Drive-In Movie

Was in Granbury, Texas last night, and the kiddo and wife and I went to a DRIVE-IN MOVIE!

It has been at least 35 years since I went to one. I can't even remember seeing one from the road in years.

Anyway, it was packed. They showed two kid movies, so the atmosphere was family oriented. We raised the hatch on the SUV and backed toward the screen, pillows, blankets, and a lot of Halloween candy!

One of the things that has changed is the sound system. Now instead of putting that little metal speaker in your window, you just tune in the audio on your car's FM radio!

The other thing that changed was the price. $18 a car.

What a walk down memory lane. Sorry to you youngsters who have never been to one...

    We've got a 6 screen one about 10 mins from the house.

    Scottsdale 6 has been there as long as anyone can remember. It looks like it's been there since the 1950s. It's run-down, dirty, in a poor state and staffed by idiots.

    But there's nothing like the Drive-In. It's just a blast.

    We went to the drive in all the time when I was a kid in the fifties and sixties. Six kids in a big Ford station wagon, it was great!

    Going to the drive-in used to be a pretty big deal. Some people even watched the movie. [:D] The TAR-HEAL and MIDWAY made pretty good hamburgers too.

    There used to be drive-ins all over the place, but I don't know of any now. There is a field between here and Danville that looks like it used to be a drive-in, but that's about as close as we have now. It was fun while it lasted. [:)]

    Belleville Illinois has a multiplex. OK but the gravel lot is loudand dusty.

    There is a single screen in Earlville Illinois. Grass lot with rows of little knolls to drive up on so your car is pitched up towards the screen. FM radio also.

    We have only one left in our local area and it's always packed. They have two screens and do one heck of a business. Saw Jaws and Towering Inferno at a drive-in when I was a kid in dad's Vega.

    You can still fit 3 people in the trunk of a new car, but you have to remove their legs and arms first......... woops wrong thred[:I]

    the good thing is that there is a per-car fee not a per-person fee, so it dosent matter if I toss 15 people into a commuter van, it is still going to cost the same as 2 people in a miata, not as much fun, but it cost the same[;)]

    We have a drive-in here. Just part of a small town I guess. Our's cost $5 per adult. Under 12 gets in free. Easy enough to pack the young kids into the church van and have a fun night on the cheap.
    They make the absolute best cheeseburgers here. The burger line is always LOOOONG!

    Guy here in Abilene bought an old drive-in and restored it. Has two screens and stays pretty busy. Lots of fun, except during the summer when it's hot or after a rain and the mosquitos are out.

    I love drive-ins Never found me a babe that did though...Don't think they exist.. But if you all have a sister that does at a reasonal distance send me a pic and e-mail...oh yea and a list of her bad habits to see if they match up with mine!!

    I have one about 20 minutes from my house that shows 2 movies for 7.50 a person. I love it there.

    We still have one here in se Ohio..sometimes the fog from the river shuts it down..they always say hold on to your ticket stubs and you can come back..[;)][:D]..Loko

    Got one roughly twenty miles from here -- in the vicinity of Osgood, IN. Has the FM sound system and all -- but I haven't been in a number of years. They always show a double feature of a new release and something on its way out.

    Used to be the only way my parents took us to the movies. I barely knew theaters existed until I was nearly in my teens.

    When I was 16-17 years old I worked as the projection guy in a drive in for a couple summers. The best job I ever had!

    These were old time projectors with the big mirror and arc sticks. They were a blast to run and work on. Changed reels every 20 minutes between the two projectors-anyone know what the change over dots are when you watch a (old) movie?

    I was the only one there at closing time. Say lots of nekkid bodies in cars and wild parties and fights. Used to put some music on the speakers and let my friends in to party after the movie was over.

    Used to have the Cinderella Drive-In here in Aurora...in the end it was torn down...saw the video on TV...tied the top of the screen to a tractor and just drove off...

    in Omaha, we had the Golden Spike out on 114th and Dodge st., about at the edge of town. behind the screen there was lots of trees, a trailer park, and running between those was a long, dark, dirt road that went to nowhere. beyond that was just farmland. we used to ride our bikes all around that trailer park and try to sneak into the drive in. cold, dark and windy in the fall, but it was a blast. first time in, we saw The Road Warrior. one of the guys in the neighborhood, 15 or 16 at the time, was good at karate so they hired him to patrol the fence between the road and the drive in (with his nunchuks) to keep people from sneaking in. one time Otis XII was there handing out 6-packs of pop, and he gave us TWO each because he knew my mom. later on, when we got old enough to know people with cars, that was really something to actually go there with somebody driving a car, sneak in beer and -maybe- we'll find some chicks! night life was so much more adventuresome when we were young and silly and didn't know anything!

    now it's a bright and shiny "business park" and golf course in what's becoming the middle of town. you would have never guessed it was there. those days are gone forever.
