My buddy George and I were down in Mexico. We ran a roadblock at night.
The Mexican soldiers came after us in an unmarked car. In two miles they passed us, and did a skidding stop so that they blocked the road. This was way out in the country, very dark, but the soldiers' car was right in our headlights as George stopped our car.
The lieutenant got out of the driver's seat, and pointed a 1911 Colt .45 right between my eyes. He was about ten feet away. I had my hands raised to the sky, and I didn't move.
I swear, that hole looked a lot bigger than .45, looked more like 3 inches wide.
The private had jumped out and pointed a FN/FAL at George, and I heard him rack the slide back.
Wasn't our night to go, for they didn't fire.

Back in 1984, I was 13 years old.. I went to visit my Dad in Little Rock every summer. I would stay at his house by myself during the day while he was at work. One day, two fellows rang the doorbell. I answered the door and the guys asked if they could mow the yard. I told them that I would have to check with my Dad. They stood around for a few minutes and talked to me. Before they left, they said for me to call my dad and they would return in a few minutes. Sure enough, they returned in about 15 minutes and rang the doorbell. When I opened the door, they asked if I had talked to my Dad. I said "No, he is supposed to call me." About that time, one of the guys put a gun in my face. They backed me into the living room, put a cloth sack over my head and covered my whole body with a winter coat. Needless to say, I thought I was going to die. I was crying like a baby.....even though I was 13 years old. They managed to rob us of a lot of stuff in about 20 minutes. I still remember to this day, one of the guys kept walking over to me and saying "I'm watching you." I stayed under that coat for a total of 50 minutes (even though they were only there for 20). I will never forget that ordeal.

Perhaps someday I will be able to talk about my epiphany, but so far I have only been able to share it with my wife whom I believe was part of the message.

My cousin once cooked a meal that smelled like death. Does that count?

I once had an old Gypsie woman threaten to place a curse on me, but she relented when I gave her the seniors discount on her purchase.[:o)]

Back in '65 I was working on an ambulance in St. Louis county. We got a call at 3:00am that came in as an "OB" meaning Obstentics or a baby coming on the double. So we rush to the house and a woman, not pregnant is standing out in the street. The call should have been "OBS" for Observation - a nut case. We called the local police on our radio and were told to wait for them to show, about 5 mins. The driver told me to walk down the driveway to the back of the house to make sure the nut job does not leave by the back door. When I got to the rear corner of the house, there he is with a double barrel shotgun pointed at my head about 5 feet away. Looked like a sewer pipe in the glow of the alley lights. He asked me where I was going and I told back out front. He said that would be a good idea. Needless to say the walk back to the front was a little scary, me thinking he was going to pull the trigger at any time. The urgency to the police were relayed in another radio conversation with the cops. They showed up plenty quick after that. As it turns out the shotgun was unloaded but you could not tell that from my viewpoint. I wanted to be taken back to the office and another ambulance took the looney to the bin. Took me a couple of days to feel normal on another OBS call.

I have almost died on motercycles a half dozen times or so. Like when you can play it in your mind like a dvd in slow motion. God is good.

My uncle (still alive) related this story to my father.

During the Korean war, he was walking down a street with two of his buddies, he was in the middle. Two snipers took out both his friends, right and left. To this day he has no idea why he was not next.

    Let's see. 2800 plus flight hours in a '46. I got a few.

    5 Combat Action Ribbons
A whole bunch of Air Medals

    2 Class Alpha mishaps,
    1 Class Bravo

    1 Gear up landing in a CH-53

More than a few write-ups with more holes in one side of the aircraft than the other.

    2 things I learned:
    1) I am mortal.
    2) It is very difficult to knock down a helicopter.

saw the reaper 4 times that I can remember, but it just wasn't my time to go with him ( thanks, God!)
makes me appreciate the time I have been using since those visits, and it's kinda hard to feel that life is tough or unfair when you
    are given that many extensions.
shot at, once; near-drowned, once; rockfall, once; oncoming car sweved into my lane at 50 mph, once.
my hat is off to all you guys that posted here, and survived your encounters with way more damage than I .
this has been one of the few gems on GB that was actually worth reading- thanks all!

I was on a runaway wild horse last week. It would not stop no matter what I did. I just held on for dear life shouting for it to stop but the horse did not slow down. I started to slip off the horse and my leg got caught in the saddle and stirrup so I was riding upside down bouncing and bouncing so close to death. I thought I was a goner for sure.

Thank God the Wal-mart manager pulled the plug. I regret payig that quarter though.

In my post, I had a Mexican lieutenant pointing a .45 at my head from ten feet away.
Nothing clarifies the mind like having a big bore gun pointed at you at close range.
