if I spend most of my play money for the next year or so on paying off this bike that we are [hopefully] getting instead of to the gun collection?

I suppose if we avoided all danger in our lives then guns would be out. Almost everyone that I have know over my lifetime has had a gun accident. None of them have shot themselves or others but they are dangerous to folks who don't like them or ever shoot them.
Motorcycles are more dangerous than cars because you are exposed. That said I do see more accidents with bikes nowdays because the traffic is so heavy. I have been riding since the 1960's and have never had a street accident. If you ride safely and wear proper protection you will survive most non auto related dumps on a bike.
If a drunk driver rearends you at a light or you get T-boned at a crossing your life is sure at risk.
Most of the accidents that I have seen or heard about in our HOG club, 400 members strong, result from tire failures or taking turns too fast.
Go with the bike, but do take a safety course to learn how to drive always watching for the other guy to do something stupid, it will increase your odds to be accident free.
Younger riders with the crotch rockets have a hard time not using that power and it will nail you when you least expect it. Buy a cruiser and avoid these high performance machines the traffic is too heavy today to ride at high speeds safely. In my humble opinion. Lots of accidents in the 18-28 age group![:(]0 -

Few "things" in life are actually investments. Sorry, but guns are a stupid investment if you are trying to make your money grow. There are far better places than guns to grow your money. What you get out of guns is the intangible--same as the motorcycle. Neither is wiser than the other from the 'investment' standpoint. Both are equally stupid if you are trying to prepare for retirement.
Go for the motorcycle. You'll have a blast. There's a lot to be said for what a few hours on two wheels does for the mind/body/spirit.0 -
guns are better investments, fewer medical bills, insurance, etc!
You should own an AR before a bike!0
