Price of a dog
How much is too much to pay for a pet? This would be an animal that I would eventually use in a breeding program to sell some pups.

I know folks that have paid close to $5k for a good gripe. Depends on breed and the dog's lineage. History of hereditary disease, bone/hip structure, ability to throw big litters, performance attributes all come in to play. What you asked is akin to "How much is too much to pay for a car"? Well is it a Hyundai or Rolls Royce? 0 -
My wife & I raise Aust Shepherds, We sell only a few & those go to Very Very Choice homes.
Our prices for Show Quality pups start at $2500.oo for Males, & $3500.oo for females.
The bloodline is Barnstomer on 1 side & Three Ring Circus on the other,
They are the #1 & @2 ranked Aussies for wins in the show ring {ASCA} in the world.
Our pet puppies sell at a starting price of $500.oo & papers will be branded as NOT A BREEDER / puppys whose parents papers are branded as such can not be reg.
We warranty all puppys health & that they are from working stock & if properly trained will work stock, we include a list of trainers with each pup, also we req. the new owner / parent to take their new puppy to their vet for a total health exam, within 7 days of sale. we want only healthy, sound, & quality & will settle for nothing less.

I paid $250 for Sam. Dawnie paid $400 for Buster. They are good dogs, but that is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a dog. A friend had an English bulldog he paid about a grand for. Now, that was really ridiculous.
Then there is Molly, who was found on a parking lot. Free. And a very good dog.
If I ever have to replace Sam, I will try to find a shelter dog. If I don't find a suitable shelter dog, I may bite the bullet and buy another Lab.0 -

If you think thats ridiculous, I don't dare tell you what I paid for Dollar, We needed to bring in a new blood line in order to keep the line breeding down a little.
I dont think to much of line breeding, I call it in-bred
But most big kennels push it as a sales point.

My dad was fond of German Shorthairs. His hunting was primarily Pheasants. He'd get pups for $200-$500, but then they went to hunting school and the bill there would be a few thousand dollars over about 2 years.
We had a champion lined Samoyed that was $100 thirty-five years ago, and six years ago we got a Malemute-Wolf for $200. The Wolf is a house dog that is very sociable with those he likes and very discouraging for others to come within sight of the house.0 -
Breeding can be expensive too -- there's more to it than just buying a pair of dogs and letting them go at it (if you want quality dogs, anyway). I know one owner that spent $35k last year between shows and advertising for one of her dogs (male stud dog).

The breeds that are wanted now are NOT pure....the "designer" dogs are wanted and ppl are paying big money for them...
What is a "designer" dog? Mixed breed, like terri-poo pom-poo, pom-chi, labradoodle, puggles just to name a few...
These cross breeds are bringing anywhere from 500 and up...Boss wife raises dogs (yorkies) and they usually start at 1000, but the big trend is the designer dog and if you cross a maltese with a yorkie you will get 1500 for them..
The cross breeds are hitting the media as the dog of choice now....the pure bred lines are not good, too many problems with the dogs, BUT if you take say a lab and breed it to a poodle (labradoodle) you get the best of both breeds, ...Trying to breed out hip problems, knee problems etc...
Who would think a cross breed would be worth more than a purebred...but that is exactly what is happening now..0 -

You are on the money, the labradoodle, the puggle, and a bunch of others! I looked for about a year before I found Barney, and the designer dogs are all over the market! The only one that makes any sense to to me is the poodle cross breeds, the poodle hair does not shed so for people with allergies, it is a good thing.[:)]

For a pet go to the pound. For a working dog about $1,000. For a dog to start a buisness (breeding) about $2,000. Most dogs can fill any two if the three roles. 0 -
I've seen collies go for $5000. Nuts in my opinion but thats what she gets for them. I like the free kind.

My wife and I raise Brittanies. We get 250.00 for females, 200.00 for males. I have people call year round wanting to know when we'll have another litter. We have a litter every other year. I like haveing pups but don't want to be in the puppy business. 0 -

Mine just turned seventeen. She was just a few weeks old when I got her from the pound. They really pushed her on me as they were already

I have a male chihuahua and until recently a female Pyrenese . When she was in heat you should have seen him try to breed her. It was a hoot. Lucky ankles can't get pregnant . But it makes you wonder what the pups would look like.

Back about 80' or so I paid $400. for a Great Dane stud. In the
early 70's I knew of someone that gave 30k some for a red bone hound,
but that hound was booked til death at $300. per.
I raised Great Danes for about twenty years, and like most breeds
their popularity fluxuated. I had an excellent line going, and the
best stud known(to me). Sold all my stock when my health failed
about 15yrs ago, but still get calls wanting to know if I have
anything from that line.0 -
obviously you guys know nothing about breeding, and selling dogs, pets maybe, but dogs are like horses, if you get them tittled the price of their litter can double, in some cases triple, my dog will get 1,500 just for stud fee 0 -

I payed $1000+ for my Rottweiler,..had papers a mile long,....best damn dog I have ever had. he was a 155lb teadybear,...but make the wrong move around the family,....and he was on point[}:)] He slept on my side of the bed for 10yrs,..and when my son was born he immediately began to sleep at the foot of the crib. Inherently inteligent dogs,..and very family oriented. Never regret that money at all. Pure German Rotty,..black and mahogeny,..not an in-bred american version,...thus the price[;)] 0 -

I feel "designer dogs" are here for a reason, and that reason being???? ppl dont want the pure lines anymore, pure breeds have problems..
Cross bred dogs are good, mixed breeds are better and the dog you rescue from a shelter or a stray are the absolute best you can ever hope to get...
Dogs have papers, cats have papers, so what????? most times you have to sign an agreement to neuter/spay the animal so that leaves out breeding....and if you want to breed, you can end up with a whole new set of problems...its not all easy money...0 -
a good papered dog, coming from a good kennel, is as important as the breed itself, a dog is only is as good as it's parents, i will pay for the proof that their parents are proven to do what i want my dog to do, and my dog is not just a pet
thousands of hours in training are not free, you do not want a dog that will fail on you after time and money spent

Not all papered dogs are pure bred. Paper on a dog means nothing without a concientious breeder. Anybody considering a breeding program should contact the breed specific owners club and ask for recomedations. A good breeder will not breed within a line even suspected of maladies such as hip dysplatia or cerabelar ataxia to name two.
On your second statement you are spot on. It's not easy money. First there's the cost of good quality breeding stock. Then there are licensing fees, (Kansas as I recall requires a breeders license). Then after your dog is impregnated and if your doing it properly, there are numerous visits to the Vet for health checks and sonograms.And God forbid there should be late term complications, x-rays may be needed and a possible C-Section to save the pups the mother or both.
I'm appaled at the number of people who start a breeding program as a source of added income with no thought for the blood line of the chosen breed.
Don't misunderstand me folks. If someone simply wants a pet Please go to the pound and save a life. Given proper training and environment that dog will be just as obedient, loving and protective of your children as a purebred.0 -

The point of that statements was "so who are you trying to impress with papers?...makes no diff to the dog or cat"....and yes I know not all are papered...
Before one can sell a dog in Florida, you must have a health certificate, and they usually run about 100 bucks, and are good for a very short length of time...if it runs out before you sell the dog, get another one...its law...0
