law enforcement soliciting money.
Got another call today " Hi, this is ......... of the State Police Society ( or what ever) we sure hope we can count on your support again.....".
A few years ago I gave and no peace there after, the phone just kept ringing.
I tried responding "Sorry , last time I helped your organization my phone never stopped ringing, looking for more. I'll have to find another way to help you. Keep up the good work."
I'd get silence or a nasty reply like "thanks for your generosity". I spoke with a law enforcement official about these solicitations and he said the solicitors are not even part of the organization they solicit for and are doing it for a share of the take.
What is your experience with these calls? I find them annoying!

There was a story about this stuff on the radio here the other day. Seems Montgomery County, MD had outsourced their fund raising and the fund raising company was calling people in EVERY Montgomery County in the United States, asking for donations. 0 -
Yup, they call me by my first name like we are old Friends and then it takes a couple of seconds for me to even realize it's a solicitor and not an acquaintance.
A sure fire way to stop me from contributing ever again.0 -

Yeah, they called me once about kids of people in jail. I told them none of my kids were in jail. The guy was pretty dumb because I kept playing dumb and he kept trying to get me to commit to giving money and I kept giving him a hard time for 5 minutes. 0 -
I screen all my calls with my phone recorder.
If I don't recognize the caller, I just don't call back.
I was thinking about putting a message on it that tells the caller to send me an email. I don't leave my email address.
If they know me, they know the address.

Caller ID + Answering machine = peace and quite.
If I don't recognize the caller, I don't answer.
If it's important, whoever it is, can leave a message.
Spammer almost never do, but if they do, one push of the "delete" button, and they are history.
Law enforcement solicitations must be one of those that don't leave a message, I have never had one of those calls.0 -

we use our phoneline 100% dedicated to the computer,since the house was built 3 years ago,since we got roadrunner last month,we actually do have people trying to call us,pops up on the tv screen,sad thing is we don't even own a house phone,cellphones only...i do miss having fun with the telemarketers... 0 -
When I lived in Texas, I got calls to support the Texas State Trooper, which I did and got the little decal to post on my windshield. Found out that the troopers only got one or two percent of the take. Stopped donating to that group forever! A lot, not all, gimmee this, gimme that operations just take your money. Tom
PS' Why don't state troopers have enough insurance to send their kids to college if they get KIA or disabled. That is what I did. T0 -

I used to do this, found that some of these calls are on computer generated rotary and if not answered will just keep calling back. Had certain numbers call back many many times. These calls come in as UNAVAILABLE. Now I just pick it up if I'm available and if I don't recognize the caller, just hang up. Seems to work.0 -
I worked with a scumbag that ran one of those "police boosters" operations.
He laughed at how easy it was to scam people. His gig was to rent an office, telephones and a lot of phone lines. He'd hire a bunch of people to man the phones. He got lists from the police station of previous doners and they also made cold calls. They would keep 99+% of the money. When the heat got to be too much, he'd keep 100% of everything and skip town. The employees would show up and the office would be abandoned (he always started an "INC" to keep his name out of it). He'd skip out on leases and not pay whatever bills were due for phones and other stuff and also did not pay the last couple of payrolls.
This guy was truly scum of the earth and will surely rot in hell. Without a doubt him and his father were too of the lowest people I have ever met.
His father had many similar businesses and used to start and run them on credit cards. He was out of money once and his wife died so he started getting credit cards in her name. He told me that, "She really died at a good time". What a scumbag!
If anyone wants to donate to the police department, they should contact them directly and not give to any phone solicitors!0 -
Best policy is to never donate through a phone solicitation.
It's impossible to know if the caller is actually affiliated with the organization, but even if they are you can bet all of your money won't be going where you want.
If their pitch inspires you to become involved, contact the organization yourself and donate directly.0 -
The organization that I most regret donating to was the State Police "Teddy Bear Drive". Did that about 5 years ago and I have since had so many "police", "retired police", "firefighters" and "retired firefighter" associations call me it is ridiculous. They say, "We appreciate your support last year, and wonder if we can rely on you again." When I tell them I am at my computer with my donation list from the past two years and I did not donate to them last year, they sometimes stutter or they simply say, "Well, how about donating to us and leaving one of those groups off this year." Morons.
My local police department knows if they need anything (especially for kids) they can call me and I will do whatever I can to help them.0 -

These people work for government entities, they get paid more than other government workers in quasi-equal/lateral positions outside those agencies, and have benefits that exceed those of non-government, private sector workers. On top of that, 90+ percent of them think of themselves as belonging to some special paramilitary brotherhood where "private" citizens are viewed as outsiders. They have the absolute nerve to refer to citizens as "civilians". News Flash Boys!! You are civilians, too! Anyone who is not military is civilian! Don't posture about acting like you are special.
Why would you want to help finance the education of these peoples' kids? Did they set up scholarships at your kids' school? How about we all just keep our cash and finance our own kids' education?
ALSO, why the hell would these public agencies ALLOW these virtual criminal soliciting organizations to hustle money from the public using their agency as a reference? Especially when they know they will only receive five cents on the dollar. That is criminal in itself in my opinion.
Wake up, people. When you get these calls, gather the information and personally show up or write a hand-written letter to the agency whose name is being used and tell them to stop doing it. Write to your newspapers and tv stations and expose these rackets.0 -
I usually hang up on them, or tell them i'll give locally. Got a call one time, sounded like a young girl from E. STL, and you could hear several others giggling in the background.. 0 -

Had them call me the day after I got a ticket for 58 in a 55. Felt real good to vent on somebody, wanna guess who it was?
