Not nearly as much as I used to. Maybe 12 beers a week tops. Most weeks its a lot fewer than that. I'm a social drinker. I can't drink at home. Just doesn't seem right. But I do love a beer with the fellas. Back in my prime I could polish off 5 or 6 pitchers with a double shot of rumpleminze before each pitcher. Makes me sick to think about it.

I consider myself blessed because my Dad, who is my hero, used to tell me "never let the Servant become the Master. The day you wake up thinking about nothing but your recreational 'thing' is the day you have a problem."

So, I've had periods where I drank like crazy. Found my poison, whiskey with diet coke, and drank it like the wells were going to dry up. Then I'd quit for weeks or months. And start back up when I felt like it.

I've had my informal dalliances with a few other substances, but nothing which entailed the use of needles or snorting, and when those dalliances proved pointless, was strong enough to just walk away.

Today, I'm trying to lose weight, lower my cholo and tryglicerides and blood sugar so I don't end up diabetic. I really hate needles. To this end I've curbed my drinking quite a bit.

Still, there's nothing like a shot of cold Knob Creek, or some Creek and Diet Coke (with splenda). Then I gave up much of my caffiene intake (not good when you shake like Michael J. Fox because you have downed 15 diet cokes during the day) and diet coke tastes terrible to me unless it's got whiskey in it, since I drink Iced Tea in place of the soda.

A half bottle of Black & Tan a night will put on weight so it's just an occasional thing except at parties when I'll have a couple of dark ales or gin & tonics. Strangely, gin & tonics sit better with me than wine, multiple beers or hard liquor.
Booze was never a problem with me, cigarettes were.

In summer of 1985, I started dating a Catholic girl (I am Baptist). We went on a couple of canoe trips on area river. I somewhat sipped on a wine cooler. Later that summer, we went to an amusement park. She had a beer and I thought, "Why not?". So I tried one - er, part of one. I couldn't stand the smell of it, much less the taste of it. We came home and I thought about it all week. I decided I wasn't going to change so I couldn't expect her to change. Next weekend, we went out to a state park, walked around a while and I called it quits.

Only time in my life I have consumed any type of alcohol. Also have never smoked, chewed or dipped any type of tobacco. It has just never been my thing.

I quit in March 1989 when a close family member came to me and said he was an alcholic (which was well know to me already) I told the person at that time that I would also quit and then they would always have someone to call if they ever felt like they were going to fall off the wagon. This has worked well for the person.

In March of 1997, I did consume alcohol while traveling in China. It was on the safe list of beverages we were supplied with during the trip. Since my return home, another 10+ years have gone by without a drink.

Don't miss, it only made me act silly and stupid.

I drink,.....and I'm good at it[}:)][:D] Part of being in the business I guess (free bar tabs are a regular thing). I drink too much according to the doctor and the wife,...but hey,..neither of them is giving me anything better to do with my time off work. I hit the happy hour every day,..moreso for the regulars who are like an extended family than for the purpose of drinking,...after all, it's cheaper at home. Funny thing though,....you just can't have as much fun sitting home as you can at happy hour. I have to make sure the customers are pleased with their spirits,..so I consider it a "market survey"[:p]

My Dad used to say " you cant trust a man that wont take a drink" then he quit and left me in a confused state, so I have a cocktail from time to time now.

Yes, 2 or 3 beers a week. I was raised baptist too. For the first 19-20 years of my life I bought the baptist theory that any drinking of alchohol was sin - thinking back, that wasn't really a bad thing. Then I got to know some lutherens well, especially a buddy of mines dad who had 1 beer every evening at home.

It occured to me "This guy is sinning by having 1 beer every evening?" I guess that is when I parted ways with baptist theology on this.

I've been drunk once - learned my lesson. Now I view alcohol about the same as any other food/beverage we indulge in - in moderation, there is nothing wrong with it. Overdone and it is a problem (sin, even). But I equate that to most any other overindulgence, say like too much turkey/dressing/mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving.

I do have a problem with overweight baptist preachers telling me that I'm sinning by drinking the way that I do.

Beer didn't taste good to me until about age 25 and about the same time that coffee started to taste good. The drunk was on whiskey and peppermint schapps - haven't been a fan of those ever again.

And I'm not trying to bash the baptist faith either - it is still pretty much the best for me - just can't follow it blindly.

Yes, obviously this thread got me thinking........
