Elk hunt PICS!! (warning dead stuff)
This hunt was fast and furious. I can't believe its over but it was a GREAT hunt! I didn't see a single elk on day 1 but on day 2 I moved to a lower elevation and was into elk all day before finally closing the deal late in the evening with a great bull. Thank you to all the guys over in the black powder forum for playing 20 questions with me (this was my 1st black powder hunt), especially Odawgp who answered any question I threw out no matter how silly. Here are the pics.

Camp.

Great elk country here. A huge 7x7 just gave me the slip before I took this picture.

I passed on this nice 5x6 on the morning of day 2.

Bear poo! LOTS of bear in this area.

Encore worked very well!

The happy hunter.
This bull brought a herd of 5 cows into a watering hole late on day 2. The cows arrived first followed by the bull about 20 second later. The cows were only about 10 yards away when they figured out something was wrong due to the swirling winds. They were starting to leave when the bull moved quickly to the edge of the pond. He froze just long enough for me to put a shot on him at less than 40 yards.
I'm not ready to come back to civilization yet so I'm headed back to camp in the morning for a few more days.
Warmest Regards,
elkoholic

My father and a hunting buddy were also in camp but I was the only hunter. This hunt took place in a "high quality" public land area which took me 11 years to draw.0 -

338 gr Platinum Power Belt over 100 gr of 777. The Power Belt functioned flawlessly. Lots of good and bad press on these but I did not put the best shot on this bull and he still only went 50 yards. The shot was quartering in (as apposed to away)and I tied to shoot inside the left shoulder into the chest but I ended up hitting low on the left shoulder. The bullet had enough on it to still pass deep into the chest cavity.0 -
i would like to place my order now for a pound of burger and maybe a steak or two [:D][:D] good job 0 -
You are a lucky man.Great story and pictures.I`ve never drawn a permit and forgot to apply this year. 0 -
Sweet! I am very envious of you.
Glad to see the Platinum Powerbelt did the job.0 -
Nice bull, how's about a pic of his teeth ?
Got any good color on them?
Also from the bear scat looks like a good crop of chokecherries in the area? our bears wish they had berries of any kind this year.
Now get back to camp and brush for the other guys so they can tag out!0 -

I am just guessing but I think the other guys were along for the ride.
He said it took 11 years to draw his tag for this prime area.0 -

I was a little surprised but his teeth were very clean. Chokecherries are about the only thing that didn't freeze in this area. I'm going back to camp and sleep for a few days, I was the only one with a tag.0 -
Great job, man! I am still working towards my elk hunt out west. I will take whatever I can, rifle, bow or muzzleloader. It will probably be a once in a lifetime thing for me. 0 -

If you have a pic of you, the bull, and the rifle, I'd forward that to Hodgdon and see if they'll put it on their website. They like to hear about folks that have good luck with their products.0 -
