Did anyone watch it? I'm not a huge Al Gore fan but I was impressed with the film. I thought it did a good job of showing the immediate and real threat of global warming. I haven't had time to look at the 'evidence' refuting his claims but hope to in the near future. If you are dead set agaist the theory of global warming - I encourage you to watch it and if possible tell me it's a load of crap.

Trust me, I wish global warming didn't exist. I wish it was just a figment of some scientists' overactive imaginations. I think the consequences are too serious to shrug it off as liberal BS. As many of the members of Gunbroker are avid outdoorsmen, I think we should be especially protective of our environment. God forbid we support an agenda that isn't strictly conservative.

To fully understand global warming you need to look at the people who follow it. They are all politicians; the scientific community does not feel the same way. The so-called good points in the movie were all lies and fabrications. Here is a bit of reading for you to get that hogwash out of your head.

    TEN MYTHS of Global Warming

MYTH 1: Global temperatures are rising at a rapid, unprecedented rate.

FACT: Accurate satellite, balloon and mountain top observations made over the last three decades have not shown any significant change in the long term rate of increase in global temperatures. Average ground station readings do show a mild warming of 0.6 to 0.8Cover the last 100 years, which is well within the natural variations recorded in the last millennium. The ground station network suffers from an uneven distribution across the globe; the stations are preferentially located in growing urban and industrial areas ("heat islands"), which show substantially higher readings than adjacent rural areas ("land use effects").

There has been no catastrophic warming recorded.

MYTH 2: The "hockey stick" graph proves that the earth has experienced a steady, very gradual temperature increase for 1000 years, then recently began a sudden increase.

FACT: Significant changes in climate have continually occurred throughout geologic time. For instance, the Medieval Warm Period, from around 1000 to1200 AD (when the Vikings farmed on Greenland) was followed by a period known as the Little Ice Age. Since the end of the 17th Century the "average global temperature" has been rising at the low steady rate mentioned above; although from 1940 - 1970 temperatures actually dropped, leading to a Global Cooling scare.

The "hockey stick", a poster boy of both the UN's IPCC and Canada's Environment Department, ignores historical recorded climatic swings, and has now also been proven to be flawed and statistically unreliable as well. It is a computer construct and a faulty one at that.

MYTH 3: Human produced carbon dioxide has increased over the last 100 years, adding to the Greenhouse effect, thus warming the earth.

FACT: Carbon dioxide levels have indeed changed for various reasons, human and otherwise, just as they have throughout geologic time. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased. The RATE of growth during this period has also increased from about 0.2% per year to the present rate of about 0.4% per year, which growth rate has now been constant for the past 25 years. However, there is no proof that CO2 is the main driver of global warming. As measured in ice cores dated over many thousands of years, CO2 levels move up and down AFTER the temperature has done so, and thus are the RESULT OF, NOT THE CAUSE of warming. Geological field work in recent sediments confirms this causal relationship. There is solid evidence that, as temperatures move up and down naturally and cyclically through solar radiation, orbital and galactic influences, the warming surface layers of the earth's oceans expel more CO2 as a result.

MYTH 4: CO2 is the most common greenhouse gas.

FACT: Greenhouse gases form about 3 % of the atmosphere by volume. They consist of varying amounts, (about 97%) of water vapour and clouds, with the remainder being gases like CO2, CH4, Ozone and N2O, of which carbon dioxide is the largest amount. Hence, CO2 constitutes about 0.037% of the atmosphere. While the minor gases are more effective as "greenhouse agents" than water vapour and clouds, the latter are overwhelming the effect by their sheer volume and - in the end - are thought to be responsible for 60% of the "Greenhouse effect".
Those attributing climate change to CO2 rarely mention this important fact.

MYTH 5: Computer models verify that CO2 increases will cause significant global warming.

FACT: Computer models can be made to "verify" anything by changing some of the 5 million input parameters or any of a multitude of negative and positive feedbacks in the program used.. They do not "prove" anything. Also, computer models predicting global warming are incapable of properly including the effects of the sun, cosmic rays and the clouds. The sun is a major cause of temperature variation on the earth surface as its received radiation changes all the time, This happens largely in cyclical fashion. The number and the lengths in time of sunspots can be correlated very closely with average temperatures on earth, e.g. the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period. Varying intensity of solar heat radiation affects the surface temperature of the oceans and the currents. Warmer ocean water expels gases, some of which are CO2. Solar radiation interferes with the cosmic ray flux, thus influencing the amount ionized nuclei which control cloud cover.

