a good comeback is "why do people need sports cars or SUVs"

technically I could drive a TOYota Prius, but I am much happier with my Bonneville and would much rather have a 'vette or Mustang GT.
It is quite simple, I WANT to own an "assault rifle" and I am not a criminal, so there is no reason for me not to.

"Need is relative to the situation one is confronted with." Why do you need a house, car, phone, shoes, fork, toilet paper or anything? Need is as impossible to define as a negative is to prove.

Same reason some folks need golf clubs. Just another source of frustration.

eh, I haven't seen too many shooters try to break a rifle over their knee after missing a shot. Just goes to show, marksmanship is a much more relaxing sport than golf [;)][8D]

the retort to that is "you can't kill 30 people with an suv like you can with a fully-loaded assault rifle. . . "

Try : "S'cuse me while I whip this out...You were saying..?"

Alright, maybe that wouldn't be so good to use at work.

Next time someone asks why you need an evil black gun, stop immediately - grab a hold of their arm and say in serious hushed tones - "Now more than ever it's imperative we all be ready. The next attack could come at anytime."

And they'll say, "You're that concerned with terrorists?"

(now grab them and pull them closer)...

    "Democrats."

    Try this:

quote:To stop the "assault," when your "assault speech," turns into a criminal act or governmental oppression.

"To protect those who lack the courage to protect themselves from an opressive government."

    I dunno.

    Try this:

    "What's an assault rifle?"

It should end the conversation pretty quickly. Even the "experts" in Congress can't answer with anything but, "I don't know, but I know one when I see one."

It's not intended to be funny, but my standard reply is "I don't believe the men who wrote the 2nd Amendment after standing together at Lexington, Concord, and the hills of Boston were worried about the start of rabbit season.

You could start with something like:

Criminals, don't abide the law ... Right? So it makes since that Gun control only effects law abiding people ... right?

Criminals are always going to find a weapon, wheather it's a gun, knife or baseball bat.

If we really wanted to stop unnecessary deaths, why don't we start a little closer to home ... and where we can make a real difference?

For instance, two out of five deaths among U.S. teens are the result of a motor vehicle crash, the motor vehicle death rate for male occupants age 16 to 19 was nearly twice that of their female counterparts (23 per 100,000 compared with 12 per 100,000) (CDC 2004a).

Bonehead: We should have more gun laws.

You: The right to bear arms "shall not be infringed", so they can't tell you what kind of gun you can or can't have. we have a right to free speech, they don't say "except you can't say this... or you can't say that..." as long as you don't use it to harm anyone you have complete freedom to say anything you want. and, own any gun you want.

Bonehead: reasonable gun owners shouldn't want to own an assault rifle.

You: 'reasonable' is only an opinion. everybody's got their own opinions.

Bonehead: Why do people need assault rifles?
(what he really means to say is, he doesn't like them.)

    You: Dunno. I like them.

    Bonehead: (blah blah blah)

You: (shrugs shoulders, goes about business)

Mission Impossible. The only valid arguement is that you need one to protect yourself from the Government, and 99% of the people won't buy into that, rather they'll think you're whacked out. If someone comes up with an answer for Nemesis they need to head the NRA.

Ask them if they are really that naive to think a ban is really going to stop gun crimes. Bans only effect the law abiding citizen anyway and we're not the ones comitting the crimes. So why do they want people like you and me to be punished by a gun ban?

Wasn't the Salt lake shooting a pump shotgun away? Crazy people/criminals are always going to find a way to kill you, so lets go after them and not our guns.

I have come to the conclusion that the anti-gunners really think that they can make a difference and the thier sad misguided propganda will somehow make the world a better place! They are don't wish to see any rational arguement and when they are given the truth they simply become enraged and self rightous as to how "WE THE PEOPLE" should live or lives. I work with such people and hear them everytime there is an violent crime where a firarm was used. They really think if there were no firearms there would be no crime! I continue to meet thier jibs with rational reason and it just makes these people walk away with disgust. I think that people who do not have an education of our Constitution are totally missing the fundamental liberties that we are afforded. In speaking with these people, I now understand how hard it was to convince those in the past that the world was round instead of being flat as was the general theory of the time.

I just met one of my new neighbors and I ran into the same thing. Somehow I got into a discussion about target shooting and he jumped in and said, "I have no need for guns, had all the gun experience that I needed, in the military" I suppose Viet Nam, the guy is retirement age. I just dropped the gun chat because you could see it would have lead to a big arguement and I didn't want that at a cocktail party.

I remember back in the 1970's when I lived in Hollywood, FLorida. There was a time when people disliked motorcycles so much that they almost passed a law outlawing there use on the freeways and the Florida turnpike. Just goes to show how peoples opinions, and laws change with the political winds of the time.

It is hard to argue with my sig.
It is hard to say TJ was not a man devoted to individual rights.

Then add the quote from Chairman Mao in his biography "True power comes from the barrel of a gun"

Then ask that person; do you want to turn over complete power to the government or do you think we the people should guard our rights by maintaining the ability to say "NO" to the government and remind them they work for us.

An armed man is a citizen and unarmed man is a subject.

Socrates warned the ancient Greeks "Any government that fears an armed populace should be feared by that populace" (He may have used citizen)

    I agree with gunslinger.

When I'm in that situation, I try to steer the discussion toward history. Why did the people of the colonies feel the need to commit treason against, and break the laws of, the legal government??

Of the major changes in human history, which ones occurred without the use of force??

How difficult would it be to be enslaved (by anyone) if we , the people, were disarmed.

I think it would be just as easy to do it with an SUV. Given their size and speed, you could run down 30 people in no time.

you: I went target shooting the other day...

neighbor: I don't need no stinkin' guns!

    see what I mean?

...there is not a useful, good retort to some anti-gun jerk, period.
THEY do NOT let the facts get in the way of their warped, disstorted anti-gun mindset. EVERY fact/study pertainning to gun laws prove the laws fail, do not work.
Talking to 99% of anti-gunners is like trying to talk to someone that's drunk, your just banging your head against a wall...[V]

I start with, "Explain to me again how I will be safer unarmed than armed..."

We have become far, far to willing to trade our constitutional freedoms for convenience. Those who trade freedom for security will end with neither.

I gotta agree with you on that one....and if you say something intelligent that proves your point, they fall back on my favorite response: "But they're scaaaaaary!" No jack, so are clowns, but one has yet to hurt me.
