safe combination lock...
I have a relatively new gun save - nothing special. But, I figure it will slow any would-be thiefs down a little while my security system alerts the neighbors.
It is a Liberty "Centurion". The lock is a manual combination lock. I've never had any trouble opening it - sometimes I fail on the first or second attempt, but then I get it right.
Today, I dialed the combo about 25-30 times with no luck. I have the combination stored (in a secure file) on my PC so I'm not forgetting the correct combination.
Other than being a complete moron does anyone have any suggestions?
Is it best to go just past a number before reversion or should I stop exactly on the number?

People seldom go around enough on the first time. Minimum 4 turns Left, Exactly 3 turns right, Exactly 2 turns left, less than one turn right and voila! Open! 0 -
If it is a changeable combo, it might have slipped, and there is no way sawe a safecracker/locksmith to get you in, if that happened.
Alternatively, it may have been "programmed" a little off. Try to do one of the numbers a half off one way or the other, and keep trying different offsets (first number half off left, others ok, first number half off right other numbers correct, first number ok, second number half off, thrit number ok, etc....usually the locks can tolerate plus or minus a half division.
Are you sure that you are remembering the number and directions of the turns between numbers? My S&G set needs to see the second number go by once before stopping on it the second round...
My lock also requires to be turned to a certain number after the combo has been dialed, to get the door open. Surely you didn't forget that?

each one can be slightly different, some being more fickle than others about exact numbers, make sure you spin it several times before the first number, and the correct direction, make sure the opening handle is in the correct position 0 -
I did try the handle all the way down (tight to the right) and all the way left (as if opening).
I wrote the combo instruction on the password protected PC file and included the correct numbers in hex.
I'm supposed to turn left and stop at number 1 on the fourth pass. Then right, past number two twice, stopping on the third pass, then left passing number 3 once stopping at the second pass.
Then, I'm supposed to turn right until the dial stops at a given number. Normally, the dial starts to get tight as approaching the last number. But, today, no luck.
I'll try the number-off by half thing and see what happens.

Your safe operates exactly reverse from what I posted. That's okay. On your first number, spin the dial more than 4 times to completely clear the combination. Turn it right 5 times and then stop. The rest of your instructions are correct, but on the last turn to the right, the dial should stop itself (Some do it at zero).0 -
I sell liberty safe and have had this happen a number of times. Try take 2 or 3 numbers off plus or minus it should work then and the second number in the combo. 0 -
The first number of my browning was one number off. It was a pain until I figured it out.
I always go about a half number pass.0 -
With the door open remove the cover plate over the back of the combination. Then observe what the wheels are doing and how many turns
to line up each wheel.
You may find the slots center better one or two numbers off.
You may also want to shoot some gun oil in there to smoothen up the action.0 -
Well, I give up. Thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried them all. I think I've tried the combination 100 times today.
I finally wrote an email to Liberty asking them what my next move is. The safe is 3 weeks old. I have all the paper work locked in the safe - including serial number.
It sounds strange to keep that paper in there - it's required to get information from the company. But, it's not good to leave the serial number/combination laying around the house either.
It will be interesting to know what their next move is. My warranty says the lock will be replace if found defective. But, I wonder who has to pay for the removal of the old lock and installation of the new lock?
Hopefully Liberty will recognize the value of a satisfied customer. We'll see - I'll keep you posted.

Liberty is a good company, they will send a locksmith out to your house to see whats going on. I hope they don't have to drill it open, as that could take seven or eight hours! The centurion safes are made in China, I have one and the relocker fired on it. The locksmith had to drill a small hole to move the relocker out of the way. What a pain in the butt!

The same thing happened to me it was a slipped what-ever-what-ch-ma-callit. They fixed it no problem. 0 -
My Liberty (push-button lock) won't open unless the door handle is halfway between open and close. I push it firm to the right, then firm to the left, and then leave it between. Works everytime. 0 -
I saw a video of a guy getting into a gunsafe in two minutes with a fire axe.
He punched a hole in the right place on the side, reached inside to cut the matting on the door,
and fiddled with the lock to open the safe.
That said, I had a Liberty and liked it fine. The LT13 [now the 17 is the smallest Centurion].
Liberty will send a guy to open the safe. Bummer you can't open it.0 -
One thing on my safe is to continue to move the dial while doing the combination. If I stop or hesitate it will not open . 0 -

liberty safes are very good safes. i have a friend who has one and never had a problem. i have a Fort Knox and if you miss a number by one it will not open, the combination is dead on. 0 -
As far as combo's, I write 1 number down in 3 different places in the house just in case I have a senior moment cause I have several safes and get dazed and confused occasionaly [:D] 0 -

Yes - their customer service emailed me as soon as they opened today. I called their 800 number and a guy walked me through the process.
As I stated, in the original post, I have the combination and serial number stored on a password protected file on my PC. I didn't remember if I had the serial number, but I did.
Anyway, he told me to try the combination and use #2 - 1. This did not work so he told me to try #2 - 2 and it worked.
I live 30 miles from the nearest town so I'm glad I didn't have to call a lock smith. Score 1 for Liberty.

I don't understand what you mean by #2-1 and #2-2, please explain! I have a centurion safe also and may need this info for future reference!

sorry it too me so long to reply. I'm away from computer access Tue, Wed, and most of Thur. Actually, I have access, but the Net Nazis don't allow me to access any gun sites.
What I meant by #2-1 or #2-2 is this. Given your combination as #1-#2-#3, I stopped 1 less than number 2 and then 2 less than number 2.
Example: If my combination from the factory was L40-R28-L13. I tried L40-R27-L13. Then I tried L40-R26-L13 and it worked.

I had a spin lock on my first gun safe. It failed twice. I put an electronic pushbutton on it and had no problems after that. Now all three of my gun safes have the pushbutton keypad. 0 -
mine has to fully closed, to the left, the after the code is entered turn to right to open.
get a digital lock.,..............0 -

The Locksmith must be makeing $150 on that deal, 'cause the keypad locks only cost $150.

My cost on a Digital combo from liberty is only 75.00 anf they are easy to put in 0
