough to dial their own phone; they cower in fear until Brinks calls them.
I detest these ads which portray Americans as such passive cowards.
If a thug rattled the door at my house, first he would hear my dogs barking quite loudly.
The next sound not be heard by the thug, but it would be the sound of the cocking of the .44

...and then there's the suggestion that Brinks would actually and instantly respond to an alarm and the local police would actually come out to investigate an alarm at a private residence. Most police will not in a timely manner........or if at all.

We have a monitored home alarm (guardian) but we use it for while we are not at home. It has gone off once - a faulty sensor and they call within a couple of minutes and ask what you want to do. That time I said to send the cops. They came at some point (who knows when) and sent me a nasty-gram for a false alarm.
The Brinks commercial shows the alarm going off right away. I know a lot of people with home alarms and no one turns it on when they are at home unless it is bedtime. And then it is not the "instant" alarm it is the 1 minute delayed. We have never used the instant setting - too many false alarms from opening the door and forgetting the alarm is on.0 -

We set our alarm to "Instant" when we go to bed at night. Yes, we have had the occasional false alarm by forgetting that it was on and opening the door in the morning, but ADT will not call until the alarm has been going off for at least 90 seconds!!! Personally, I think that stinks! I have asked them NUMEROUS times what the point is of having an "Instant" feature if they are going to delay the call to check my status. They give me a different answer every time. 0 -
I have one myself, but Protection One.
I set it when I am gone, and sometimes at night.
Mine is set for a 30 second delay before sounding the horns, and dialing.
Have had no false alarms, but I am the first up, and disarm it right away.
If nothing else, I figure the beeping for 30 seconds will give me a few seconds of warning to get into the right position, and hopefully state of mind, to face an intruder, or several.
Yes,.....I am a very light sleeper, no one can even open or close a door without me waking up.
The commercials ARE disgusting though. They play off of the "fear" factor, and that your local police are on the way. Unfortunately for me, all they would be doing is tagging my big toe, by the time they got here.
I use it for an "early warning system", and put no more faith than that in it.0 -
Brinks should suggest that you install a phone line under your bed and rubber matting to stop the urine from staining your floor. 0 -
The Brinks commericals are bogus!
When he says he's sending help right away what he really means is that he is going to NOTIFY the police to respond. As has been stated above the response is not only NOT IMMEDIATE, but may not come at all.

Probably the bigest deterent are the window stickers. I like all of the big talk of some of you guys- thinking they would grab their gun. What if you are not home? I'm sure the security system would be good then. Maybe if you don't have one they can steal you firearms while you are not home or on vacation. They should have plenty of time inside your house without the security system. 0 -

Maybe in the good old days, but the new stuff takes more than a dog will eat at a time to kill them and even then it will take a up to weeks. At least that's what my vet tells me and I tend to believe my pops.[;)] My old dog at thast stuff all the time (accident of course) never really got sick. Pops would bring me some shot to give him when I found he ate some. Rat poison thins their blood.

The best Alarm system you can get for your house is a dog.
A few dogs are one of the besthome security systems around, beaten only by the few dogs+armed inhabitant security system.
FYI- in the neighboring town of Fremont, the cops DO NOT respond to home security systems.
Too many security systems that people had going off at the littlest thing (racoon comes down from the nearby hills, squirrels got in through the cat/dog door, house pet somehow sets it off, someone fumbles and enters a password wrong, etc).
The police cheif was fed up with it, said they didnt have the resources to respond to all the calls, and the courts already said they didn't have to respond, so they don't.
So you gotta ask, does the security system have its own response team, or does it just try to send police? Around here the police are likely to say F U to the security company.
Your only hope is calling the cops yourself as you hide -hoping they just steal your stuff, and aren't there to rape/kill.
Or hoping they run when the alarm goes off.
More likely they'll run when the dog starts barking, or the lights come on and they hear a round being chambered.0 -

I recall an ADT ad one time that really set me against them. Ad showed a picture of a handgun with a caption something like :"This may get your family killed. Be safe and responsible by installing an ADT monitored alarm system". They got a strongly woreded letter from me which was answered with the typical form letter. 0 -

We have ADT.
When we went to Vonage telephone service and disabled the telephone lines,we became aware ADT and probably others alarm through telephone wires that are exposed outside the house. Not very cool at all.
ADT offered a battery powered transmitter that solved both problems.0 -

I recall that ad campaign. They showed a .45 pistol and the words.... " This cannot call the police"
I wrote them a letter also and sent a copy to the CRPA who printed it in their Newsletter.
I explained that, yes, a pistol cannot call the police, but it can help keep you alive until the police arrive which is usually 3 to 5 minutes away.
On the Brinks ad. When the guy kicks in the front door, then runs when the alarm sounds..... What if he does NOT run and charges in with a knife or gun. Those folks would be toast.
We have had incidents in the city where I work where alarms companies never even called the police when an alarm was tripped. This is usually on graveyard shift when there techs are asleep at the switch.0
