CB stuff (Citizens Band)...

From another thread, the subject of CBs was raised.

I was an on-the-road salesman for much of the 70s and early 80s, when CBs were in their prime, so I used it a lot.

Anyone have any CB tales to share ??

What was your handle ??

Mine was Rocketman.

    I do remember them and I have driven them! It was an art form to beable to manuver both sticks at the same time![;)][:D]

    KDC4375, Wizard...Still have the Japanese version President Grant, 10 Watts output, 40 channels, with USB/LSB, to a HotStik, tuned for the "double nickel" channel 55, and a powermic.

    Went on and became a Ham Radio Op - KD6RGZ

    Have driven many Semis, but only in a Container Yard, ("Never over 10 MPH" - HA!), or through city streets and Freeways, delivering and/or picking up a Container Crane Spreader or parts - did this on occasion for over twenty years. Guess that Ten Mile Radius would be called "Very Short Haul" - Never had a citation, and only one time bent anything - fortunately it was in the Yard. Using a Hustler, going to and from the port areas, never needed a License, as Port Rules allow it. Did it in California and in Washington State.

    In the UP where I spent some of my youth, CB was a nescesity, and all the old guys had their scanners going 24/7 to listen for the latest hunting or boating incident. The loggers used them alot too. Later on when I lived on a farm on HWY 41, I used the Handle: Tin-Man (of course I was about 12 and treated the CB like a BBS War-Board)[:D]

    We had a truck boss at the last place I worked whose handle was "Tennessee".
    All the drivers referred to him as "Tennessippi" over the cb.
    He had a permanently chapped ass.

    I hauled fuel-oil from a terminal at the MOBIL refinery in Paulsboro NJ.To my step-dads tank farm.The truck was a "B-61" MACK.
    You'd hook your left arm through the steerin-wheel, and drive w/the crook of your elbow, while jammin gears w/BOTH HANDS...So. we got some OLD-SCHOOL "DOUBLE-CLUTCHERS" in here!!
    My cousin has a CB in his jeep, with like a 1000W LINEAR on it.2 batteries and a 75AMP alternator...I've heard him talk to S.Carolina, from S.Joizy[:0]

    Had an American Indian friend who had a 2KW linear on his rig - he talked to Australia on it from his house in San Diego...

    One Day, (this was in the mid 70's) a van with lots of antennas drove up to his house, and FCC officers cam in, confiscated his rig, and when the court battles were over, my buddie had lost his rig, the amp, his cars (Both had amps on their radios) and his house!!!

    He moved to the Reservation, declared bankruptcy so he didn't have to pay for the house. Kept his job, and within a year, he had .......Another Rig, another Amp, and was back talking to Australia!!!

    When I was on the road selling, my territory was pretty much along I5 - the superslab - and old 99, from Bakersfield to Seattle. Many nights would find me rolling on that road, mentally whipped, and trying to stay awake.

    There is no doubt in my mind that the truckers on the radidio kept me alive just by talking to me and keeping me awake. Sometimes we'd stop someplace and have a coffee "break" and shoot the bull for awhile.

    The local CB clubs would set up at rest stops and serve free coffee for a "safety break".

    I'd smoke up the road running 100, and the truckers would look after me.

    It was a nice, friendly feeling with faceless guys who I would mostly never meet.

    Kinda like an internet forum.

    Best, most fun job I would ever have.

    Times change, but I'd sure like to be able to time travel back to then, sometimes.

    Now my choice is Vhf 136-174 mhz dual band,ani id and with scrambling.
    But u cant talk to Australia w em .
    Antennas ..Maybe a vertical polarized stacked bobtail curtain.
    Humm but i do like the neat Moxxon antennas .
    On the car well i should build myselfe a stacked j pole

    But that one looks pretty much like a bobtail...But anyhow, a lil bit of experimenting is just fun.

    That was why I started going into Ham radio more than CB when I was driving truck.

    Aint THAT the truth. And used to be responsible for alot of it.
    I used get on the CB as I passed one of the big truckstops and say:
    "Breaker 1-9, may I have your attention please. This is the one and only Buck-Naked from Los Angles California (I'm from Okla.). And I am the Worlds Greatest Truckdriver.
    And I'd like to announce that I just parked my rig at this here (x-brand) truckstop and will be in the coffee shop shortly. So that all my fans can meet me and get my autograph."
    I'd be miles down the road and could still hear em hollerin "What makes YOU the world's greatest you SOB?"