MYTH 6: The UN proved that man-made CO2 causes global warming.
FACT: In a 1996 report by the UN on global warming, two statements were deleted from the final draft. Here they are:
    1) "None of the studies cited above has shown clear evidence that we can attribute the observed climate changes to increases in greenhouse gases."
    2) "No study to date has positively attributed all or part of the climate change to man-made causes"

To the present day there is still no scientific proof that man-made CO2 causes significant global warming.

    MYTH 7: CO2 is a pollutant.

FACT: This is absolutely not true. Nitrogen forms 80% of our atmosphere. We could not live in 100% nitrogen either. Carbon dioxide is no more a pollutant than nitrogen is. CO2 is essential to life on earth. It is necessary for plant growth since increased CO2 intake as a result of increased atmospheric concentration causes many trees and other plants to grow more vigorously. Unfortunately, the Canadian Government has included CO2 with a number of truly toxic and noxious substances listed by the Environmental Protection Act, only as their means to politically control it.

MYTH 8: Global warming will cause more storms and other weather extremes.

FACT: There is no scientific or statistical evidence whatsoever that supports such claims on a global scale. Regional variations may occur. Growing insurance and infrastructure repair costs, particularly in coastal areas, are sometimes claimed to be the result of increasing frequency and severity of storms, whereas in reality they are a function of increasing population density, escalating development value, and ever more media reporting.

MYTH 9: Receding glaciers and the calving of ice shelves are proof of global warming.

FACT: Glaciers have been receding and growing cyclically for hundreds of years. Recent glacier melting is a consequence of coming out of the very cool period of the Little Ice Age. Ice shelves have been breaking off for centuries. Scientists know of at least 33 periods of glaciers growing and then retreating. It's normal. Besides, glacier's health is dependent as much on precipitation as on temperature.

MYTH 10: The earth's poles are warming; polar ice caps are breaking up and melting and the sea level rising.

FACT: The earth is variable. The western Arctic may be getting somewhat warmer, due to unrelated cyclic events in the Pacific Ocean, but the Eastern Arctic and Greenland are getting colder. The small Palmer Peninsula of Antarctica is getting warmer, while the main Antarctic continent is actually cooling. Ice thicknesses are increasing both on Greenland and in Antarctica.

Sea level monitoring in the Pacific (Tuvalu) and Indian Oceans (Maldives) has shown no sign of any sea level rise.

I consider myself to be an ardent evironmentalist. However, I am angry that the "global warming" issue has come to mean the ENTIRE evironmental debate and issue.
Personally, I tihnk the "science" of global warming is sketchy at best. Also, I have never heard ANYONE say that global warming is reversable. If its not reversable then what is the point in destroying economies to prevent the unpreventable ?
I am very very very angry how the liberals have hijacked the evironmental debate with the global warming issue. They make it a all or nothing position. They are also rank hypocrities in their lifestyle.

The scientists talking against global warming is simply payed off.
The big companys actually seeks and pays money to scientists that can come up with good reasons against the global warming issue.
Even me with my own eyes can see the changes being really huge over here.
BUT [:)] I DONT MIND AT ALL BEING ABLE TO GROW APPLETREES HERE NOW.
That been just impossible for the last coupple of thousand years around here.Untill now hehe.

There may be little use in fighting the global warming scenario, because of two major issues, 1) the people who are screaming "Global Warming" in the crowded theatre of this nation are deeply invested in having it accepted (not necessarily proven, just accepted) enough to pass laws that will increase taxes on gasoline, fuels, electricity, and thus on down to everything you buy. Get ready for it, some folks will get rich from raking off the top (those mentioned above who are already invested in it) of government sponsored, taxpayer financed programs, while you and I will suffer greatly for it, and for no actual genuine reason and,

    2) it's already accepted in the mainstream, and no mainline media outlet is going to let ANY chance pass to bring it up in reporting and conversation....here's one example from the thread on this very board, called "Six die from brain eating amoeba in lakes" The quote goes, ""This is a heat-loving amoeba. As water temperatures go up, it does better," Beach said. "In future decades, as temperatures rise, we'd expect to see more cases."

