Crap Day
wife is sick, baby is sick, a/c went out. Guy suppose to be here between 7pm and 7am.

Notified of a missing 5 year old today while on the way to the office.
Search & Rescue, patrol and investigations began the process. Child's tracks were found and subsequently led to an open, large irrigation canal. Divers were called out and the little guy was located, dead, a few hours later.
About 3 ft tall, blond and 35 lbs or so. What a waste of an innocent life. [V]
After helping to bag him and talk to the parents, I have had enough for the day and came home early to hug my son.

Appreciate the thoughts, but this was just the most recent in a long, long line of untimely and violent deaths that I have had to deal with.
When it is an adult, it isn't that big of a deal, although you empathize. When it is a kid, particularly one so small and young......

The very reason I quit my job as a firefighter, after going to dual roles, i.e. EMT.
I was not cut out to see that kind of stuff everyday.
It sent me into a depressive state that took a while to recover from.
Not depression clinically, but I became a very cold person.
Defense mechanism, as you spoke of.
God bless the ones that can do that for decades, and still "feel" anything.0 -
I try to NEVER let my kids out of my site. Sometimes it is hard, and when I lose track of them (VERY infrequently) for even a couple of seconds, I get panicky. Thanks for the post, the infrequent times will go to NO times. 0 -

I have a friend that is a Lt. at the FD and EMT and I try to tell him as often as I can, man I relly appreciate folks like you I have seen him on some rough days over the years

I feel for ya.
I am currently involved with a kid about the same age as yours who slid down the steep muddy side on a stock tank and drowned. Went out to the tank with the boys mom the other day. Very heavy stuff.
Sure makes me a better father...0 -

I know that is a tough call to have to work.
When I was a Paramedic I never could get used to seeing a child die. I did get used to seeing dead adults.
I can imagine what talking to his parents was like, I have done that many times.

Very difficult to see a young life snuffed out! Its always a sad event when a friend or relative who passes on at an advanced age, but to lose a child is not something we are prepared to cope with.
Sorry you had to experience that event but we all thank you for being there to do the job!0 -

I have preached the same at the academy-level for many years, and I have attempted to live it. As far as the daily B.S. and personnel related stress, it is not a problem.
I have yet to find a total shut-off valve for the traumatic deaths, violent deaths, horrible sights of things that occur to people and particularly, for child deaths.
Anyone who has worked the street, sex crimes, homicide and/or a fatal crash/collision squad can attest to this. The job does take a toll over time.
Being able to hug my wife and sons is a good balm though.[^] Bottom line, stuff happens and life goes on. Makes you appreciate what you have.0 -

Nothing can take away entirely what you have seen and done...but allowing us the insight into a caring, grieving man may well help you cope.
I don't think, personally, there can be a worse situation then the loss of a child..and that remains so even if that child is not yours.
As you have aready..give them each an extra hug..and the wife, also.0 -

Me too, it seems just seeing them safe asleep takes the weight of the world off my shoulders, and the kiss on the check maks everything right with the world.0 -
