Media all over 2 black coaches
Why the hell is it such a big deal that 2 good coachs for the Colts and Bears are African/American? I know there hasnt been one make it to the superbowl, but there will be 2 this time. I think the media is blowing this out of proportion. They way i look at it is: They are very good coaches that have good teams that have made it to the big game. Regardless if they are black, white, blue, red, etc... Even though it is history with the event, it shouldnt be blowed out of proportion. They are good "coaches" leading their teams to the BIG DANCE.

I enjoy watching football, but I'm usually a little nonplussed by the fervor with which they keep track of stats. For example, it wouldn't surprise me (anymore) to hear a commentator say this:
"This is the first time in 23 games that [name a team] has come back to win after being ahead at the end of the first quarter but behind at the ends of the 2nd and 3rd quarters." (And that's remarkable because.....?)
So OF COURSE they're going to make a big deal out of the fact that this is the first time a black head coach has brought a team to the SB....and not just one, but TWO.
In short, I agree that they're blowing it out of proportion, but they blow EVERYTHING out of proportion. Why should this be any different?0 -

What the media - in their infinite lack of integrity - fails to realize is that what they try to make a big deal of actually becomes a "slur" of sorts against African-Americans. As if they're saying "Geez, it's about time!"
Regardless of the coach's color or ethnicity, it's the 45 players on the team who actually play and win or lose the game. But, the media is first and foremost a cacaphony of disingenuine self-serving idiots and so this becomes the official big news surrounding the Super Bowl.
The next two weeks will surely make most sane people gag. I think that beer commercials are so popular throughout the Super Bowl because the steady ingestion of alcohol helps a viewer to effectively tune out the nonsensical blather of those in the media, including the announcers.0 -
When the bantering idiot asks Lovie Smith what he thinks about being the first black head coach to go to the Superbowl, I hear:
"So Coach Smith, tell us how proud you must be to finally put to bed the myth the black coaches are too dumb and stupid to be a successful head coach in the NFL."
As absurd as this sounds, this is basically what their asking.

I'm not really a sports fan in any respect. I find it easy to follow football. I can follow baseball if I need to do so (and when I need to do so I do find it interesting). I have a really hard time following basketball. I enjoy most of the European sports and wish I understood them better (Rugby and Soccer in particular, but Cricket also seems like a good game.)
Bottom line: I like to watch the competition, and in some sports, the competition is more interesting than in others. But in the end, all that really gets me excited is the display of athletic prowess that we can see in these games.
Edit: Also, I rarely care who wins the game. I just want to see a good game. Generally, I will root first for a team that is from somewhere I have lived, and then for the team that is losing, just because come-backs are exciting.0 -
I like to root for the underdog on games in which I don't care about the turnout. The division of baseball that the Cubs are in has always been underrated. I usually root for the teams in the division when the Cubs are way out of first place and would need a miracle to turn it around, as in last year.[:)] 0 -
Can someone give an example of this media "all over" the 2 black coaches? All I saw the media "all over" was the fact that those 2 have been long time friends and now they're meeting in the Super Bowl.

The media wants to make a HUGE issue about race when in fact if the media would quit stirring up stuff all the time, it wouldn't be nearly as big of an issue. After working with a couple different papers for about a year I realize that they want to dig up something "newsworthy". If they don't have a big twist in the story, they don't sell the papers. It's not that big of a deal, at least not to me. It shouldn't be a big deal, but it is so I guess the media gets their story. 0 -