Note carefully that last sentence, and how it takes for granted that a scientifically suspect theory (and it's still only a theory, since it is impossible to predict future climatic conditions for a planet whose lifespan is in the billions of years, while our observations are only one ten thousandth of one percent of that lifespan....we really are a stupid lot sometimes, aren't we?) is considered proven, and must be taken into consideration when reporting on something as inane as an amoeba and the deaths it causes. "In future decades, AS TEMPERATURES RISE, we'd expect to see more cases."

Did it ever occur to them to check out amoebas that thrive in cooler temps, and what they're doing to us?

Here is another interesting theory on "global warming" proposed by a meteorologist, as seen in our local paper recently: (C&P- sorry)

ORR: Earth's hot core may be culprit of global warming
    By Chris Orr, Journal correspondent

You live on a planet with a hot interior. Temperatures a few miles below us are hot enough to peel the soles of your shoes in a blink of an eye.

Earlier this month, scientists announced that satellite images show that polar sea ice continues to diminish and that an ice-free passage opened up this summer from Europe to Asia.

Polar ice has melted down to its lowest levels in 40 years. Before satellites hovered above us, we assumed that the ice covered just about everything at the polar latitudes. All we had to rely on for this lack of knowledge before the 1960s was data from occasional expeditions. Today, we can monitor the ice every day.

The polar meltdown has me thinking about how the ocean's temperature has warmed enough to cause it.A

I was never fond of college chemistry and all the stuff about moles. However, I do remember that it takes one calorie of heat to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius. That one calorie of heat can raise one gram of rock a whopping five degrees Celsius. Interestingly, it takes 80 calories to melt one gram of ice.

One other fact I will toss out is that the temperature of water changes much slower than air. A large volume of water is going to lose its heat or gain heat much slower than an equal volume of air - much, much, much slower.

The atmosphere has warmed just a little bit in the past 100 to 150 years -- about one-half of a degree -- and ocean temperatures have warmed in response. The current assumption is that the warmer atmosphere has caused an increase in ocean temperature.

I cannot help but wonder if global-warming scientists are working the theory backwards and that the ocean is actually helping to warm the air.

Which brings me to the Earth's mantle and inner workings: Is it possible that the inside of the planet is warming, or at least there are changes in how close magma is to the ocean floor and that, in fact, is what is warming the oceans?

The interior of this planet is extremely hot. The mantle is 1,100 to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit where it meets the Earth's crust -- the portion of the Earth we live on. About 25 miles separates our feet from these very hot temperatures, but the floor of the ocean is only 7 miles away.

Which would heat the ocean faster if its temperature warmed by one percent? A one percent change in air temperature is about a half of a degree. A one percent change in the temperature of the mantle is somewhere between 10 and 16 degrees.

I am not aware of extensive research into temperature changes in the Earth's mantle and crust under the oceans. A small percentage change there would have a greater impact on ocean temperatures than a small change in the temperature of the air.

Correspondingly, a small change in the temperature of the ocean will have a large impact on the temperature of the air.

Maybe -- just maybe -- we are looking in the wrong closet for the global warming monster.

Al Gore is just another sniveling politician....He uses the debate for his own ends, not because he actually cares.

For every lie that comes out of Al Gore's trap, there are several spit out by the other side. For whatever reason, people around here think that blogs are a good place to find scientific info.

That being said.....the facts are disturbing

    earth.jpg

    20060313_greenland.jpg

Whether or not we're causing it or if there is anything we can do to stop it is up for debate.

My opinion is that we are causing it....but at this point I don't think there is anything that can (reasonably) be done to stop it.

Look at the bright side....if sea levels rise, at least we'll finally be rid of New Orleans

    Warmth. Warm is good!

We look at things through the lens of a human lifetime. Our lifetime is an infinitesimal pimple on a gnats ass in the greater picture of the life of the planet.

500 MILLION YEARS AGO HUMANS COULD NOT SURVIVE WITH THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE EARTH AT THAT TIME.
