Got robbed today!
I needed a new monitor and decided to pick one up at my local Fry's Electronics. It was a flat panel, 20" LCD on sale and a $30 rebate.
I bought the monitor, paid for it at the counter, and walked out to my truck. I put it in the bed of the truck, unlocked the door and climbed in.
As I was starting the engine, I felt the truck shake. I looked to see a young black kid (maybe 18 or so) running towards a car with my monitor in his arms.
I jumped out as quickly as I could, but they had already floored it and all I could get was the first three numbers of the plate.
I didn't have my cell phone with me, and feeling like an idiot, I went back in the store to have them call the police.
When I told the guy at the door what happened, he called a manager. I asked him to call the police, and he started asking me a bunch of questions. Still a little angry and upset, I asked him again to just call the police for me. His reply was, "Let me call security".
I'm a little past PO'ed, so I told him rather sternly, "I want you to call the police." He said, "Sir, I'm going to take care of it", and asked me for my receipt.
I showed it to him, and he handed it to one of the rep's there, and told him to get another monitor. While he was doing that, the security guy got there and started asking me questions.
I answered all of them as best I could, and the other guy came back with another monitor. The manager gave it to me and told me the security guy would escort me to my car. He did, and this time I put it in the cab of the truck.
I am happy they gave me another monitor, but I don't understand why they didn't call the police. I figured as soon as I walked out the door, it was mine and they were free and clear. Great customer service, but I don't understand why they didn't call the police even if they were going to stand good for it.
Oh well, no gripes here, and I hope the kid drops and breaks the other one when he's going into the pawn shop to hock it.

How? It was an older car, and the security guy said it wasn't the first time it had happened there. I didn't see anything that would suggest an inside job.0 -
It was better for FRY's PR to give you another monitor rather than have the police in front of their store for an hour scaring away customers. With a police report it would also hit the paper and then no one would go to FRY's. "Because it is such a dangerous place"
Make sense?0 -
I would guess that the cops would want to see the video from the store's security cameras, which they don't want to take the time to mess with; and maybe they don't like the idea of having a cop car or two parked in front of the store, it looks bad. so it's worth it for them to just give you another monitor and send you on your way. 0 -
or maybe they are going to later, prosecute him on their own. 0 -

Bingo...that's why the mall ninjas are there. Handle situations internally so as not to result in bad press that may drive business away from the merchants.0 -
Danny...
Why didnt you put it inside the truck?....Things like that have happened so often in Florida, they tell ppl to put everything in the cab of the truck or lock it in a box if you must have it in the back...
The cops also tell you if its a station wagon, van, suv etc, cover the pkgs....this is just for christmas time anymore....its anytime...0 -

Because I was clueless. I usually load grocery or large items in the back of the truck and drive home. Since this happened, I doubt I will be doing it again. I guess the same thing could have happened if I had been stopped a red light too. I was just clueless of this stuff!0 -
Thats what i figured its not the first time. 0 -

Don't feel bad. I do that all the time, especially with a large item like that. I would not give it a second thought. But then I live in rural LA. At least you got your monitor and some of us learned a lesson.0 -
No matter- thats still pretty brazen unless they were watching the entire time. 0 -

...glad to hear the store took care of you! 0 -
Sure was nice of the store to give you another monitor. If you had my luck, you'd be SOL. I'm thinking the kid might of been watching you the whole time, waiting for the right moment. 0 -
All the box stores have fantastic security. They can read the plate on any car and watch every angle in the store with their cameras today. They can record on their hard disks for up to two year.
But get this, they won't call the police or prosecute anyone. The legal fees are too high and if they lose the case which they often do they get major sued. The will not even attempt to stop anyone on the property or prevent them from stealing in the stores.
All the minorities just threaten to sue and they run like rabbits.
The stores have taken the position that its easier to replace the merchandise than it is to pay the lawyers and defend the lawsuits for unlawfull detention of a customer.
Lawyers have made it impossible to protect your property anymore if you are in business. The criminals have more rights than the business.
Problem is as soon as all the criminals learn this they will be looting the stores in droves, and returning stolen merchandise for credit daily. We will pay for this routine through higher pricing.0 -
If only Gecko45 was there, he would have got the perp with a cunningly placed claymore. 0 -
Mrs Plaid use to work for Bath & Body in the mall. Their policy was do not prosecute shoplifting. 0 -
I agree it was good customer service, but it seems like avoiding prosecution of the thieves just encourages the deadbeats to be thieves. 0 -

SIG, reading what you wrote makes me struggle to reach down deep to keep from unleashing the most scathing diatribe in the history of mankind aimed squarely at your empty head. Lawyers make it impossible? Maybe where you vote. West coast? What a supreme load of stinky, steamy drivel!
In court this morning a girl was convicted of shoplifting from Walmart. I see thieves going down ALL THE TIME for such crimes. Do you just make this crap up? If you painted with a broader brush you could change your name to SHERWIN WILLIAMS.

Do you vote? Do you sit on juries? Do you believe in the 7th? Do you often throw blame without thought or fact basis? Do you even remember what is in the Constitution other than the second amendment? You have only sound byte TV knowledge of how the judicial system works. I don't come down to the peep shows and comment on your failure to properly mop the floors, I suggest you avoid speaking about things you have no idea about.
Take personal responsibility! Minorities? Look in a mirror and start your blame train there. Blame, blame, blame. Blame lawyers, blame minorities! All blame, no thought, no personal responsibility.
Lawyers are convenient targets for addled brains because they are on the front lines fighting the fights you don't have the balls to fight. Use your brain to think something through beside where you will get your next glass of wine.
Oh well, so much for restraint...

Oh, and sorry to hear of your problems at Frye's, Danny. Glad you were not attacked.

Hey, look at it this way (and I know it's cold comfort), but that kid will likely remain a useless POS all his life and end his days as some prisonyard b!#ch punking out on a nightly basis.
I'm glad no violence was involved, but it sucks that anything like that happened in the first place.0 -

You, my not so close friend are part of the problem. YOU BLAME THE VICTIM......You should darn well be able to put a recently purchased product in your truck bed and expect to drive home and still find it there.
Apologist like yourself make me PUKE. If a 45 bullet went through the brain pan of the thief only the coroner would be involved. NOT THE NEXT VICTIM IN THE SAME PLACE TOMORROW MORNING.0 -
There's nothing preventing you from calling the police and reporting this. The monitor became yours when you paid for it and it was later taken from you without consent. You were the victim.
The fact that the merchant chose to give you another of the same type item has no bearing on whether your property was stolen or not.0 -
I guess it's true what Mr. Cooper says about even most gun owners are in Condition White most of the time.
I wonder why the big box stores don't always prosecute shoplifting? Seems to me that if an act of thievery goes unpunished; more thieves will result.
I don't get the inference about cops outside scaring away customers; if one of my customers got scared by one of APD's Olympic Donut Munching Squad, I would start looking at him differently.
Wonder where Gecko45's partner with the Sig Psp was 'working'?0 -
