Do you "tip" at a buffet?
I always tip (if the waiter/waitress deserves it) at a restaurant where I'm being waited on---taking my order---serving my food, etc. However, I do not tip at restaurants where buffets are offered and I'm waiting on myself. Do you?

i tip in the 30% range if service is good, most buffets where they do have a roaming waitress i usually tip just a few bucks

At a nicer restaurant I will tip 30% for good service or 20% for decent/average service.
At a buffet the tip falls in the 20% for good or 10% for crappy (typical) service.0 -
I usually give 2-3 dollars, We went to a mexican place around here, it was GOOD, and i went with my uncle who is a big tipper, I tossed 3 in just because he could carry 8 plates on his arm without any help from his other arm [:0][:0][:0]

I always tip the people who take care of the area. Its hard to work in any kind of "food" service....not only is the job hard....but they take into account the tips when they get their salaries. Its not fair really....to pay someone less than minimum wage because of an "imaginary figure" they may (or may not) be paid in tips. 0 -

Did you know that the base pay for waiter and waitresses in the typical Chinese Buffet is $2.13 @ hr.? They have to pre-bus their tables and work for one to two hours free doing side work after they go "off the floor". It's a hard row to hoe, and a really good professional waitress is a remarkable, hard-working and practically self-employed contractor. After about two days, I'd be going downtown for grabbing some SOB by the throat and bouncing him around on the slab for a few minutes!0 -
Buffet I go to everyday for lunch I never tip. I walk in when they are busy, grab a to-go buffet dish and fill with food. Take it to my desk in the building, walk back in, grab a cup from the bar and fill with coke/pepsi. Leave. The waitress never says anything about it, she just looks at the holster with the six inch gun [}:)] and the shiny badge I wear. One of these days I will have to thank the owner of the place for my daily free lunches. 0 -

I tip anywhere reusable plates are used where you sit to eat. Someone serves me by bringing a drink and cleaning up my mess therefore they deserve it. Anything less would make me a thief of their labor. 0 -

I'd have to agree with you on this one. I kind of got burnt out on the chinese buffets a few years back but they're still hard to beat when you're really hungry. We stop in at the one near here once in a while. Every time I go in there I can't help but feel sorry for the people. Always the same people working. Doesn't matter what day of the week you go in there. I can't stand being in there for much more than 45 minutes and these people are there probably 10 hours a day, 7 days a week! I can't imagine having to stand around and watch HUGE people come in non-stop and make absolute pigs of themselves. I really have no idea how some people can eat so much food. It's like people feel like they're getting ripped off if they aren't as gluttonous and wasteful as they can possibly be.
We've went there before and seen a family at a table just eating away when we walked in the door. We sit down, end up having a couple plate fulls and I'm stuffed. Sometimes I can barely get desert down. Then I gotta get out of there. Leave a couple bucks for a tip, pay for the meal, walk out the door and there's the same family, new full plates in front of them, eating like they haven't eaten in days! It's unreal.
Yeah, I just don't wanna watch that 7 days a week. I'll leave them a couple bucks out of pitty if not for anything else.0 -

Most waitstaff make half of minimum wage and depend on tips (check your labor laws and this is allowed because they are expected to recieve tips for compensation). Buss boys make minimum wage but sometimes get a percentage of the waitstaffs tips. If they keep my glass full and remove the dirty dishes, they get tipped.0 -

Yeah, sadly, fast food is not cheap. Back in NYC, we had diners that would offer breakfast specials: eggs, bacon or sausage, toast, juice and coffee for one set price. Nowadays, some places charge $1.75 for the coffee on top of the breakfast. Juice is always extra at most places.0 -

The owner and I have an agreement, he has had this same agreement with everybody working security in the building. We come in every once in a while and be visible, we get free lunch. The guy's name is Tony and I just got him one of these mugs this week to thank him for the meals.

Yawarakai, if the owner is that amenable to you, then IMO, a modest tip to the waitress is in order and in good taste. Tony sees a value in your presence and as the owner, he can decide if it's profitable or not. But the waitress is trying to make a living and it's based on tips that she can't control. Even though the meal's not being eaten there, I'd still give her a buck or two but that's just me and my New York style. 0 -
