CB stuff (Citizens Band)...
From another thread, the subject of CBs was raised.
I was an on-the-road salesman for much of the 70s and early 80s, when CBs were in their prime, so I used it a lot.
Anyone have any CB tales to share ??

That was why I started going into Ham radio more than CB when I was driving truck.0 -

I was selling speed equipment and custom (mag) wheels to resellers - tire stores and speed shops. I really enjoyed doing that, matter of fact, it was the most fun I ever had at any job.
GRD - I haven't had a CB set for years. Were a lot of other truckers using amateur radio ??

More and more are going that way.
They use the CB on the open hwy for road reports and such but for more regular talk the use the Ham bands.
CB got messed up after they deregulated it were you didn't need a licence anymore!0 -
Truckers I have run with recently all use cell phones. Kinda takes the fun out of modulating on the boulevard. The Winterhawk, we gone, bye bye. 0 -

When involved with the trucking industry I had a high powered unit in my pickup, and still insist on having a CB in my vehicles. I have a nice base unit here at the house, w/upper and lower side bands, but seldom play with it anymore... 0 -
I used to be knowen as the b-ville bear.had and still do Golden eagle base station and mobile both had sideband on em.Had a ball in them days.Sure did.Thanks,Paul 0 -

Now you know CB was messed up long before the FCC dropped the license requirement. The main reason the FCC did drop the license requirement is because about half of the people using CB never bothered to even get a license and the FCC didn't have the resources to do anything about it. Just a little FYI from the past.0 -
I remember my Dad's license number was KWP1344 when I was a kid. We had a base unit and one in the pickup and all the tractors and grain trucks/ combine, ect. to communicate while we were farming. It got pretty popular then and everyone was going nuts and soon they deregulated them, because no one was getting licenses anyway. Still remember hearing reports of the FCC being in the area monitoring the use, but don't remember anyone getting fined for using one without a license. 0 -

CBing got messed up when the price of a decent radio dropped to an affordable price of around $129.00 in the Mid 70'5.
I can remember just about everyone around here ran out and got one when they sold for that price.
You can also still find wires strung through trees going to the top of hills from that period.0 -
I bought a new '75 Monza Town Coupe 350 and installed an Audiovox in-dash AM-FM/cassette/40 channel CB. Very cool. When a CB signal over-rode the squelch, it would shut the radio or tape off and let you hear the CB broadcast, through the car speakers.

Henry - I had a '70 Maverick 2 door race car that I swapped a 289 into with a 4 speed, before you could get a V8 in one. I drove it from my place in Duarte to Irwindale drag strip with open headers, on slicks, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Those were the days, my friend...I thought they'd never end...

The CB's were better and stronger before the 40 channels came out. I had a 23 channel Robyn that would reach way out there. When I had my truck, the CB was the most entertaining piece of equipment I had. My handle was "Little Big Man". Don 0 -
--[8D]--Big Doug, I've used COBRA 40 ch cbs since the 1970's , in all my 4wd's, I sometimes get to talk to truckers and always use it when in the Sierra's-Emergency channels 9/19, I've never had to use, but who knows--

I have a johnson CB that you talk in to like an old rotary phone, I don't remember what kind of antenna was up but it was huge and sat on an old television antenna tower... Had a lot of fun with that..
My neighbor complained that she could hear me on her phone, ftw..
that was well over 15 years ago, but I still do have the old CB heres a pic.

I still have a Cobra LTD25 and LTD29 that work good. I went by zookeeper 0 -

The primary radio in the truck is a Galaxy 66 tuned and peaked, that will dead-key 10watts out the back door. I've got a Cobra and a Uniden that I use for backup, if the other one needs any work.
There's no linear on this one, you can actually accomplish more with some real intense modulation.

Nowadays, I use a Shadio Rack Walkie Talkie with a single trucker antenna on my bike. The radio runs through my helmet intercom system. When Mrs. Sahagan and I are talking to one another on the bike, and on the road, the CB will over-ride us. This particular radio also has 7 weather alert bands that over-ride the CB. That helps us miss those pesky thunderstorms ahead of us (or let us find a motel room in time).
When traveling in our car, I have an RCI-2970dx that has been 'optimized'. That means it tops out at 150 watts, and also has 10 and 12 meter bands, for which I am not licensed to use. I've studied for the test, but with so doggoned many hobbies, haven't found time to take it yet.
What the radio also has, is the 11 meter band. Called the Outlaw band, its very active during the correct times of the 11 year sunspot cycle. This band isn't licensed, and when talking on it, you're in violation of FCC regs. But it's the best thing going radio-wise, so long as you don't get so powerful that you're interrupting major airport radio communications.
And harkening back to the '70's, Mrs. Sahagan and I were tooling along some Louisiana highways in a '72 Vega (remember those?), on our way to PANCHO'S MEXICAN BUFFET restaurant in Baton Rouge. I was very helpfully giving up-to-date smokey reports to other CB'ers on the road. After making a couple of reports after immediately meeting the smokies on the road, we heard this following conversation, verbatim (it's one I'll never forget), "Louisiana State Police Unit number 11, this is Louisiana State Police Unit number 29, and I want the fellow driving that blue Vega to know WE KNOW WHERE WE ARE, and we know WHERE HE IS TOO."
That ended my smoky reports for the nonce, you can betcha.

Tricky Dick; the Sinister Minister here; using a TRC-465 Sidebander with unlocked clarifier, NDS RF Pre-amp, Aries SWR450 antenna matchbox, Commander 1500 Class AB "modulator", an' a Rat Shack power mike. Used to have a ball on 2AM, 13AM, 28, 32, 37USB, 12, 14, 33LSB.
Still use most of what's listed every day to warn truckers of road conditions, help tourists, and shoot skip all over the world!
I drove a black '74 Monte Carlo (The Wrecktory) with a direct line to God; that's why the antennas point straight up!
