You COULD have an sks pistol that short, if it the receiver was originally papered as a pistol. I doubt there are any in this country that WERE done this way......so it's illegal.

I have heard nightmare tales of bad "back door" deals....even if you THINK you have something in the works that you are positive you can get away with....DON'T DO IT....EVER!
You will be the fall guy in the end...forever you will be something that person can hold as a "trump card" to get himself out of trouble (or to lessen his punishment.)
Say the guy you buy something like that from gets behind in child support. He is facing some kind of fine or will serve some time in jail. He, all of the sudden, is offering information on a sale of a sten....you don't even have to still have the thing....because we all know it will turn up sooner or later and things could come back to you at some time.
Don't involve yourself EVER with anything like that....you won't last long before something happens. Its got to be hard to sleep at night with things like that hanging about.0 -

I would have seized it. We might have come to an agreement, but no way would he have walked out the door with it.
Get the idiot's ID and record the information on it. Call the local PD or SO and run the serial number, assuming it still has one, through NCIC. If it's clear, offer the idiot a choice.
Walk away before the cops arrive, or wait until they get here.
Or watch, while I strip the gun for usable parts and then torch the receiver.
Of course, in its present configuration, it's the barrel that is the problem. If it can be easily removed, toss it and you have a usable SKS receiver.
Then, you can pay the idiot for the parts.
I have had two Smith & Wesson revolvers with obliterated serial numbers come into my possession over the years. In each case, I kept the parts and destroyed the frames.
I was at a gun show one day when a fellow walked up with a Mossberg pump shotgun that had been sawed off too short. When he showed it to me, I removed the barrel and told him not to re-install it. I advised him to put the barrel in a vise and mash it flat. He didn't want to sell it for what I wanted to pay for a Mossberg w/o barrel, so he walked away with his gun in pieces.0 -

bs. y'know what? I was standing in line to get into a gun show, this guy behind me had an AR. apparently he was taking it in to sell it. I said "nice gun" he says "yeah you wanna buy it" I looked it over and said "how much" he says $1000, it's a pre-ban (this is during the ban) I said ok and bought it. just to be sure, I had him fill out a bill of sale with the serial no. he left, just to be safe in case it wasn't a pre-ban I took it apart for the trip home (...of course) when I got home, I checked the ser. no. on a pre-ban list on the internet, and guess what?? it was post ban. so I got ripped off. I was furious. I called the police dept. (fraud squad) they wouldn't do anything because as far as they knew, it wasn't an ongoing fraud. so I call the ATF. tell them what I got (in pieces), ask them what they want to do with it, and what they're going to do about this ripoff artist. they said bring it in so we can look at it. I brought it in, with the bill of sale.
what did they do about it??
not a damn thing. I don't even know why they bothered to have me come in.
