5..count 'em...FIVE

Highball
COONS..in my back yard...looting the dam cat food...that I dispise, you understand.
Dam things came running to the light. sitting up and BEGGING like a dog..I assume telling me by god thee wasn't enough for ALL to share in the largese...and by god get some MORE food out there...

Half grown, they were...geeze..decisions, decisions...

    I have a feral cat living under the barn it was eating the cat food left from the other 4 barn cats, that pissed me off. I placed a chicken bone in the live trap with murderous intent. Next morning; 10-22 in hand I found the cat trapped in the cage. It was whining and crying, skeert all to hell and back. I took the cage and placed the barrel up to the cat. It was whining all pitiful curled in the corner of the cage.

    I put the rifle down and opened the cage, letting him go with a big grin on my face. He comes to visit at night, playing with the other cats. I see him as I sit on the front porch. He sure plays with a twinkle in his eye. No way to tell the sex of him(?). it is still wild as hell but I could not kill the poor thing. It just wanted some dinner and a place to sleep under the barn. I guess 70 acres is room enough for me and five cats. A couple of bucks a month is not too much out of my pocket to let it live.

    I didn't think I had to tell anyone what a possum was. Of course around here all the yankees think a possum is an animal seen on the road that has a flat head with two eyes on the same side.

    I don't kill wild animals just to kill.

    My dog has messed up a couple oppossums, one had a side ripped open and entrails hanging out. A 22CB to the head took care of him. And I still felt bad as he was a young'n. My dog also roughed up a full grown one a year ago. I killed him as well.

    I have quite a few oppossums and raccoons around here. They get in my trash occasionally, but I don't eat em and they aren't a nuisance(sp?) unless they get into it with the dog or cause some sort of damage.

    I also don't coyote hunt for the sport. My buddies dogs are getting messed up pretty badly sometimes. When they do, I go out and try to even the score.

    I can't kill animals... even pests. I enjoy most of the critters that wander around the backyard, like squirrels, raccoons and possums (and I live in the city) and the ones I don't like so much I either put up with them or trap them and relocate them.

    My dog and the neighbor's dogs keep the critters aruond here under control. I do not like to kill anything, seen too much I guess[:)]

    Just a bunch of rabbits and a hand full of squirrels around my neighborhood. No opossums or racoons, thank God. I have seen a little red fox trotting down the sidewalk a couple of times early in the morning. Probably feeding on all the fat docile bunnies in the area.

    Highball, I am sure by now that you know I am a biologist and an animal lover. The only animals I shoot are for food. That said, I learned long ago that largess for raccoons only ever leads to more familiarity by more raccoons. Started feeding two down the hill from the house I was renting. Gradually moved the bowl up to the patio, and then up on the balcony behind the house which had a glass wall. We could watch them from inches away every night. It was wonderful. So much so, that soon there were 8 of them pooping everywhere, turning over the trash can, fighting smearing food on the glass. Had to reverse the course of the food bowl, back to the bottom of the hill, and then wish them well as they found food on their own. I suggest you feed the cat indoors!

    I can't kill very easily anymore either.
    Just Pigeons, Jackrabbits and Coyotes. I don't even kill Rattlesnakes.

    Like Grandpa one time: They had several barn cats too many, and one had another litter. Gramps was gonna knock em in the head, and went and found a suitable stick. He was holding them head down, and when he'd swing the stick, his other hand would involuntarily raise the kitten. After ?doz. tries he realized he just couldn't do it.lol

    That wild cat could make all your other cats very sick, as wild ones aren't vaccinated for any diseases.

    tHESE HERE ain't house cats..just cats that have been dumped out here in the 'country'..'because somebody will feed them'...Ya..theres a sucker born every second.

    I think maybeso Hedog gave me the incentice to set out the live trap and see in I can resettle those coons 3 miles West..on the banks of a nice creek...

    I have been known to relocate a critter, or three.
    Matter of fact, I just got back from such an excursion.
    I kept telling "it" that he(?) wasn't worth the gas it takes.
    Told him that a 22 round would be a LOT cheaper.
    He seemed to hang on my every word............NOT. [:D]

    I give 'em 2 nights and they'll be back. Besides coon meat ain't bad, and you could make ya a warm hat, winters comin'!!

    Wull..now the tide is sorta turning towards a 1 cent car'tige..the litle bustards were born up in the attic..I heard them rumbling around up there.
    The walnut tree that I planted 20 years ago got big..reaches plenty high enough for the 23 foot reach to the eaves..and they use use it as a superhighway.
    I thought nothing about 23 feet being 'high'...20 years ago...and getting up there today has become a bit of a problem

    Compassion is not Pusillanimous. It would be if the Cat was injured or suffering. Bruce, if you were my neighbor, you would be getting mega baked goods. Or cat food.

    HEY...What about ME ??? Do you think I was standing on my back steps with my....uhhhh..peace beads in my hand ?
    Don't you think the sights on my .45 were nicely covering the space between those beady little eyes that were watching me ?

    Surely you don't think I go outside investigating loud, unexplained noises like I was a novice, here..???
