Janie PorterTampa, Florida - If the red flags were going to go up, this was the time.
Thursday night, Tampa Police were conducting a random sex offender check and knocked on 52-year-old Raymond Gomez's door.
When he answered, he was naked.
"He kind of stood behind [the door], and his eyes were as big as saucers," Ofr. Felicia Pecora recalled.
"I just thought, he looked like people look when they just get out. when they're naked and you catch them. So, I said, `Are you naked?' And he said, `Yes.' And I said, `Well, put your pants on because we're going to do a check on you.'"
Gomez did and then let the two officers inside. But as he was talking to them, another red flag went up. Ofr. Pecora noticed he was pacing deliberately in front of the bedroom door.
"That's when I kinda stepped in the bedroom. And as I walked past the door, I saw a young girl in the bed like this," Ofr. Pecora said as she made a motion showing a stiff body, "with her hand kinda hidden, and I said, `Who are you?'"
The girl first told officers she was 18, but she is 15. She said she'd met Gomez about seven months ago through a Christian chat room online. But neither of them were using their computers to access the internet. They were using cell phones.
"A lot of times parents don't realize kids can get access to the internet through their cell phone. What she said was a 50-cent chat session, and that's how they met," Ofr. Pecora said.
Since then, the two had talked on the phone about God and religion. Eventually, Gomez visited the girl at her house in Bartow when her parents weren't home.
Since then, police say the two had had sex about 20 times at various locations, including Gomez's home Thursday night.
The girl told officers, earlier in the day, Gomez had driven to her house in Bartow to pick her up.
Gomez was arrested Thursday night for violating the conditions of his parole, which include staying at least 1,000 feet from a child, not using the internet and keeping a driving log.
Gomez has been a registered sex offender since 2002, when he was charged with having sex with a child under the age of 16 in Hillsborough county.
Detectives think there is at least one more victim. If you have any information, contact Tampa Police.

For the record, I'm a born-again, Bible thumpin, Jesus-lovin, right-wing, fundamentalist Christian. That said, I was not offended by the original post.
It is well known that nutcases look for any place to find a sweet, innocent young things who may be easily influenced, and one place to find them is on Christian sites on the internet (or Bible class, Sunday School, wherever Christians gather either in person or virtually). The fact that the wierdos are successful preying (no pun intended) on Christian gatherings indicates a failure of the church to train young Christians properly.
I also view many of the negative opinions I have seen on this forum and in other places about the church and Christians as a failure of the church to properly train, disciple and discipline it's membership, which has tarnished the image of true Christians and the church. Again, going to church does not a Christian make. Any wierdo can claim to be a Christian, giving other people a warped sense of what a Christian really is. I think if we all knew some true Christians we would all think differently. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be nearly as many true Christians as people who try to wear that label for one reason or another.
Huge problem, we can debate for weeks on end and not even agree on what the problem is, much less solve anything. I just don't think the answer is for any of us on either side to get offended or argue over it. They will know we are Christians by our love, not our convincing arguments, our attitudes, our offensive comments, etc, etc, etc.
{steps off soapbox, continues loving neighbor and serving others as we were called to do}
I also am a born again Christian, and I agree, offensive comments are not Christ-like. There are also alot of people who talk the talk but don't walk the walk. None of us are perfect though. Jesus loved everybody, but he also lined people out when they needed it, such as the pharisees, or money changers in the temple.0 -

Come home for lunch and what do I find on a post?...the usual backstabbing, name calling ,jumping to conclusions bit, and totally getting away from the actual post...
I felt sure when I posted the article certain points would be discussed...The access to a chat site via the phone and not a computer, seeing the guy 7 months, 7 long months and no one knew, it was obvious the girl was a willing participant (sp??) or what was used to "scare" her into meeting him over and over again?..that is what I thought would be discussed....not whether or not I hate christians and if you are one...

