Both are good strong well built revolvers. I collect the old model Rugers. I also have several that I shoot and shoot several Smiths. I prefer carryin the Smith 57 only because it is quicker to load or unload than a SA Ruger. I've found the Ruger old models in .357 or 41mag to be slightly more accurate than a Smith in the same caliber. Neither manufacturer is any better than the other. Its all a matter of what each individual prefers and wants in a handgun.

I like my Redhawk in .45LC for a hunting sidearm and also like my model 60 .357 Smith for carry - both are stainless and both are well made.

S&W have smoother actions. Never understood all the hoopla about Smiths being fragile. Owed several over the years and shot the heck of them without every having any wear issues.

Smiths's timing notches, placed directly on top of the cylinder bore are their Achille's Foot. But only if you're in the habit of shooting old, weakened scrounged brass at Plus-P velocities. Colt (and Ruger, I think, I'll have to look) offset the timing notches to give them a little more metal. I love Ruger single and double action revolvers, but nothing I've ever shot by Ruger comes clost to even the new Smith & Wesson triggers.

I prefer my GP-100 to my M19-4. I'm seriously considering trading the Smith off for a SP-101.

    But, that's just me.

I agree, its always better to buy both and that way you can spend some time comparing the pros and cons!

You'll have plenty of time to ponder this and read up on all info over the next 5 years...when you can purchase and legally carry a handgun by yourself in PA

Put 5 rds in the x ring of an NRA rapid fire, 25 yard center target today at 25 yards, rested.

Smith .357 something revolver with those laser grip thingys.

I did the trigger work on this gun for a buddy, single and double action. The shots were made single action on a sand bag.

    Did it myself today.

I have always owned Smith & Wesson revolvers now I have never owned a Ruger revolver but I have been impressed enough that I dont feel the need to pointlessly search for a better revolver.Rugers look like they are built tough and would make a good club when you run out of ammo but Smith & Wesson I dont think can be beat in the revolver game.

Colt is prettier than either, Smith has the best trigger and better double action, Ruger has the better single action and will still work after Armageddon.