Ram...and yours is accurate and appreciated?...you seem to have the powers of judging from afar considering you have judged me...which by the way you are wrong on...Not liking a persons actions does not mean you dislike the person....0 -

A joke. I find it hilarious that the majority of Christians proclaim "innocence" and "virtue" all the live long day. While, in fact, this type of activity seems common from that group. Anyone remember Sen. Foley or the Meth Minister? At least porn stars are up front about their activities.
I find it interesting that gun nuts proclaim that all they want to do is protect their second amendment rights while in fact guns are used to kill people at places like Virginia tech or Columbine. Gun people are not as safe as they seem.0 -
The moral to this story....Parents need to be more involved in their children's lives. The internet is not a baby sitter. If you have a computer in your home that your children use, it is up to the parents to safeguard their children's time on the computer.
If a parent is unwilling or unable to do this, they can count on problems as there are plenty of scumbags out there to use and abuse their children...0 -

I know nothing about using the phone to access a chat room. how does that work? I am familiar with internet chat rooms (used to be a member at a guitar site, visited their live chat once or twice, but really have no use for them), but I don't know how something could go on over the phone without somebody catching on to something. Can somebody please explain a telephone chat room?
And then there is the 7 month issue. How long should it take a parent to realize SOMETHING is up with their daughter? I'm probably more strict than most with my kids' phone useage, etc, but I still don't get that.0 -

Often times Christians, especially young Christians can be more easily decieved because of how they see people and the world in general. Good heads up BR, thanks for posting the warning. [:)] 0 -
rhythm_guy...
The internet is accessed by a cell phone...I dont think (at least not yet) a regular phone is capable of it, but cell phones sure are...the i-phone that just caused the big hype is internet ready...
My phone is ready for it...its also capable of taking short movies, still photos etc...Almost any cell phone can be used to access the internet...all you do is hit a button...
Thats why I said, you dont need a computer to go online anymore...a phone works just as well...download porn, send it, nude photos etc....and you use the phone just as you would the computer...0 -
Earl (and everyone else) - you are right. You are not God.
The only true path is by doing exactly what I tell you.

The topic is written in all CAPS, and the word "CHRISTIAN" is a headliner in its title. That alone, and who posted it warns me that it was going to be anti Christian. My gut feeling didn't fail me.
I came to realize a long time ago that there were many here on this forum who takes great pride in highlighting when a Christian fails and falls short of the Glory of God. It is why I "don't go there" anymore on this forum. In fact this is the reason I now frequent the "Christian Out Doorsman" web sight when I do want to share the word. Other than my signature I don't want to offend those here who hate to hear the word. To each his own, but they can not stop my prayers, even if they do try and limit prayer request to just one posting. To me it is an attempt to try and minimize the impact a particular prayer request may have.

Why not give BR the benefit of the dought if there is any. She posted a warning for the Christians here who may have children on these websites. Seems like a kind gesture to me. Thanks again Beth. 0 -
BR,
"what do I find on a post?...the usual backstabbing, name calling ,jumping to conclusions bit, and totally getting away from the actual post..."
Look in the mirror Beth.
Maybe it is a Freudian slip on your part, but if you read my post again you will notice I never mentioned the word "HATE". That is your word, not mine. I said the word "ANTI", and this article in my mind is ANTI Christian. I am anti towards a lot of things (such as liberalism), but that doesn't mean I "HATE" them.
There have been many attempts by others on this board to slam Christianity at every chance they get. All I am saying is that your attempts to do this have not gone unnoticed. To each his own. If that is what you feel a need to do then so be it. Just don't get so worked up to the point of cursing at someone when called out on it.

We dont "hate" to hear the word, most of us have lived it, been listening to it since the day of our births, walked it, talked it, etc and probably know it better than a lot of "christians"....0 -
No Beth I didn't mention it. You must have assumed it.
Look I'm not out to pick a fight with you, and I will not discuss things of biblical proportions here ever again, but while not meaning to judge I will call a spade a spade.
You and Classic have taken many pot shots at Christians in the past. It has not gone unnoticed.
This zinger is typical:

WHat I said is not a zinger as you call it...its the truth...0 -
Then I guess we must agree to disagree.
Hating to "hear the word", and hating someone and their beliefs are two different things.
I may hate to hear liberal left wing innuendo, but I don't hate the person or group saying it.
Again, I don't mean to judge you, or sound like I am doing so. Just calling it as I see it, because you see things as you see them, and I see them as I do. Sometimes precipitation can be a double edge sword.
